UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
W. G. COOK, OF APPLETON, WISCONSIN.
BED-SPRING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,352, dated May 21, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WV. C. COOK, of Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Spring; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a plan view of my improved spring bed bottom. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section through Fig. 1, in the vertical plane indicated by red line 00, m. Fig. 3, is a perspective View of one of the spring loops and coupling links used to form the bed bottom.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the three figures.
This invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of spring wire loops connected together in chains by wire links, said chains being connected to a rectangular frame by spring eyes and wedge pins, all as will be hereinafter fully explained.
The object of my invention is to obtain a good elastic bed bottom which will be very light and strong, and which will not be expensive to manufacture.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In theaccompanying drawings A. repre sents the right angular frame within which my improved system of springs are arranged. These springs are all combined and arranged in chains of a suitable length to which chains are secured in rows parallel to each other to the head and foot rails of the frame A. as will be hereinafter fully explained. The chains referred to consist of links and loops;
the links a, are each bent in the manner represented in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, there being two parallel arms a, a, and a curved transverse portion 6, which is curved inward or toward the ends ofthe portions (4, a; the ends of these straight portions a, a, have eyes 0, 0, formed on them. The loops (Z, are formed in the middle of pieces of wire of a suitable length, as shown in Figs. land 2, of the drawings; When the loop is formed the straight portions of the wire are bent so as to form the two acute angles 6, e, the ends of the wire are then formed into eyes 6, e, which are connected to the eyes 0,0, of the links. In this manner each looped portion has a link attached to it, and these links serve as eyes to receive thehooked loops cl, as shown in Fig. 3, of the drawings. The chains are thus made up alternately of loops and-links the links serving to connect the ends of one loop with the angles of another loop through the entire chain;
IV hen the links and loops are put together in suitable lengths to extend nearly from end to end of the frame A. inside thereof, the eyes 9, g, g, g, are attached to the angles of the loops or to the ends of the links as the case may be at the ends of the chains and these bent portions 5/, g, are passed through holes through the end rails of frame A. and the wedges It, h, h, It, are used to stretch the chains tight and to keep them under the proper tension, the wedges being driven into the eyes g, 9, outside of the rails stretch the chains tight and keep all the loops (Z, (Z, (Z, in an inclined position, all inclining in one direction, as shown in Fig. 2.
The looped portions as well as the links and eyes 9, g, are made of stiff spring wire of a suitable thickness and elasticity and when the chains are all secured at their ends to the frame A. in lines parallel to each other the loops (Z, cl, (Z, form the springs and on the ends of these loops the mattress rests.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Constructing the bed springs of loops (Z, and links a, a, 6, formed of wire and connected together as herein described and shown.
