United States Patent 3,224,572 SHOE POLISH KIT Carl E. Meyerhoefer, Little Neck, N.Y., assignor to Knomark, Inc., Brooklyn, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed June 27, 1963, Ser. No. 291,181 4 Claims. (Cl. 206-47) This invention relates to a shoe polish kit which comprises a compartmental container for a paste, a dauber and a polishing cloth.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a compartmental container including a paste cup that is so shaped that the paste therein will be prevented from rotating when the dauber is turned in contact with the paste to pick up a usable portion of the same.
It is a further object to so construct the cup that the inner wall surface thereof will be wiped clean as. the dauber is rotated and so that the dauber will be freed of substantially all of the excess paste before it is withdrawn for use.
Furthermore the dauber is of an oval configuration which makes it possible to deposit polish in a relatively difficult location, such as between the last and the sole of a shoe.
Additionally, the invention seeks to so form the containers that they conveniently may be stacked for shipping and for display purposes.
Finally, it is an object of the invention to so construct the container that it easily may be handled and its component parts used in such manner that the hands of the user will not become soiled.
In the drawings, which illustrate one form of the invention:

FIGURE 3 is a horizontal sectional view from line 3-3 of FIGURE 2 looking in the direction of the arrows and with parts broken away to show a top edge portion of the paste cup and a portion of the top surface of a paste supply therein; and
FIGURE 4 is a horizontal section on the line 44 of FIG. 2, showing distribution of portions of the paste mass in bottom portions of the paste cup.
With the above stated and other objects, which will become apparent as this description progresses, the invention resides in the combination and arrangements of elements recited in the claims and all equivalents thereof, it being understood that the form of the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings is but one exemplification of the invention, and the claims are not to be limited thereby.
The embodiment comprises, broadly speaking, a shoe paste container or cup, a cover therefor, a dauber comprising a can-like hand hold, a sponge-like dauber attached thereto and a paste sealant.
Before being put into use the paste cup is sealed to prevent the volatilization of the paste solvent and to perform a second function of supporting the dauber with its sponge-like element out of contact with the paste.
The paste container or cup 1, FIGS. 3 and 4, is noncircular, preferably an elliptical hollow cylinder open at one end, which provides a compartment for the paste and may be formed of metal or any other suitable material having sufficient rigidity to assume and maintain its form. The outer or peripheral or side wall of cup 1 is provided with a circumferential stop bead 2 which may be continuous or interrupted and the bottom wall of said cup, FIG. 2, provides an inwardly extending pocket 19 of substantially elliptical peripheral contour.
A sealing bead 3 circumscribes cup 1 in spaced relation to and above the stop bead 2. This sealing bead 3 is continuous and protrudes outwardly beyond normal outer or peripheral surface portions 8 of the peripheral wall of cup 1 to slightly lesser extent than the stop bead 2. A cover 4 open at one end and with its side wall of the noncircular cylindrical or substantially elliptical form of cup 1 is dimensioned to telescope over the open end portion of said cup at 5 and the lower edge said cover is adapted to contact the bead 2 at 6 to limit the telescopic movement referred to.
For the cover 4 to sealingly engage cup 1 and thereby, in effect, provide a closed unit before and during use, the length of the inside peripheral face of the cover 4 where it embraces the outer face of the head 3 is such that it will have a snug frictional contact with that face to create a seal against evaporation of the paste solvent.
The upper edge of the peripheral or side wall of paste cup 1 is rolled inwardly at 7 in the conventional manner and the circumferential lengths of the outside peripheral face portion, as 8, of the paste container and of the outside peripheral face of the rolled over bead 7 respectively are less than the circumferential length of the inside face of the cover 4 so that the cover and the paste cup have no contact with each other at these locations 7 and 8, the maintaining of the cover in closing position on cup 1 being entirely by friction between the bead 3 and the inside face of the cover.
A sponge-like dauber 9 which is preferably resilient and, therefore, may be compressed and will expand from compressed condition because of its inherent qualities is attached to the lower face 10 of a hand hold 11 which has a compartment 12 therein open at the top at 13. This element 11 serves as a hand hold for the dauber and also as a receptacle for a removable polishing cloth or buffer, not shown. In order to protect the paste supply, as 21, within cup 1 and to entirely isolate the dauber 9 from the paste, a paste sealer, as an impermeable protective membrane 15 closes the upper end of the paste container and is sealed to the upper edge surface of the rolled-in bead 7 on the peripheral wall of cup 1.
In use the protective membrane is removed and the dauber pushed downwardly into contact with the upper face of the paste through the implementation of the hand hold 11 which may be cylindrical in form.
Since the mere contact between the dauber and the paste may not cause sufficient of the paste to adhere to the dauber, means is provided for permitting the dauber to be rotated partially or completely while in contact with the face of the paste and which will prevent any rotative movement of the paste block itself.
For this purpose, the outside peripheral face 16 of the dauber 9 is substantially elliptical in form and arranged on the same axis as that of the side wall of cup 1. However, as seen in FIG. 3, the minor axial dimension of said dauber is less than that of the inner face of cup 1 and of bead 7. The result of these relative dimensions is that spaces 17 exist between portions of the outer face of the dauber and opposed portions of the inner face of cup 1 and of the head 7. Thus contact between portions of the bead 7 and of the dauber is established, when the dauber is pushed down into engagement with the paste, be tween the points 18 and 18 and 18 and 18"; and when the dauber is rotated these areas of contact will progress around the ellipse, thus facilitating removal from the dauber of excess paste when the dauber is withdrawn.
It will be realized from: the foregoing description that the length of the peripheral face of dauber 9 is less than that of the inner face of the peripheral wall of cup 1, FIG. 3. However, the long or major axial dimension of the elliptical dauber is equal to or slightly greater than the corresponding inside dimension of cup 1. This arrangement has several advantages. When the dauber is rotated in contact with the paste and withdrawn, the inner face of the side wall of cup 1, which is above the paste level will be cleaned and the excess paste will be removed from the dauber. In addition to this, the paste mass will be held firmly in position in cup 1 and will not rotate with rotation of the dauber, and the dauber will during non-use be held firmly in position and against rotation.
To facilitate the display and also the shipment of the kit the upper end of the cover 4 is provided with an outwardly extending boss which is of such contour and dimensions that it snugly will fit into the pocket 19. Thus, the kits may be stacked one above the other with the boss portion of one kit nested in the pocket portion 19 of a superposed kit and will maintain their stacked relationship. In other words, they will not rotate one in relation to another. While cup 1 is preferably of the elliptical form that is illustrated in the drawing, it is to be understood that it may be of other hollow noncircular cylindrical forms.
What is claimed is:
1. A shoe polish kit comprising in combination a paste receiving cup open at one end to permit access to a supply of paste therein, said paste conforming substantially to the shape of the cup, said cup having a bottom wall opposite said open end and a cylindrical side wall of elliptical horizontal sectional contour provided with an inturned bead extending around said open end of the cup, said bottom wall of the cup having means anchoring said paste thereto, a paste applicator having a side wall and a bottom wall with a dauber secured to said bottom wall, said paste applicator including a hand hold, said dauber being of resilient material and of elliptical horizontal sectional contour and shaped and dimensioned to be extendable in use through said open end of the cup, a cup cover having an open end telescopically positioned over the applicator and securely engaging said cup, the major axial dimension of the elliptical dauber being at least as great as that of the interior circumference of the side wall of said cup and the minor axial dimension of said elliptical dauber being less than that of said interior circumference of the side wall of said cup, whereby when the dauber is rotated in use in operative contact with the paste supply, in said cup, inner face portions of the side wall of the cup which are above the paste level therein will be wiped clean by the dauber, while the paste supply is held firmly in position against rotation in the cup, and when the dauber is withdrawn from contact with the paste supply, excess paste thereon will be removed by said inturned bead edge of the cup.
2. A shoe polish kit as defined in claim 1 and wherein the bottom wall of the cup is provided with an inwardly extending pocket peripherally spaced inwardly from the side wall of the cup defined by a side wall of elliptically shaped peripheral contour.
3. A shoe polish kit as defined in claim 1 wherein the side wall of the cup is provided with an outwardly extending continuous bead arranged and adapted for sealing engagement with interior surface portions of the cover, and an outwardly extending stop bead positioned and adapted to be engaged by edge portions of said open end of the cover to fix the operative closing position of said cover while the latter is in operative sealing engagement with the sealing bead.
4. A shoe polish kit as defined in claim 1 and wherein a membrane of material adapted to inhibit volatilization of solvent in the paste is removably secured in cup sealing position between under face portions of the dauber and top portions of said inwardly rolled bead edge of the peripheral wall of the cup.

