UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DARIUS O. RICE AND JEROME ROSSMAN, OF ONTARIO, INDIANA.
HORSE-COLLAR PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,735, dated August 4, 1885 Application tiled May 28, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DARIUS O.RIOE and J E- ROME ROSSMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Ontario, in the county of La Grange and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar Pads; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the ac Bompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawingsis a-rcpresentation ot'this invention, and shows the upper part of a horse-collar to which the pad is attached. The pad is in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionof the collarpad.
This invention is designed to prevent. undue friction ontheshouldersaml neck of thehorse; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement ofdevicrsas herei nafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the upper portion of a collar, and E the upper ends of the hames.
0 indicates the pad-bridge or upper section of the pad. This consists of atransverse saddle-shaped casting, having secured to its cen tral portion the ball-bearing D,which extends downward. To the sides of the upper section are attached the upper ends of the harnes- F represents the lower section of the pad, which is also a saddleshaped piece of metal, having an upwardly-extending boss or rise,G, which is hollowed out to form a socket-bearing, H, adapted to receive the ball-bearing of the upper section.
K is a cap-plate having an opening at Lfor (No model.)
the neck of the ball-bearing, and adapted to lar or hames bearing, which, when it is rev ceived on the neck of the horse, wears the hair off and causes sores. By the present invention this vibratory rocking movementis communicated to the upper section, 0, the lower section carrying the soft pad resting upon the neck of the horse, and by virtue of the ball-and-socket connection is allowed to take the natural movement of thehorses neck withoutundue friction.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A collar-pad having an upper section adapted to be connected tothe collarorhames, and a lower section carrying the soft pad, and connected to the upper section by ball-andsocket joint, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the collar-bridge having a ball-bearing, of the lower casting having a socket-b0ss and cap-plate, and adapted to receive the soft pad, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signa tn res in presence of two witnesses.
DARIUS 0. RICE.
JEROME ROSSMAN. Witnesses:
J. W. MANN,
LEsLIE KINGSBURY.
