Heretofore, home clothes dryers have been so constructed that clothes to be dried must be hung or draped over cords, rods, bars, etc. Many garments such as sweaters, blouses, socks, etc., :become warped and stretched if they are hung on conventional dryers. The present invention is directed at an improved dryer construction in which a screen is supported in a horizontal position in or on a bathtub, sink, shower stall, and the like. A plurality of such screens can be supported in a stack. The clothes to be dried rest without strain upon the horizontal screens. Water drains from the clothes and through the screens to the bathtub or sink. Quick mounting supports including suction cups are provided for the dryers. The dryers can be quickly set up and taken down.

It is therefore a principal object of the invention to provide a portable clothes dryer including one or more fabric mesh screens and a plurality of supports for the screen or screens, the supports being provided with means for mounting on a bathtub, sink, or shower stall, or on tile walls or tile door of a bathroom.

Another object is to provide a clothes dryer as described, wherein the supports include telescopically connected posts for mounting a plurality of mesh screens in a stacked array.

A further object is to provide a clothes dryer as described wherein the supports have clamps or suction cups for mounting them in horizontal or vertical positions.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring first to FIGS. 1-4, there is shown a clothes dryer 10 including a first rectangular fabric mesh screen 12 having binding tapes 14 secured by stitching 16 along each of its four edges. Within each tape is a cord 18 whose free ends I19 extend outwardly of opposite ends of the tape. At each corner of the screen, the tapes terminate so that two loose free ends 19 are available for tying on any one of four posts 20. The posts serve as supports for the screen on a bathtub B. The bottom end of each post is anchored in a recess 21 of a rubber suction cup 22. The four cups are adhered to the flat upper surface S near the four corners of the rim of the bathtub. Thus the posts 20 are axially vertical- Each post may have one or more axially spaced transverse holes '23 for receiving one of the cord ends 19 as best shown in FIG. 4. A cylindrical clamp .25 is provided for detachably securing the two cord ends =19 together .at each post. The clamp 25 has a hollow body with holes 26 at opposite ends through which the cord ends 19 can be threaded. The holes 26 open into an enlarged chamber 28. A peg 30 can be fitted into holes 32 in opposite Walls of the chamber for wedging portions of the cord ends securely inside chamber 28. If the peg is pulled out of the clamp, the cord ends are released and the cords can then be disengaged fr-om the posts 20. The clamp 25 serves as a slip clamp since the cord ends can be pulled taut outwardly of the posts and through the clamp body. Then the peg 30 can be inserted in the clamp body to wedge the cord ends in place. Each post has a head 33 for convenience in handling the post.

A second mesh screen 12a identical in structure to screen .12 can be mounted below screen 12, as shown in FIG. 1. The cord ends 19 of screen 12a .will be engaged in holes 23 in posts 20 located below the upper holes.

FIGS. 5 and 6 show another clamp 25:: for the cord ends 19. This clamp has a pair of

34, 35 secured together at their ends by links 36. The upper bar 34 is adapted to swing in one direction, on the bottom pivotal ends of the links, for example, from neutral to the right as viewed in FIG. 5 in order to clamp the cord ends 19. Sinusoidal indentations and projections 38 are formed on the inner edge of bar 34 and these interfit with similar mating indentations and projections 39 in inner opposing edge of bar 35. In the interfitting position the links 36 assume an inclined or oblique position with respect to the lengths of the

34, 35 so that the cordends l9 are wedged tightly between the bats. 'Io release the cord ends, the upper bar 34 is pulled outwardly as indicated by arrow A to pivot the links counterclockwise on pins 41 as viewed in FIG. 5. This movement separates the bars and the cord ends will be released. This clamp 25a may be used instead of clamp 25 and has the advantage that no separable peg is employed as in claim 25.

It will be noted that two screens 12 and 12a are supported in a horizontal position over the bath tub B in FIG. 1. This permits wet clothes such as sweater C and other garments to lay in a horizontal position on the screens while they drain off into the bathtub. No clothespins, hooks, or other devices which would strain, stretch, warp and distort the shapes of the clothes, are attached to the clothes. As each garment dries, it can be removed from the screens in the dryer and other garments can be placed on the screens to dry. The suction cups can readily be detached from the bathtub and the dry fabric screens can be folded or rolled up to occupy very small space. This type of dryer is adapted for home use; or it can be used by travelers in hotels, motels, hospitals and other places where suitable dryers for laundry are rarely provided. A multiple screen dryer can be packed with luggage in a very small space. The posts can be made of light metal such as aluminum or of plastic. More than two screens such as illustrated in FIG. 1 can be mounted on the posts.

FIG. 7 shows another dryer 10:: which is similar to dryer '10 except that each post 26' is made of a plurality of short post sections or rods 50 having a stud 51 at one end for interfitting into a recess 53 at the other end. The stud of the bottom rod 50 fits into recess 21' of suction cup 22. Screen 12b has a binding tape 14' secured by stitching 16' around all four edges of the rectangular screen. The cords 18 are omitted. Instead, eyelets 52 are provided at the four corners of the screen, and short cords 18a are looped in the eyelets. The free ends 19' of each cord are engaged by peg 30 in one of clamps 25 in the same manner as illustrated in FIG. 4. One of the ends of each cord passes through a hole 23' near the upper end of each rod 50. The post may have two, three or more rod sections 50 telescopically connected in axial alignment. The posts 20' can be taken apart and packed in a very small space.

FIG. 8 shows parts of a dryer 10b in which the ends 19a of the cords which support a dryer screen are tied in a knot 55 at hole 23" of post 20b. The bottom end of the post is inserted into a sleeve 56 of a U-shaped spring clamp 60 which engages over the top of a wall W of a bathtub or sink.

FIG. 9 shows an angle bracket 62 secured by suction cups 64 to the side of a wall W of a sink or bathtub. The bracket has a hole 65 which engages ends 1% of a cord or cords for supporting a fabric mesh screen of a dryer. The cord ends are tied to form knot 55'.

FIGS. 10 and 11 show a dryer 100 similar to dryer 10a. Dryer 100 has cords 18a looped around eyelets 52 in screen 12b in a manner similar to that shown in dryer 10a of FIG. 7. The outer free ends 19 of the cords 18a at the four corners of the dryer screen 12b are secured by knots 55" to eyes 66 whose shanks 67 are screwed into the threaded recesses 21" at apical ends of suction cups 22a. The suction cups are attached to inner sides of the Walls W" of a bathtub or sink SK. In this arrangement of the dryer, the dryer is Wholly disposed within the bathtub or sink where it is out of the way and clear of the top of the bathtub or sink. This dryer can be rolled of folded up to form a very small package especially useful for travelers and others requiring a very compact clothes dryer.

FIGS. 12-14 show a dryer support 200 including a post or post section 20" having an upwardly extending integral hook 70 at one side and an eye or loop 72 at the other side. The bottom end of the post has a threaded stud 51' which can be screwed into a threaded recess 21a of a suction cup 22b. A threaded recess at the upper end of the post section can receive the threaded shank 73 of a cap screw 33'. Dryer support 20c is shown disassembled in FIG. 12 and assembled in FIG. 13. The dryer support 20c having a single section 20" is shown mounted on the upper surface S of a bathtub B at a bathroom wall WL. Another dryer support 20c is assembled by telescopically engaging in axial alignment, four identical post sections 20". The support 200' is carried by suction cup 2212 adhering to tile floor F of the bathroom adjacent to the outer wall WL of the bathtub.

Suction cups 22a and 22a" have their eyes 66', 66 engaged on post 200 and 200'. The cups extend laterally of the posts and adhere to walls WL and WL. The screen 12d is supported in a horizontal, taut position over the bathtub. Wet garments can be placed on screen 12d to drain into the bathtub.

Rubber bands are looped around eyelets 52 at the four corners of the fabric mesh screen. The outer ends of the rubber bands are engaged on the hooks 70 of the uppermost post sections of two supports 20c and upon the hooks of two posts 200. If cords 18a are used such as shown in FIG. 7, then these cords can be tied to the eyes 72. The uppermost post section of a post 200 has a screw cap 33".

The engagement of the rubber bands on the hooks 70 provides a taut support for the screen to insure that it remains horizontal at all times. The looped ends of the rubber bands can readily be detached from the hooks 70 and the supports can be taken apart for convenient transportation and storage. The

The posts 20c and 200' can be made longer by adding more post sections 20" for supporting a plurality of screens in spaced, parallel disposition over the bathtub.

Referring now to the modified form of dryer 10x shown in FIGS. 15 to 18, inclusive, herein the fabric mesh screen 12x is square in shape with binding tapes 14x around the peripheries thereof. A pair of

84, 84 are secured flatwise obliquely across the screen 12x from corner to corner by a row of stitching 86. The ends 88 of the ribbons extend beyond the corners and are fastened to suction cups 22x attached to the inner surfaces of the Walls Wx of the tub SKx, by means of a pair of metal split rings 90 pivotally fastened to the suction cups. The ends 88 of the ribbons are threaded through both rings in one direction and then looped around one of the rings and reversed and threaded through the other ring, forming a knob that is clamped by the rings. The dryer 10x, similarly to dryer 100, can be wholly disposed within the tub and can be rolled or folded up to form a very small package.

The several dryers described all have the common characteristic that they can he quickly installed on a sink or bathtub and can be quickly detached. They all can be packed to occupy very small storage space. For home use, two, three, four or more screens can be stacked for drying a considerable number of garments at the same time. The coarse mesh fabric screens provided ample support for the garments while permitting free water drainage, and free air circulation. The several dryers can be manufactured at low cost by mass production methods on well known metal, plastic and rubber molding machinery. The dryers will serve as useful accessories in homes, hotels, and wherever a compact, efficient, honizontal dryer is required for a garment or garments.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined 1n the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, What I clalm as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1. A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, binding tape sewn to all four edges of the screen for reinforcing the same, cords extending along all four edges of the screen and having free ends extending ouwardly of the screen at all four corners thereof, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position at four corners of the fixture, said free ends of the cords being detachably secured to the posts at the four corners of the screen respectively, whereby said screen is supported in a horizontal position over said fixture for draining into said fixture water from a wet garment placed on said screen.

2. A clothes dryer, comprising a plurality of rectangular fabric mesh screens, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position, and cords detachably securing the four corners of each of said screens to the four posts respectively with the screens disposed horizontal, vertically spaced positions over said fixture.

3. A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, binding tape sewn to all four edges of the screen for reinforcing the same, cords extending along all four edges of the screen and having free ends extending outwardly of the screen at all four corners thereof, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position at four corners of the fixture, and clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the posts and holding the cords taut, whereby said screen is supported in a horizontal position over said fixture.

4. A clothes dryer, comprising a plurality of rectangular fabric mesh screens, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position, cords attached to the four corners of each of said screens, and clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the post and holding the cords taut, whereby said screens are supported in horizontal, vertically spaced positions over said fixtures.

5. A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, binding tape sewn to all four edges of the screen for reinforcing the same, cords extending along all four edges of the screen and having free ends extending outwardly of the screen at all four corners thereof, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position at four corners of the fixture, clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the posts and holding the cords taut, whereby said screen is supported in a horizontal position over said fixture, each of said clamps having a cylindrical body with a passage extending axially therethrough, said free ends of the cords extending through the passages in the respective clamps, and pegs extending transversely through the cylindrical bodies of the clamps and wedging the ends of the cords in said passages.

6. A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, binding tape sewn to all four edges of the screen for reinforcing the same, cords extending along all four edges of the screen and having free ends extending outwardly of the screen at all four corners thereof, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position at four corners of the fixture, and clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the posts and holding the cords taut, whereby said screen is supported in a horizontal position over said fixture, each of said clamps including two bars secured in spaced, parallel disposition by two pivotable links, said bars having opposing edges formed with mating sinuous indentations and projections for wedging free ends of the cords therebetween when the links are angularly disposed to the lengths of the bars.

7. A clothes dryer, comprising a plurality of rectangular fabric mesh screens, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position, cords attached to the four corners of each of said screens, clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the posts and holding the cords taut, whereby said screens are supported in horizontal, vertically spaced positions over said fixtures, each of said clamps having a cylindrical body with a passage extending axially therethrough, said free ends of the cords extending through the passages in the respective clamps, and pegs extending transversely through the cylindrical bodies of the clamps and wedging the ends of the cords in said passages.

8. A clothes dryer, comprising a plurality of rectangular fabric mesh screens, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position, cords attached to the four corners of each of said screens, and clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the posts and holding the cords taut, whereby said screens are supported in horizontal, vertically spaced positions over said fixtures, each of said clamps including two bars secured in spaced, parallel disposition by two pivotable links, said bars having opposing edges formed with mating sinuous indentations and projections for wedging free ends to the cords therebetween when the links are angularly disposed to the lengths of the bars.

9. A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, binding tape sewn to all four edges of the screen for reinforcing the same, cords extending along all four edges of the screen and having free ends extending outwardly of the screen at all four corners thereof, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position at four corners of the fixture, said free ends of the cords being detachably secured to the posts at the four corners of the screen respectively, whereby said screen is supported in a horizontal position over said fixture for draining into said fixture water from a wet garment placed on said screen, each of said posts including a plurality of rod-like sections detachably secured together in axial alignment, each of said sections having a stud at one end and a recess at the other end, so that the stud of one section fits frictionally and removably into the recess of an adjacent section, each of said sections having a transverse aperture for receiving one of the ends of one of the cords.

10. A clothes dryer, comprising a plurality of rectangular fabric mesh screens, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position, and cords detachably securing the four corners of each of said screens to the four posts respectively with the screens disposed in horizontal, vertically spaced positions over said fixture, each of said posts including a plurality of rod-like sections detachably secured together in axial alignment, each of said sections having a stud at one end and a recess at the other end, so that the stud of one section fits frictionally and removably into the recess of an adjacent section, each of said sections having a transverse aperture for receiving one of the ends of one of the cords.

11. A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, binding tape sewn to all four edges of the screen for reinforcing the same, cords extending along all four edges of the screen and having free ends extending outwardly of the screen at all four corners thereof, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position at four corners of the fixture, and clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the posts and holding the cords taut, whereby said screen is supported in a horizontal position over said fixture, each of said posts including a plurality of rod-like sections detachably secured together in axial alignment, each of said sections having a stud at one end and a recess at the other end, so that the stud of one section fits frictionally and removably into the recess of an adjacent section, each of said sections having a transverse aperture for receiving one of the ends of one of the cords.

12. A clothes dryer, comprising a plurality of rectangular fabric mesh screens, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position, cords attached to the four corners of each of said screens, and clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the posts and holding the cords taut, whereby said screens are supported in horizontal, vertically spaced positions over said fixtures, each of said posts including a plurality of rod-like sections detachably secured together in axial alignment, each of said sections having a stud at one end and a recess at the other end, so that the stud of one sections fits frictionally and removably into the recess of an adjacent section, each of said sections having a transverse aperture for receiving one of the ends of one of the cords.

13. A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, binding tape sewn to all four edges of the screen for reinforcing the same, cords extending along all four edges of the screen and having free ends extending outwardly of the screen at all four corners thereof, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position at four corners of the fixture, clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the posts and holding the cords taut, whereby said screen is supported in a horizontal position over said fixture, each of said clamps having a cylindrical body with a passage extending axially therethrough, said free ends of the cords extending through the passages in the respective clamps, and pegs extending transversely through the cylindrical bodies of the clamps and wedging the ends of the cords in said passages, each of said posts including a plurality of rod-like sections detachably,

secured together in axial alignment, each of said sections having a stud at one end and a recess at the other end, so that the stud of one section fits frictionally and removably into the recess of an adjacent section, each of said sections having a transverse aperture for receiving one of the ends of one of the cords.

14. A clothes dryer, comprising a plurality of rectangular fabric mesh screens, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position, cords attached to the four corners of each of said screens, clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the posts and holding the cords taut, whereby said screens are supported in horizontal, vertically spaced positions over said fixtures, each of said clamps having a cylindrical body with a passage extending axially therethrough, said free ends of the cords extending through the passages in the respective clamps. and pegs extending transversely through the cylindrical bodies of the clamps and wedging the ends of the cords in said passages, each of said posts including a plurality of rod-like sections detachably secured together in axial alignment, each of said sections having a stud at one end and a recess at the other end, so that the stud of one section fits frictionally and removably into the recess of an adjacent section, each of said sections having a transverse aperture for receiving one of the ends of one of the cords.

