SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,251, dated July 14, 1885.
Application filed March 16, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SoLoN BRYANT, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a perspective view of one-half the corset; Fig. 2, avertical central section showing the overlying band as stitched to the body through the stays thereof.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class ofcorsets in which the sides are cut away over the hips. These corsets have been made with a band following the curve from the front up over the hips, and thence down to the back, the band corded or stayed in lines parallel with the lower edge of the The bones of the body of the corset extend down to the edge of the band, thus making a joint in the body of the corset at the upper edge of the band. The stopping of the vertical stays at the edge of the band makes a break at that edge of the band, which permits the band to turn up and soon break out of shape, not only to the discomfort of the wearer, but so as to detract materially from the set of the corset.
The object of my invention is to avoid this break in the corset and tendency to get out of shape; and it consists in constructing the lower edge of each side of the corset of S shape from the front up over the hips, and extending the stays in the body of the corset to the lower edge, combined with an un-- stayed band of like S shape laid upon the body of the corset from the lower edge upward, and so as to lie upon the stayed portion of the body of the corset, the said band stitched to the body of the corset, as more fully hereinafter described.
The corset may be cut in any of the usual shapes, except at the lower edge, where it is cut in S shape, starting from the front at a,
thence curved upward to the commencement of the hip-joint, then by a reverse curve to the back section, as at b, so that the lower edge of the corset from the front to the back section, b, is of S shape. In the body of the corset the stays run down to the lower edge in the usual manner, as seen in Fig. 2, (1 representing the stay, e the inner thickness, and f the outer thickness.
A is the band, which is cut in S shape, corresponding to the lower edge of the corset, and in width so as to extend up onto the body of thecorset. This band is laid upon the outside of the stayed body of the corset at the lower edge, and stitched thereto by several lines of stitches, as indicated in Fig, 1.
The stays in the body of the corset extend downward, so as to prevent the lower edge from turning or working upward. The band out into the shape of the lower edge of the corset and stitched thereon over the stays serves not only to hold them in place, but to stay the corset and give to the front an inward rounding curvature, so as to readily conform to the shape of the body. This band strengthens the corset from the front over the hip, and gives to it all the advantages of conliability of the break which unavoidably occurs between the stayed band and the stayed body of the corset.
I claim' A corset having the lower edge cut away over the hips, producing a curve of S shape from the front up over the hips to the rear, the body constructed with bones or stays sub stantially vertical, extending to the said lower S-shaped edge of the corset, combined with a band out in S shape, corresponding to the shape of the lower edge of the corset, extending from the front up over the hip and reartour due to the corded band, but without the ward, overlying the lower stayed portion of 0 the corset, and stitched thereto, substantially as described.
SOLON BRYANT.
