United States Patent 3,229,307 GOLF GLOVES Alfred R. Jamison, Vienna, Va., assignor of one-half to George A. Tew, Washington, D.C. Filed May 12, 1964, Ser. No. 366,694 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-162) This invention relates to gloves and is directed more particularly to so-called golf gloves, that is, gloves normally worn by golfers on the hand which usually mainly grips the grip of a golf club, this being the left hand of a. right handed golfer and vice versa with a left handed golfer.

The main object of the invention is to construct such a golf glove provided with relatively wide elastic inserts, one secured to and disposed across the front upper portion of the glove, while a second relatively wide elastic insert is secured to and disposed across the upper rear of the glove, the respective elastic inserts being transversely offset, one with respect to the other, to produce a definite pull longitudinally of the glove which produces a tight fit of the glove on the hand and prevents the wrinkling or bunching of the glove along the palm and rear faces, which wrinkling is a common trouble with known golf gloves.

A further object of the invention is to construct a golf glove which is free from snaps, buttons or other type fasteners, and being provided with a V-notch at the rear side adjacent the wrist portion, thereby providing extreme ease in putting on and removing the glove from the hand.

Another object of the invention is to provide a golf glove including substantial front side and rear side elastic inserts which retain their elasticity, said elastic inserts being disposed in transverse offset relation longitudinally of the glove with respect to each other said inserts terminating at their respective ends at the side seams of the glove, whereby to produce a definite pull throughout the entire longitudinal length of the glove, the pull being quite pronounced adjacent the entire wrist portion.

A further object of the invention provides means, because of the transverse disposition of the elastic inserts and their termination adjacent the side seams of the glove, producing a pull adjacent the respective terminal ends of the elastic inserts inducing a pull of the front and rear faces of the glove to thereby provide an extremely well fitting glove devoid of the usual wrinkling or bunching of the glove adjacent the palm and back side of the glove.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following detailed description in which:

FIGURE 1 is a rear view of the glove shown fitted to the hand;

FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal side view looking at the glove from the left side of the same on the wearers hand;

FIGURE 3 is a longitudinal side view looking at the glove from the right side of the same fitted to the wearers hand;

FIGURE 4 is a partial view of the rear side of the glove seen with the hand turned at a slight angle from the horizontal; and

FIGURE 5 is a section on line 5-5 of FIGURE 2.

Referring to the drawings in which like numerals have been used to designate similar parts throughout the various views, the golf glove is provided with a front or palm portion 6, a rear or back portion 7, the palm and rear of the glove terminating in the usual finger portions 8. The back of the glove 7 and the rear of the finger portions are provided with a plurality of breather openings 9, all of which are normal in known golf gloves.

The glove terminates in an upper wrist portion 10, which portion of the glove generally encircles the wrist of the hand. The upper wrist engaging part 10 of the glove 3,229,397 Patented Jan.- 18, 1966 ice is provided midway of the rear portion thereof with a substantial V-notch 11, said notch permitting the easy removal and putting on of the glove. In other words the glove is not provided with any of the usual snap fasteners or buttons which must normally be released before the glove can be taken oif or put on the hand.

Across the back of the glove, and positioned at a point which would normally contact the upper portion of the back of the hand, somewhat below the juncture of the hand and Wrist, is sewed to the back of the glove a relatively wide elastic insert 12. This elastic insert 12 terminates at one of its ends at the left side seam 13 of the glove and at its other side at the right side seam 14 of the glove, the left side of the glove being considered the side adjacent the thumb.

The palm 6 of the glove terminates at its upper portion in a wrist engaging part as seen at 15. Closely adjacent the upper edge of this wrist portion 15, the same has sewed thereto a relatively wide elastic web or insert 16, similar to the rear elastic web or insert 12. It will be noted that the elastic insert 16 is positioned transversely of the wrist portion 15 of the glove and disposed quite close to the upper edge of the portion 15. The opposite ends 17 and 18 of the elastic insert terminate at the respective left and

right side seams

13 and 14. The front and rear elastic inserts 16 and 12 respectively, it will be noted, are disposed in slightly different transverse planes of the longitudinal axis of the glove. That is, the two inserts 16 and 12 are offset in a transverse plane of the glove, each insert terminating at its respective ends at the

side seams

13 and 14. Such disposition of the elastic webs or inserts produces a pull at the respective sides of the glove indicated at 19 and 20. This pull at the opposite sides of the glove tends to cause both the rear and palm portions of the glove to snugly engage both the rear and palm portions of the hand to cause the glove to snugly engage both the back and front parts of the hand and Wrist when the same is positioned onthe hand, and consequently eliminates the usual loose or bunching portions of known gloves with respect to the palm, front and rear or back parts thereof. This is an extremely desirable improvement in golf gloves where it is important that such gloves fit the hand in an always snug manner. Such a fit produces far better feel of the club by the golfer which is necessary and desirable.

The glove when not positioned on the hand of the wearer has at least the major portion of the rear elastic insert 12 positioned above at least the major portion of the elastic insert 16. From a close examination of FIGURES 2 and 3, which disclose the glove positioned on the hand of the wearer, it will be noted that the front and back elastic inserts 16 and 12 are expanded and positioned in overlapping relation with respect to each other, longitudinally of the glove. Thus, an imaginary line drawn transversely through the glove from front to rear shows the elastic inserts overlapping one another, which overlapping relation produces the desired pull of the front or palm portion and the rear or back portion of the glove and produces the snug fit around the wrist of the wearer.

It is universally true that golf gloves as now made, because of the lack of a snug fit, tend to stretch and bunch at the palm, front and rear of the glove and are for that reason soon discarded. With the present improvement, when the elastic inserts are of substantial width, the respective inserts being offset with respect to each other and having their ends terminate at the side seams, produces a pull of the front and back of the glove to enhance a tight or snug fit at all times. Further, the glove is provided with a cut away V at the back wrist portion so that the same can be easily and readily put on and removed with ease and facility. This is important due to the fact that in recent times so many golfers remove the glove during the putting stroke on the green. Again the glove has no snaps, buttons or other type fasteners which makes for much cheaper manufacture and sale of the glove.

The invention is illustrated in a preferred form of the invention, and it is not intended that the invention is limited to the exact construction shown, but is capable of variation and modification within the scope of the following claim.

I claim:

A golf glove comprising a palm portion, back portion and finger portions, said palm portion extending downwardly to provide a wrist portion, said wrist portion having a first relatively wide elastic insert sewed thereto and disposed transversely across the major portion thereof, said back portion having a second relatively wide elastic insert sewed thereto and disposed across the major portion thereof, at least the major portion of said elastic insert sewed to said back portion being positioned above at least the major portion of said elastic insert sewed to said wrist portion, and when said glove is positioned on the hand of the wearer, portions of each said elastic insert being in longitudinal overlapping relation whereby said inserts secured to said back and wrist portions will exert a transverse force and resist an upward pull on both said back and palm portions of said glove to provide a snug fit.
