Description

y 1966 A. DE MARIO 3,248,754
PUTTY KNIFE Filed July 6, 1965 INVENTOR Arthur DeMario United States Patent 3,248,754 PUTTY KNIFE Arthur De Mario, 1192 Crittenden Road, Rochester, N.Y. Filed July 6, 1965, Ser. No. 469,635 Claims. (Cl. 183.5)
The present invention generally relates to a putty knife and more particularly to such a knife having means associated therewith for delivering putty or similar material to the end of the blade for application at a desired point.
An object of the present invention is to provide a putty knife having a putty applying blade and a spring blade pivoted thereto for receiving a punctura-ble flexible putty container therebetween for squeezing the putty out of the container to a point of application.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a putty knife having a slit forming structure formed in the putty knife blade for puncturing the bag or container of putty.
A further object of this invention is to provide a putty knife having a funnel-like opening in the blade for directing toward the point of application.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a putty knife for automatically dispensing putty at the point of application which is simple in construction, easy to use, efficient in operation, long lasting and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the putty knife of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the putty bag; and
FIGURE 3 is a side elevational view of the putty bag and knife with portions broken away illustrating the structural details thereof.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, the putty knife of this invention is designated by numeral and includes a putty applying blade 12 provided with a conventional wood handle secured thereto in a conventional manner such as by rivets or the like.
A spring blade 14 is pivotally connected to the handle and the blade 12 by a rivet 16 thus enabling the blade 14 to swing laterally from an operative position overlying the blade 12 to a position extending laterally from the blade 12 as shown in FIGURE 1.
The blade 12 has an upwardly struck triangular tongue 18 which serves as a bag slitter. Also, blade 12 has an inverted U-shaped projection 20 struck upwardly therefrom to form a funnel-shaped guide for putty discharged from a flexible plastic putty bag 22. The spring blade 14 has a notch 24 formed in the outer end edge thereof as shown in FIGURE 1.
In use, the spring blade 14 is pivoted out of the way as shown in FIGURE 1. The putty bag 22 is then placed on the putty blade 12 and pushed forwardly thus causing the bag slitter 18 to penetrate the front end of the bag 22. This will also bring the front end' of the bag against the 3,248,754 Patented May 3, 1966 funnel opening defined by projection 20. The spring blade 14 is then flexed upwardly by engaging the finger in notch 24 and at the same time blade 14 is pivoted over the putty bag and released. This enables the spring 'blade 14 to exert a downward pressure on the putty bag 22 as shown in FIGURE 3.
In using the putty knife, the natural flexing of the two blades on the putty bag 22 causes putty to flow automatically and at the same time forces the front end of the bag against the funnel thus preventing leaks at this point. If a faster flow of material is required, thumb pressure on the spring blade 14 is all that is required.
When using the present invention, putty or similar material can be easily applied and never comes into direct contact with the hands. Materials such as putty, caulking compound, glazing compound, plastic wood, plaster patching compound and the like may be employed in combination with the present putty blade.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A putty knife assembly comprising an elongated putty blade, a handle connected to one end of said blade, a spring blade mounted in overlying relation to said putty blade, adapted to receive a bag of putty disposed between said blades, said putty blade including a bag slitter remote from said handle, and a funnel shaped guide member for discharging putty squeezed from the bag by the spring blade.
2. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein said spring blade is pivotally attached to said handle for lateral swinging movement from a position overlying the putty blade to position extending laterally thereof.
3. The structure as defined in claim 2 wherein said bag slitter is in the form of an upwardly struck triangular tongue for opening the putty bag when forced over the tongue.
4. The structure as defined in claim 3 wherein said guide is in the form of an upwardly stnick inverted U- shaped channel spaced longitudinally from said tongue and engaging the end of the bag around the opening formed by the bag slitter.
5. The structure as defined in claim 4 wherein said spring blade is normally disposed adjacent the putty blade to exert pressure on the putty bag.
