(Cl. 118-227) The present invention relates to gluers and is concerned more particularly with providing an improved gluer which is capable of operating with folded sheets, for example of the type used for billboard advertising, to apply glue to opposite sides of these to facilitate the billboard posting operation.
It is a general object of the invention to provide an improved gluer.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gluer in which the picker fingers for removing the coated paper from the gluing rolls are assembled in units to facilitate both assembly and cleaning operations.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gluer in which the upper feed rolls are advantageously mounted for movement as an assembly into and out of operative position and the rolls are individually provided with a floating mounting to accommodate irregularities in the feed.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide an improved gluer including an upper glue roll and a lower glue roll for gluing opposite sides of a sheet of paper or sheets of paper passing therethrough in which the glue is furnished to an upper tank under pressure to force its feed through the glue feeding gap, and any excess glue is fed downwardly from the upper feed tank for the upper roll to the lower feed tank to the lower rolls.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a gluer construction in which separate supplies of glue are provided for the respective upper and lower rolls and in which the glue is continuously circulating being fed to the upper roll first, the excess being fed to the lower roll, and the excess from there being returned to the supply tank for recirculation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof taken in conjunction with the attached drawings, in which:

Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the gluer includes a frame construction 10 on which various components are mounted including a pair of conventional feed conveyors 11 for conveying articles or sheets to be glued to the machine, this feed conveyor 11 feeding on to a plurality of parallel rails 12 which are suitably mounted on the frame of the machine and extend past respective upper idler feed rollers 13 (FIG. 3) and lower driving feed rollers 14, from which the sheet of paper 15 is fed over the rails 12 to engage and pass between upper glue roll iCe . one side wall formed by the upper glue roll 16. The top of this glue pot is closed by a top plate 32 which also engages the glue roll 16 and enables pumping of the glue under pressure through this upper chamber. An exit opening 33 is provided in each end wall 34 of the glue pot, these openings communicating with respective curved pipes 36 (FIGS. 1 and 2) which lead downwardly and discharge into a lower glue pot 37 (FIG. 3). The pot 37 has a vertical overflow pipe 38 mounted therein. The open upper end of the pipe 38 determines the level 3 of the glue therein and communicates at its bottom with the glue tank 26. The pipe 38 is held in place in a coupling 41 on the tank having a bayonet slot 42 to re ceive a support pin 43 on the pipe.
The lower glue pot 37 is seated in a pan 101, FIG.
3, carried by four upstanding arms 102 from respective shafts 103 supported in a frame. A lever 104 secured to the mounting 10 for one of the upstanding arms 102 enables lowering of these arms for disassembly of the pan for repair or cleaning.
The lower feed rolls 14 (FIGS. 2 and 3) are supported on a transverse shaft 46 journaled in suitable end frame members 47 and driven by a gear 48 from a gear train 49 from the main drive shaft 91. Two of these feed rolls 14 are associated with each of the intake belts 11, and they have associated therewith a floating roller 13 which is free for vertical sliding movement in a vertical slot 51 in a casting 52 which is carried by a pair of cross shafts 53. There is a roller 13 aligned with each of the rollers 14 to feed sheets of paper interposed therebetween. As seen in FIG. 2 the shafts 53 are mounted at each end in a casting 54, each of which extends downwardly and is pivoted at 55 so that it can be swung from the full line position to the dotted line position shown to disengage the roller feed drive for purposes of inspection, repair or assembly.
From the feed rolls 13 and 1 1 a folded sheet 15 of paper is transferred into contact with the gluing rolls as seen in FIG. 3, and these rolls are preferably provided with a series of respective grooves 61. The upper roll 16 is carried by a shaft 62 which is surrounded by as ecentric 63 (FIGS. 3-5) at either end controlled by a handle. Each eccentric engages in a circular aperture in end wall 34 of the upper glue pot 31 (FIG. 4). The eccentric 63 is suitably connected to a slotted strap 67a which engages a pin 68 to limit relative adjusting movement between the glue pot 31 and roller 16 (FIGS. 3 and 5). Movement of the eccentric 63 serves to move the glue pot 31 from the position shown in FIGS. 3 and 5 respectively, and vary the spacing between the upper glue roll 16 and the cut off edge 68a of the lower wall of the tank or pot 31.
