DAVID SUTHE tLAND, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CAR-DOOFL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,218, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed June 29, 1885.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID SUTHERLAND, i
of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, form ing part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved doors. Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal section taken on line 2 2. Fig. 3 is a detail hori zontal section taken on line 3 3, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section taken on line 4 l, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a modification.
My invention relates to doors intended more particularly for refrigeratin gears; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully explained, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the door-jamb, or part of a refrigeratingcar, and I3 the doors hinged thereto at 0. Above the doors is secured a strip, 1), being separated by means of brackets D, depending from the door-jainb, and screw-bolts I, projecting outward from the strip and passing through the tal section, in which the packing-strip IV is drawn in by means of a screw, I, which passes lower ends of the brackets, outside of which they are provided with nuts J. The strip is wedge shape in transverse section, as shown in Fig. 4, being wider at its inner than at its to fit a key or wrench, and may, if preferred,
outer part. 011 both its lower and upper face is secured a packing, L, the upper one forming a tight joint between the strip and the door-jamb, and the lower one forming a tight the latter are closed. In case these joints become loose by wear, a strip is moved slightly outward by tightening on the nuts J, and thus perfectly tight joints are bad at all times at the tops of the doors, and a per- 1 substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
fectly-tight joint is made between the doors by means of a similar strip, N, connected to one of the doors by means of spring or other arms 0 and bolts T. This strip N is also wedge shape in transverse section, and either i it or the adjacent edges of the doors are pro vided with packings T. (See Fig. 3.) The inner bolts, T, pass through slots in the ends of the spring-arms to allow for horizontal movement of the strip to permit it to be forced inward more or less to insure a tightjoint be- (N'o model.)
tween the doors. It is forced inward by hand nuts U on the outer end of screw-threaded rods V, that project from the doors, to which the arms are secured through slots IV in the arms.
In Fig. 2 the strip is shown forced in bythe handnuts, forming a tight joint between the doors, and in Fi 3 it is shown held out by means of the springarms, the nuts being turned outward to permit the arms to assume this position.
The doors may be held closed by any desirable means. I have shown vertical sliding bars or catches X, that engage their outer ends with brackets or staples Y, secured to the doorjamb and connected at their inner ends to a central link, Z, pivoted to one of the doors and provided with a lever, Z, by which they are operated, and which has a slot, Z to engage a lug, Z, and one of the arms to hold the catches in their outer position into engagement with the said brackets. To disengage the catches from the brackets the parts are moved into position shown by dotted lines.
In Fig.5 is shown a modification in horizonthrough the strip and screws in a bracket or lug, D, that is secured to the inner side of the door B. The head I- of this belt is made 2. In combination with the doors, the wed geshape adjustable strip provided with packingstrips and located above the doors, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the doors, the wedgeshape strip provided with the packing, and the brackets and screw-threaded rods for adj usting the strip to compensate for wear, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In combination with the doors, the verticalstrip located between the doors and made adjustable, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. r
5. In combination with the doors, the vertieoinpensate for Wear, substantially as and for the pur ose set forth.
7. In combination with the doors, the wed geshape strip, the slotted spring-arms connectcal wedge shape adjustable strip located bein g the strip to one of the doors, and threaded tween t1 e doors, and the paokings between bolts or rods provided with handles for tight- 111e strip and the doors, substantially as and ening the strip, substantially as and for the for the purpose set forth. purpose setforth.
6. In eombinationwith thedoors, the wedge DAVID SUTHERLAND. shape strip located between the doors, the spring-arin'connecting the strip to one of the doors, and the nuts for tightening the strip to F Witnesses:
