DISPENSING DEVICE FOR TAPE Filed Sept. 28 1949 I5 INVENTOR BURTON D. MORGAN Patented June 17, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE v 2,600,904 DISPENSING DEVICE FOR TAPE Burton D. Morgan, Loudonville, N. Y. Application September 28, 1949, Serial No. 118,440
2 Claims. (01. 164-845) v My invention relates to dispensing devices for tape and it is particularly designed for dispensing adhesive tape, though not limited to such use. Various difficulties are found in dispensing tape in desired lengths of adhesive tape from a container holding a supply of the same, usually in the form of a roll. Thus it sticks to the fingers and to other objects with which it may accidentally come into contact; it is commonly so resistant to tearing that one must either find a pair of scissors or a knife to cut off the desired length; and other difficulties will come to mind. It is a main object of my invention to provide means for ready severance of a desired length of tape, whether it has a strong backing, such as cloth or a weak backing, such as paper.
Another object is to provide means for holding the free end of the tape securely in place so as to be readily grasped by the user, and in such manner that it will not be liable to come loose and attach itself to the supply roll or other object.
Still another object is to provide means for covering the free end of tape and protecting it against dirt.
Referring now to the annexed drawings, which are made a part of this application and in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts:
Fig. 1 is a perspective of a tape container in open position, said container embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, a top plan of the container,
Fig. 3, a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4, an end elevation,
Fig. 5 a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6, a detail of cutting means.
In the drawings, reference character l0 indicates the cylindrical outer wall of the container, which is closed at one end by an integral end member H and at the other end by a cap i2 having a flange that may be secured to the wall by crimping or in other known manner, or which may be removable if preferred. Inner flanges l4 and IS on the respective end members of the container may act as journals to some extent for a roll of tape if desired.
The wall I0 is provided with an axially extending slot at H for easy entry of the tape through the wall of the container. A hump I8 is formed on the wall, preferably in the form of a ridge parallel to the slot and spaced from it so as to leave a smooth surface between the hump and the slot to which the end portion of the tape may adhere for a distance of one-quarter inch or thereabouts.
On the end member H there is mounted pivotally a member 2|. on a pivot 20, said member having a lateral arm 22 formed so as to be concentric with the periphery of the Wall l0 when the arm is in closed or active position. At the end of the member 2| remote from the pivot a flange 2| is recurved toward the pivot, said arm supporting a blade 23 consisting of a narrow strip of hardened steel. The blade may be attached to the arm by crimping the end of the arm or it may be set into the end of the arm.
and molded in place if the arm is made of plastic material, or otherwise attached.
The sharp edge of the blade is directed toward the base of the hump and the parts are so constructed that tape passing from the hump down to the periphery of the casing is substantially perpendicular to the plane of the blade (Fig. 6) so that a pull on the tape will cause it to be severed cleanly and easily when the arm is closed, by a combined tearing and cutting action. The portion of tape next to the severed end is pressed down on the surface I9 and clamped between said surface and the under face of arm 22. Said portion of the tape is also covered by the arm 22, so that it stays in place and is protected against damage and dirt.
The end of member 22 serves as a handle for moving arm 22, but other handle means may be used. Preferably tape is used that has a backing of cloth or like material and it is arranged with its sticky side down, but the sticky side may be up as the tape emerges if preferred.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that many changes may be made in the devices herein disclosed, all without departing from the spirit of the invention; and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A dispenser for adhesive tape comprising a casing having side walls and a cylindrical connecting wall, a transverse slot in said connecting wall, a ridge on said connecting wall spaced from said slot and parallel thereto, an arm pivoted to the casing to swing on an axis parallel to said ridge and slot, said arm having a portion shaped to clamp the tape against the connecting wall and extending slightly beyond said ridge, the outer end of said portion being recurved toward said ridge and having a cutting edge at its extreme end, said recurved portion when in operative position lying at an angle to the surface of the connecting wall and inclined toward the adjacent base of said ridge and approximately in a plane perpendicular to the portion of the tape extending from the top of the ridge to said connecting wall.
2. A dispenser for adhesive tape comprising a casing having side walls and a cylindrical connecting wall, a ridge on said cylindrical Wall and extending transversely thereof, a pivot on a side wall, a membermovably mounted on said pivot, an outlet slot inthe connecting wallbetween the ridge and the pivot, said slot being parallel to said ridge, a lateral finger on said pivoted mem ber concentric with the connecting wall, saidfinger being movable into positionto close the slot and clamp the tape between-itsunder face and the outer face of the connecting wall, the
outer end of the finger extending slightly-beyond said ridge and being recurved toward the pivot of said member, and a blade mounted on saidrecurved portion at an angle to the surface of the connecting wall and inclined toward the adjacent base of said ridge; said blade when in its 4 operative position lying approximately in a plane perpendicular to the portion of the tape extending from the top of the ridge down to said connecting wall.