The end of the shaft 62 (FIGS. 2 and 4) is journaled in a sliding block 69 (FIG. 4) in the frame piece 70, which is engaged in a vertical slot 71 to slide under control of an adjusting screw 72 having a handwheel or nut '73 operating against the upper wall 70a of the side frame piece. The shaft 62 carries a pinion '76 meshing with a pinion 77 journaled in a connecting link 78 also pivoted on shaft 62, and also in depending connecting link 79 extending downwardly to a shaft 81 carrying a pinion S2. The links 78 and 7? in effect form a toggle link mounting for the intermediate pinion 49 so as to maintain the meshed drive of the gear train irrespective of the vertically adjusted position of the upper pinion 76. The pinion 82 is driven from the main drive shaft 91 through a suitable gear.
The lower roll is carried by a shaft 91 which is journaled in a fixed manner in the two side frames, and carries the main drive pinion 92 (FIG. 6).
The upper picker finger assembly 18 is formed in twohalves, and each half comprises a series of picker fingers 106 carried by respective transverse rods 107 and 108,. and these rods rest in at each end a supporting bracket 109. Each bracket 109 (FIG. 3) has a curved locking end 110 for the right hand rod 107 and a support 111 for the other rod 108. The left hand rod 108 is disposed at each end below a gravity type latch pawl 117 pivoted on a bracket 121 carried by a transverse tie shaft 118- extending between the two opposite side frame pieces. The shaft 118 at its center (FIG. 8) carries a center bracket 121 which has pivoted therein the center pawls 117 for the two upper picker assembly halves. By swing ing the pawls 117, the picker finger assembly 18 can be removed in its entirety. Each picker finger assembly comprises the rod 107, the picker fingers 106 and spacing sleeves 128 interposed therebetween, the entire assembly being maintained by means of the sleeves 128 and the picker fingers 1 27 being retained by respective nuts 129 on threaded portions of each end of the rod 107. As seen in FIG. 7 the outer end of each picker assembly is provided with an extension 107a of the rod 107 which rests freely on the side frame member with a shouldered portion overlapping the bracket 10 to prevent endwise displacement. As seen in FIG. 8 the inner ends of the respective rods 107 are held by the bracket 121.
The lower picker assembly 19 is fabricated similarly to the upper picker assembly and has respective rods 130 and 131 (FIGS. 3 and 6) carrying picker fingers 132. The rod 131 has threaded therein a fitting or cap 133 at its inner end having a rounded nose 133a seated in a socket in a bracket 136 carried by a cross shaft 135. At its outside end each rod 131 carries an extension 137 (FIGS. 1 and 6) which has a recess at its end engaged by a latching pin 138 urged to the position shown by a spring 139 in the side frame member and having a control knob 141. By moving the control knobs 141 outwardly, the outermost ends of the rods 131 are released, and they can be swung upwardly or downwardly to disengage the rounded inner ends from the cooperating rounded seats. To support the two picker assembly halves of the lower picker construction, certain of the picker fingers 132 as seen in FIG. 3 extend downwardly and have a half round set to engage over the shaft 135.
In the operation of the gluer, the sheet material (FIG. 3) is fed to the feed rolls 14 and 13 across the supporting rails 12 and is transferred by these feed rolls to the glue rolls 16 and 17 which apply glue to respective upper and lower surfaces thereof from the respective glue pots 31 and 37. The coated sheet material is discharged from between the gluing rolls 16 and 17 and, if it adheres to either gluing roll, it is separated therefrom by the upper stripper fingers 106 or the lower stripper fingers 132 across which it is supported into engagement with a discharge conveyor 20.
In the operation of the gluer, when a particular gluing operation is completed, the upper set of stripper fingers can be removed from the machine by swinging the gravity latches 117 (FIG. 3) from over the rod 108, and lifting this rod to remove the two picker assemblies of the upper feed roll from the machine for cleaning. The lower picker assemblies can be removed by withdrawing the two spr-ing-urged latches 141 (FIG. 1) so as to release the rods 131 and allow lifting these shafts and the picker fingers 132 from engagement with the tie shafts when they can be cleaned and replaced ready for the next operation.
