TUMBLING BARREL. No. 322,621. Patented July 21, 1885.

NITED STATES DAVID MOOANOE, OF NEWARK, NEWV JERSEY.
TUMBLlNG-BARREL;
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,621, dated July 21, 1885.
Application filed May 38, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, DAVID MGOANOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tumbling-Barrels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
' and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a tumbling-barrel of greater durability and efficiency; and it consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the figures, Figure l is afront elevation of the machine with door open; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same, taken through line at; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of aportion of the barrel; and Fig. 4 is a viewshowing, on an enlarged scale, the construction of the side pieces.
In carrying out the invention I construct and arrange the barrel in any usual manner, with the exception that I form the side pieces,
a, of double thicknesses of wood, the inner thickness or lining,b,being composed of blocks or plates having the grain run at an angle to the longitudinal outer pieces, 0, or in a radial direction as respects the pivotal center of said barrel, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4. By this construction the interior surfaces of the barrel are prevented from splintering under the influence of the tumbling metal, and thedurability of the barrel is thus greatly increasedwithout materially adding to the cost of constructing said barrels. NVhen the lining becomes worn, it may be readily renewed by dissolving the paste or glue that causes the lining to adhere to the side 0, removing the worn lining and substituting a new one, the substitution involving but little expense.
In practical use the emery used in tumbling wvorks itself into the grain of the wood, be-
cause of its peculiar arrangement, producing a polishing surface peculiarly effective in cleaning and burnishing the castings.
Having thus described. my invention,what I claim as new is- 1. The improved tumbling-barrel herein described, having the sides thereof provided with wooden plates or blocks, the grain of which runs or lies radially as respects the pivotal center of said barrel.
2. In a tumbling-barrel, the combination of the longitudinal outer pieces and wooden lining pieces arranged with the grain thereof running approximately at a right angle to said longitudinal pieces, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of May, 188i.
DAVID MOOANOE.
