DANIEL E. POWERS, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE PATENT PAPER CIGAR BOX COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,588, dated August 18, 1885.
Application filed December 19, 1884.
To rtZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. Pownns, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, ofwhich the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- 1ngs.
This invention relates to paper boxes the sides and bottom of which are in one piece.
The object of the invention is to provide a box of this character of uniform thickness of material which will be strong, cheap, and
I 5 durable.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the under side of a blank from which the body of this improved box is constructed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of this improved box, the dovetail joint being in dicatcd at one end by dotted lines and a por tion of one corner at the opposite end being broken away. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a corner section of this improved box,
wherein the material is upset at the angles of the sides and ends with the bottom thereof, whereby said bottom is made flush with the lower edges of the sides and ends. Fig. 4 is a transverse section, on an enlarged scale,
of a segment of this improved box, showing the upsetting of the connecting-web between a side or end and the bottom of the box.
Similar letters of reference indicate come sponding parts in the different figures.
A represents the blank for the body of the box, and B the lid. The blank A is composed of thick straw-board or board composed of other suitablepaper-stock, and comprises 0 a bottom section, a, side flaps, b, and end flaps, c c. Theside flaps, b I), are partially severed by means of longitudinal scores 2 z from the bottom section, a, to which they remain attached by means of the connecting- 5 web d. These scores are cut or impressed in the blank at points distant from the side edges thereof equal to the interior depth, or nearly so, of the box to be formed.
The end (No model.)
flaps, c 0, are partially severed by means of transverse scores 3 yfrom the bottom section, a, to which they remain attached, said transverse scores connecting the outer ends of the longitudinal scores. The side flaps, b b, are provided at their ends with recesses b, the inner faces of said recesses being in line with the transverse scores 3 and the end flaps, 0 e, are provided with tenons c, which project laterally from the side edges of said flaps, said side edges being in line with the longitudinal scores 2 z.
In forming the box from the blank thus de-' scribed the side flaps, b b, and the end flaps, c c, are folded at right angles to the bottom a on the lines of the longitudinal and trans verse scores, and the tenons c of the end 6 flaps, 0, fit in the recesses bof the side flaps, b. W'hen it is desired that the bottom be flush with the lower edges of the sides and ends, to form square corners therewith, press ore is exerted upon the outer edges of the side and end flaps during the process of folding, whereby the unsevered material at the angles is upset and the severed portionf of the side and end flaps pressed down flush with the under surface of the bottom section.
If desired that the cover shut between the ends flush with/the upper edges thereof, the end flaps, c, are the thickness of the board deeper than the side flaps.
The blank thus folded and upset is properly 8o cemented or pasted at the corners and covered with a layer, B, of paper, which hides the joints and assists in stiffening the box.
Any suit-able cover may be used for the body thus formed; but when the box is to be used for cigars the cover is preferably attached at the rear edge by means of a flexible cloth or, other suitable hinge at the rear side of the box, and a suitable catch or fastening device, D, is attached to the front edge of the lid and front side of the box.
\V hen used for cigars, the paperboard is preferably ornamented in imitation of cedarwood.
The box thuseonstrncted is strong, cheap, and durable.
I claim as my invention A box-body the sides and ends of which are integral with its bottom, being partially severed therefrom, the connecting-web of 5 material being upset, whereby square corners are formed, said sides and ends being interlocked by recesses and tenons, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix n1 in presence of two Witnesses.