15. A clothes dryer, comprising a plurality of rectangular fabric mesh screens, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position, cords attached to the four corners of each of said screens, and clamps detachably engaging the free ends of the cords on the posts and holding the cords taut, whereby said screens are supported in horizontal, vertically spaced positions over said fixtures, each of said clamps including two bars secured in spaced, parallel disposition by two pivotable links, said bars having opposing edges formed with mating sinuous indentations and projections for wedging free ends of the cords therebetween when the links are angularly disposed to the lengths of the bars, each of said posts including a plurality of rodlike sections detachably secured together in axial alignment, each of said sections having a stud at one end and a recess at the other end, so that the stud of one section fits frictionally and removably into the recess of an adjacent section, each of said sections having a transverse aperture for receiving one of the ends of one of the cords.

16. A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, eyelets at the four corners of said screen, endless elastic bands looped in the eyelets respectively and having looped ends extending outwardly of said corners of the screen, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for suporting the posts in axially vertical position, and a hook on each post engaged by a looped end of one of the elastic bands, whereby said screen is supportable in a horizontal taut position over said fixture.

17. A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, eyelets at the four corners of said screen, endless elastic bands looped in the eyelets respectively and having looped ends extending outwardly of said corners of the screen, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post in axially vertical position, each of said posts including a plurality of rod-like sections detachably secured together in axial alignment, each of said sections having a stud at one end and a recess at the other end, with the stud of each section fitting removably into the recess of an adjacent section, a hook and an eye on each of said sections, the looped end of each of said elastic bands being engaged on one of the hooks of one section of each post, whereby said screen is supportable in a horizontal taut position over said fixture.

A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, eyelets at the four corners of said screen, endless elastic bands looped in the eyelets respectively and having looped ends extending outwardly of said corners of the screen, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post in axially vertical position, each of said posts including a plurality of rod-like sections detachably secured together in axial alignment, each of said sections having a stud at one end and a recess at the other end, with the stud of each section fitting removably into the recess of an adjacent section, a hook and an eye on each of said sections, the looped end of each of said elastic bands being engaged on one of the hooks of one section of each post, whereby said screen is supportable in a horizontal taut position over said fixture, and other suction cups secured to the posts and extending laterally thereof for engaging on vertical wall surfaces to assist the first-named suction cups in holding the posts vertical and resisting tension in said elastic bands.

A clothes dryer, comprising a rectangular fabric mesh screen, eyelets at the four corners of said screen, endless elastic bands looped in the eyelets respectively and having looped ends extending outwardly of said corners of the screen, four posts, a suction cup at one end of each post for adhering to a bathroom fixture and for supporting the posts in axially vertical position, and a hook on each post engaged by a looped end of one of the elastic bands, whereby said screen is supportable in a horizontal taut position over said fixture, and other suction cups secured to the posts and extending laterally thereof for engaging on vertical wall surfaces to assist the first-named suction cups in holding the postsvertical and resisting tension in said elastic bands.

Claims

1. A CLOTHES DRYER, COMPRISING A RECTANGULAR FABRIC MESH SCREEN, BINDING TAPE SEWN TO ALL FOUR EDGES OF THE SCREEN FOR REINFORCING THE SAME, CORDS EXTENDING ALONG ALL FOUR EDGES OF THE SCREEN AND HAVING FREE ENDS EXTENDING OUTWARDLY OF THE SCREEN AT ALL FOUR CORNERS THEREOF, FOUR POSTS, A SUCTION CUP AT ONE END OF EACH POST FOR ADHERING TO A BATHROOM FIXTURE AND SUPPORTING THE POSTS IN AXIALLY VERTICAL POSITION AT FOUR CORNERS OF THE FIXTURE, SAID FREE ENDS OF THE CORDS BEING DETACHABLY SECURED TO THE POSTS AT FOUR CORNERS OF THE SCREEN RESPECTIVELY, WHEREBY SAID SCREEN IS SUPPORTED IN A HORIZONTAL POSITION OVER SAID FIXTURE FOR DRAINING INTO SAID FIXTURE WATER FROM A WET GARMENT PLACED ON SAID SCREEN.