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that the invention is capable of variation and modification from the form shown so that the scope thereof should be limited only by the proper interpretation and scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a gluer, a frame, a gluing roll journaled on said frame, means for applying glue to said gluing roll, means for feeding a sheet past the gluing roll to have glue applied thereto, and a picker assembly for stripping the sheet of material upon the roll including a pair of transverse support rods, a series of parallel picker fingers carried by and extending transversely to the support rods, and disposed in stripping relation with the surface of said roll, one of said support rods for said picker fingers having its ends extended for support engagement with the frame, and means for quick detachable mounting of said picker assembly on the gluer frame including a springurged latch on said frame for engaging said one support rod to maintain it against displacement with respect to said frame.
2. In a gluer, a frame, a gluing roll journaled on said frame, means for applying glue to said gluing roll, means for feeding a sheet past the gluing roll to have glue applied thereto, and a picker assembly for stripping the sheet of material upon the roll including a pair of transverse support rods, a series of parallel picker fingers carried by and extending transversely to the support rods, and disposed in stripping relation with the surface of said roll, and means for quick detachable mounting of said picker assembly on the gluer frame including a bracket having a horizontal support member with curved ends, one end of said bracket curving up and over the top of one of said rods, and the other end of said support member curving up adjacent the side of the other of said rods so as to prevent horizontal displacement thereof, and a latch member on the frame for engaging above the other of said rods.
3. In a gluer as recited in claim 2 in which one of said support rods for said picker fingers has its ends extended for supporting engagement with the frame, and in which a plurality of said picker members have seats formed in the bottom surface thereof, and a transverse frame member for engagement by said seats.
4. In a gluer for applying glue to opposite surfaces of sheet material passing through the gluer, a frame, a pair of vertically spaced gluing rolls journaled on said frame in cooperative relation, means mounting the upper of said gluing rolls for both vertical and horizontal adjustment, means for rotating said gluing rolls, the rotating means for said upper roll including a pinion attached thereto, a second pinion having a fixed journaled mounting on the frame, an intermediate pinion meshing with said first-named pinion and said second pinion, a toggle linkage connecting said firstna-med pinion, said intermediate pinion and said second pinion to provide for floating mounting of said first-named pinion while maintaining the drive thereof, means for feeding sheet material to said gluing rolls, a first glue pot associated with the upper one of said gluing rolls and having said gluing roll forming one wall of the glue pot, said glue pot having a lower wall in spaced relation to the gluing roll to release a layer of glue as the roll is rotated, a second glue pot associated with said lower roll and disposed to immerse the lower portion of the roll therein, a supply tank for glue, a pump for withdrawing glue from said supply tank, piping leading from said pump to said upper glue pot, piping leading from said upper glue pot to said lower glue pot, and discharge pipe meins leading from said lower glue pot to said supply tan (References on following page) References Cited by the Examiner UNITED STATES PATENTS Parks 118241 X Dixon 118-245 X Da1ey.

Claims (1)

1. IN A GLUER, A FRAME, A GLUING ROLL JOURNALED ON SAID FRAME, MEANS FOR APPLYING GLUE TO SAID GLUING ROLL, MEANS FOR FEEDING A SHEET PAST THE GLUING ROLL TO HAVE GLUE APPLIED THERETO, AND A PICKER ASSEMBLY FOR STRIPPING THE SHEET OF MATERIAL UPON THE ROLL INCLUDING A PAIR OF TRANSVERSE SUPPORT RODS, A SERIES OF PARALLEL PICKER FINGERS CARRIED BY AND EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY TO THE SUPPORT RODS, AND DISPOSED IN STRIPPING RELATION WITH THE SURFACE OF SAID ROLL, ONE OF SAID SUPPORT RODS FOR SAID PICKER FINGERS HAVING ITS ENDS EXTENDED FOR SUPPORT ENGAGEMENT WITH THE FRAME, AND MEANS FOR QUICK DETACHABLE MOUNTING OF SAID PICKER ASSEMBLY ON THE GLUER FRAME INCLUDING A SPRINGURGED LATCH ON SAID FRAME FOR ENGAGING SAID ONE SUPPORT ROD TO MAINTAIN IT AGAINST DISPLACEMENT WITH RESPECT TO SAID FRAME.
