DUMPlNG-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,744, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed April 30, 1885. (Ifio model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. SEERY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping- Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention, in substance, consists, first, of a dumping-ear which has its body adapted at each of its four sides to be opened and closed, and arranged upon its truck or support to be upset in direction of either of its sides, adapted to be opened and closed for the dumping of its contents at said side, first having opened the Same, and to be Secured against I accidental upsetting; second, of a dumpingcar which has its body adapted to be opened and closed at its sides and to be upset in the direction of either of its so opening and clos' ing sides, and arranged upon its truck or support to be adjusted in height in relation there to, and as so adjusted secured against accidental displacement, as also secured against accidental upsetting; third, of a dumpingcar which has its body adapted to be opened and closed at either side or at two or more or all of its sides, and is provided with fasten- 1 body with the body detached.
ings for holding t-he so adapted opening and closing side or sides closed and against accidental opening when the same is closed, and which fastening is adapted to be operated to secure and release the so adapted opening and 1 closing Side to which it is applied and from and at the side or part of the car-body which is opposite thereto.
In the drawings the present improvements in dumping-cars are illustrated. Figure 1 is a side elevation with the car-body in its nor mal position and there secured. Fig. 2 is an end elevation with the car-body upset or dumped at one side of the car. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the truck or support of the car Fig. 4 is a plan or face view of the under side of the car-body. Figs. 5 and 6 are views in detail, hereinafter referred to.
In the drawings, A represents the body of a dumping-car, B its truck or support, and 0 its four wheels, all of which, except as to the features of this invention, are the same as ordinary. The bodyB is made of square shape,
and it consists of a bottom, D, four sides, E, and four corner-posts, F. Each side E of the body is suspended by loops or eyes a, attached to its upper edge upon and from a separate rod of the four horizontal metal rods I). The several rodsb join the corner-posts F of the car body, and, passing through the posts, are attached thereto by screw-nuts cl, applied to them on opposite sides of and jammed against the posts. The sides E of the car-body, suspended as described, are thus capable of being swung on said rods 1) to be opened and closed, and, closed, they fit between the corner-posts F, and are there held against accidental opening by means of a button or flatshaped fastening-plate, f-a separate one for each side. Each button-fastening f has a knob, g, for convenience in operating or handling it, and the fastenings on the two sides'of the body which are opposite to each other are attached to a common operating-rod, h, which extends horizontally across and under the bottom D of the car-body, and turns in suitable sup ports and bearings thereof.
The two button-fastenings f of each operating-rod h are at the opposite ends thereof, and they are situated in lines running at an angle to each other and on opposite sides of the axis of rotation of their rod h, and all so that by rotating said shaft both of said button-fastenings not only can and will be placed in position to fasten and hold closed the sides of the car to which they are applied, but also can and will be placed, the one in a position to hold its side of the car-body closed, and the other in position to allow its side of thecarbody to be opened.
The operating-rods 71'. for the button-fastenings can be worked from either of its ends, and thus the side of the car at which it is intended to dump the contents of the car can be released by operating its fastenings from the side of the ear opposite thereto.
G is a vertical metal loop or eye attached to the center of the car-body, and engaged with and hung upon and crossing a vertical metal loop or eye, H, at the upper end of a Vertical square-shaped standard, J, which is located and fits loosely within a corresponding shaped vertical socket, K, of the car truck or support, and is secured in said Socket by transverse bolts k, which pass loosely through holes Z in the Vertical walls of said socket and holes in in said standard J, and at one end are headed, and at the other end have a screw-nut, it, applied to them. This loop attachment of the car-body to its truck or support B enables the body to be upset and dumped in a direction toward either side thereof, or, in other words, in lines or directions practically at right angles to each other.
