No. 324,802. 8 Patented Aug. '25, 1885.

NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK BALDWIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SCARF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,802, dated August 25, 1885. Application filed January 27, 1885. (Novlmodel.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BALDWIN, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, and a citizen of the United States of America, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scarfs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, asingle` figure, which is a rear or inner face view of a scarf containing my invention.
My invention relates to what are known in the trade as dat77 scarfs for gentlemens wear-that is to say, formed of two crossaprons7 and a centerpiece-and designed to cover the portion of the shirt bosom left exposed by a high-cut vest; and it consists in the combination of the upper end of such scarf with a metal support and former formed of wire, bent into the appropriate form and secured to the scarf between the fabrics forming the front and the lining, as described herein, and shown in the drawing.
A A are the cross-aprons. B (shown in broken lines) is the center-piece; C, the shield, and D the neckband. E is a support orformer, consisting of a piece of metal wire, preferably hard brass wire, of about the size represented in the drawing. It extends, preferably, across the upper end of the scarf between the two upper angles, a c. Between those points it is curved to correspond with the curvature of the upper-edge line of the scarf, and the ends b b are bent downward so as to be parallel with the upper outer edges, c c', of the scarf. The upper edges of the fabric forming the front of the aprons is folded over back upon itself, as seen at d d', and the wire E is preferably laid down upon these folds and secured in place by some suitable lneans-as stitching the same to the fabric at the angles a c with thread, or at the loops e c', or at both. The upper edge of the center-piece is preferably folded upon the central portion of the wire and stitched to the back lining by aline of stitches below the wire, as shown. This wire former may be made convex toward the front of the scarf, whereby an outward convexity is imparted to the upper portion of the scarf, conforming it to the curvature of the neck of the wearer.
I am aware that scarf-shields have been used made of sheet metal and extending across the upper end of the scarf, which, being curved, have given a curvature to thc scarf to conform to the curvature of the neck or breast of the wearer; also that separate strips of dat sheet metal have been used for the purpose secured to the shield. I do not claim such devices.
The prevailing style of collars now worn renders it desirable that the neckband should be attached to the shield not very far from the center of the scarf, as atff, and that this may be done the shield should not be very wide. New, with a narrow shield only the upper outer corners of the scarf are not supported, rendering them liable to fold over and soil much easier than when supported. This objection or difficulty is removed by the use of my former. It is not absolutely necessary that it should extend to the extreme end of the aprons, one of its principal uses being t0 hold the scarf convexly curved when placed in the boxes for exhibition and sale. It will be found that a former that does not extend entirely across the top of the scarf will effect the obk] ect sought, though not so perfectly as when made as shown.
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a flat scarf, the combination, with the cross-aprons, the center-piece, and the shield, of the metal wire support and former E, secured tothe scarf near its upper edge between the fabric forming the front and that forming the back faces of the scarf, and extending along the line of said upper edge beyond the side edges of the shield on each side thereof, as and for the purpose specified.
FRANK BALDWIN.