Claims (1)

1. A SHOE POLISH KIT COMPRISING IN COMBINATION A PASTE RECEIVING CUP OPEN AT ONE END TO PERMIT ACCESS TO A SUPPLY OF PASTE THEREIN, SAID PASTE CONFORMING SUBSTANTIALLY TO THE SHAPE OF THE CUP, SAID CUP HAVING A BOTTOM WALL OPPOSITE SAID OPEN END AND A CYLINDRICAL SIDE WALL OF ELLIPTICAL HORIZONTAL SECTIONAL CONTOUR PROVIDED WITH AN INTURNED BEAD EXTENDING AROUND SAID OPEN END OF THE CUP, SAID BOTTOM WALL OF THE CUP HAVING MEANS ANCHORING SAID PASTE THERETO, A PASTE APPLICATOR HAVING A SIDE WALL AND A BOTTOM WALL WITH A DAUBER SECURED TO SAID BOTTOM WALL, SAID PASTE APPLICATOR INCLUDING A HAND HOLD, SAID DAUBER BEING OF RESILIENT MATERIAL AND OF ELLIPTICAL HORIZONTAL SECTIONAL CONTOUR AND SHAPED AND DIMENSIONED TO BE EXTENDABLE IN USE THROUGH SAID OPEN END OF THE CUP, A CUP COVER HAVING AN OPEN END TELESCOPICALLY POSITIONED OVER THE APPLICATOR AND SECURELY ENGAGING SAID CUP, THE MAJOR AXIAL DIMENSION OF THE ELLIPTICAL DAUBER BEING AT LEAST AS GREAT AS THAT OF THE INTERIOR CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE SIDE WALL OF SAID CUP AND THE MINOR AXIAL DIMENSION OF SAID ELLIPTICAL DAUBER BEING LESS THAN THAT OF SAID INTERIOR CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE SIDE WALL OF SAID CUP, WHEREBY WHEN THE DAUBER IS ROTATED IN USE IN OPERATIVE CONTACT WITH THE PASTE SUPPLY, IN SAID CUP, INNER FACE PORTIONS OF THE SIDE WALL OF THE CUP WHICH ARE ABOVE THE PASTE LEVEL THEREIN WILL BE WIPED CLEAN BY THE DAUBER, WHILE THE PLASTE SUPPLY IS HELD FIRMLY IN POSITION AGAINST ROTATION IN THE CUP, AND WHEN THE DAUBER IS WITHDRAWN FROM CONTACT WITH THE PASTE SUPPLY, EXCESS PASTE THEREON WILL BE REMOVED BY SAID INTURNED BEAD EDGE OF THE CUP.