L are chains, each hung at one end to the eye (1 of a vertical and adjustable screw-eye, r. screwed into the bottom of the car-body and midway of the length of each of its sides. The lower end of the chain is connected to a metal cross-bar, t, and each bar is fastened by an attachable and detachable pin, a, that is entered into a socket, 1), suitable to receive it, of the sides of the car-truck. This chain-andpin connection between the car body and truck which is at either side thereof, when the several holding-pins u are inserted in their respective sockets of the truck, each chain being of a suitable length thereof, holds the carbody from upsetting in the direction of either of its sides.
Removing a holding-pin, a, at either side of the car-truck sets the car-body free to be upset only in a direction toward the side thereof which is opposite to the side having the chain-holding pin so released, and to the so upsetting of the ear-body the other attached and connected chains L offer no obstruction.
The standard J, to which the car-body is hung by metal loops G H, and which is secured in its receiving-socket K of the cartruck by horizontal cross rods 70, as described, (two bolts being preferable) has a series of receiving-holes, at, through it for said bolts, placed at different heights, and thus the carbody can be adjusted and fixed as toits height relative to its support as may be desired or required for the best and most convenient dumping of different materials with which the car may be loadedas, for instance, gravel, clay, 81c. \Vhen this adjustment of the carbody as to height is made, the chain-connections L of the car-body must be adjusted accordingly, and this can be accomplished in the arrangements thereof shown by turning the screw-eyes 1', connecting them to the can body, into or out of said body, as the case may require, turning them in shortening and turning them out lengthening to that extent the chains L. These screw-eyes 1' preferably screw into screw-nuts \V,set in the wood-work of the bottom of the car-body.
Again, other forms of flexible connection between the car-body at each side thereof and its truck maybe used in lieu of the chain-connection described as, for instance, a rope; and the sides of the body may be arranged for being opened and closed in other ways than the way particularly described and shownas, for instance, to slide up and down in suit able guideways of the corner-posts F. Other fastenings for the sides of the caebody may be used in place of the swinging buttonsfdescribed.
A dumping-car having in substance all the features of construction and arrangement of parts herein described contains obvious advantages, and plainly is most efficient, prac tical, and useful.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. A dumping-car having a body with four opening and closing sides, and supported upon the truck or other suitable support of the car only at its center, and to be tilted thereon in the direction of either its said four opening and closing sides, in combination with means, substantially as described, to fasten and hold the body at each of its sides against accidental tipping, and released on either side to permit the body to be tipped only in the direction of the side opposite thereto, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. A dumping-car having a body with one or more opening and closing sides, attached to the truck or suitable support of the car, to be tilted thereon in the direction of either of its said opening and closing sides, and said support for the body constructed and arranged to be adjusted vertically independently of the tilting of the body, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. A dumping-car having opposite sides of its body adapted to be opened and closed, in combination with fastenings applied to each of said opening and closing sides, and carried by a common operating-rod arranged for the fastening of eitherof the so opening and closing sides, to be operated through its said rod at the side of the car directly opposite to such fastening, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
4. Adumping-car having a body with three or more opening and closing si dcs, E, and centrally suspended by a vertical loop or eye, G, from a vertical loop or eye, H, of the truck or other suitable support of the car, so that itcan only upset in directions or lines practically at right angles to each other, and is incapable of rotation upon its said support, in combination with devices adapted to fasten the body against accidental upsetting, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
5. The dumping-car having one or more of the sides of the body adapted to be opened and closed, and the body attached to a standard, J, to be upset in the direction of eitherof its opening and closing sides, which standard is provided with aseries of holes, an, arranged in a vertical socket, K, of the truck or other body support of the car, in combination with rods 7r,which pass loosely through the holes on of said standard and the holes lot the walls of said socket, and are secured in place, substantially as describedd'or the purpose specified.
6. A dumping-car having opposite sides adapted to be opened and closed, in combina tion with button-fastenings f for each of said its so adjusted height, in combination with opposite sides, attached to a common operatflexible connections between the sides of the ing-rod, h, turning in suitable bearings of the body and its support or truck, adapted to be I 5 car-body, substantially as described, for the lengthened and shortened, substantially as de- 5 purpose specified. scribed, for the purpose specified.
