Description

Feb. 22, 1966 N. N. LAY 3,235,889
BASSINET Filed June 16, 1964 United States Patent 3,235,889 BASSINET Nelda N. Lay, 4919 A. Schollmeyer, St. Louis, Mo. Filed June 16, 1964, Ser. No. 375,435 3 Claims. (Cl. 597) This invention relates to bassinets and more particularly to an improved bassinet for babies.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved bassinet which will be made of clear plastic material to allow the baby to see around him and also allow the mother or other attendant to see the baby without having to look down into the bassinet.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved bassinet which will have a plurality of colorful designs on the clear plastic body to provide interest for the baby as well as providing decoration to the bassinet.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a collapsible handle for the bassinet which will fold out of the way when not in use.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide an improved bassinet which may be used on a smaller scale as a childs toy for use with dolls in a play nursery.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved bassinet bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in operation and use.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of the present invention shown in elevation;
FIGURE 2 is a cross sectional view taken along the lines 22 of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary enlarged plan view of the handle member shown removed from FIGURE 1.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, an improved bassinet made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a cylindrical body 12 made of plastic material having a circular upper rim 14 made of hard plastic. Clear plastic body 12 is fixedly secured to a circular base 16 of aluminum and a plurality of spaced apart tubular legs 18 are hingeably secured to base 16 by a plurality of hinges 20. A plurality of folding braces 22 are secured to the upper extremities of legs 18 at one end and to base 16 at their other ends. This will avoid strain or overspreading of the legs 18 when weight is placed upon base 16. A caster 24 is received within the lower extremity of each of legs 18 and provides a means for easy moving of bassinet 10 along the floor. A pair of handle members 26 having a projecting pivot 28 are freely and rotatably received within base 16 and a flexible tube is telescopingly received over handle members 26 and provides handle grip means for carrying the bassinet 10. An elastic cord is received within flexible tube 30 and handle members 26, and is fixedly secured to the ends of handle members 26 and is received within base 16. A coil spring 34 is secured to each end of elastic cords 32 and provides a means for closing flexible tube 30 around the outer periphery of base 16. A pair ice of spaced apart lips 36 projecting from one side of rim 14 receives flexible tube 30 and thus stabilize body 12 when it is being carried. A lip 38 extends from base 16 and provides support means for flexible tube 30 when it is at rest around the outer periphery.
In use, the baby is placed into the clear plastic body 12 in the well known manner. The baby is able to see through the plastic body and he may be seen by an attendant without their having to come over and look down into the bassinet. When it is desired to lift bassinet 10, the flexible tube 30 is grasped and pulled, thus allowing it to be pulled away from handle members 26 so that it will clear the hard plastic rim 14 of body 12. When flexible tube 30 and its associated telescoping handle members 26 are pivoted upward, flexible tube 30 is urged between the lips 36 which will thus stabilize body 12. Legs 18 are folded beneath base 16 in the well known manner by collapsing the folding braces 22 and bassinet 10 will be collapsed into a compact package for carrying. Tube 30, when desired, is pulled out of between the lips 36 of rim 14 and is pointed downward until it rests upon lips 38 on base 16.
It shall be recognized that the handle may be made in various forms to collapse alongside the bassinet.
It shall further be noted that in miniature form bassinet 10 may be used for childrens dolls in a play nursery.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An improved bassinet comprising in combination, a cylindrical body of clear plastic providing a means for the baby to see out and for the babys attendant to see the baby, a flexible tube carried by said bassinet providing handle grip means for said bassinet, a circular aluminum base carried by said body of said bassinet providing pivot means for arcuate tubular members and elastic cord and coil spring means carried by said base providing telescoping means for said handle when not in use and a plurality of spaced apart tubular legs carried by said base providing support means for said body of said bassinet, said elastic cord and said coil spring being contained within said flexible tube, said clear plastic body being provided with an annular hard plastic rim at its uppermost extremity, said rim being secured to the upper edge of said bassinet and being provided with a pair of lips, said lips in combination with said flexible tube providing stability of said bassinet when it is carried, said flexible tube comprising the handle for carrying said bassinet being received between said lips which are parallel to each other and projecting from said plastic rim of said bassinet, said flexible tube being urged upward against the tension of said coil spring within said flexible tube in order to be received with said lips, said elastic cord within said flexible tube and said tubular handle member providing a means for returning said handle to the outer periphery of said base of said bassinet by being elastic so as to telescope said tubular handles within said flexible handle allowing said flexible handle member to fit snugly around said base.
2. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said 3 tubular members in the ends of said handle members which are arcuate in configuration are secured adjacent the projection extending from said arcuate handle members and said pivot is received freely Within an opening through said base of said bassinet.
3. The combination according to claim 2 wherein said handle members flexible tube telescopingly received over said handle members is supported by lip means extending from the outer periphery and thus prevents said handle comprising said flexible arcuate handle members from descending downward upon said legs of said bassinet.
