Be it known tl1at I, DAVID J.Sr11vnnsorr a oitizen of the Unitecl States, rosiding ab Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented an Improved A11- to1natio Oar-Couplor, of which the followin'g is a speoification.
My invention relaies to improvements in conplers for railroad-cars; ancl the objeets I have in view are to provide an automatie compler tl1at sl1all loe simple and inexpensive in construction, effioient in Operation, ancl adapte(l for conpling witl1. any ordinary coupler or witl1 anotl1or of the same kin(l.

Il1is draw l1ead oonsists, preferably, 01' a single casting, of substantially the shape shown, having in its top the longitudinal slot a, ancl I prefer 10 provide the head with the part A, that extencls over and above the slot a to proteot the bar G, hereinafter desoribecl. The headAis open at its forward end, and is provicled witl1 the oross-piece a, which is cast integral With the main bocly o1 the draw-head, lont leaving the openings a a in line With the inner Walls of the san1e. At its forward end the Walls 0f the draw-l1ead are beveled off, snbstantially as shown, 130 (lireot the coupling-link into the draw-head, and the front Wall of the crosspiece a is inclined, as shown, so that when the end of the link strikes tl1is Wall it will b e direoted towarcl the lower part o1 the drawhea.
B B represents a slide in the draw-head A, l1aving the inolined ends b b, against whieh the Iink strikes in coupling, and through whiol1 the moving parts 01 the coupler are operated. 'Il1e forward faees of the ends b b are of substantially the same inelination as the front wall of the cross-piece a, ancl when the slide is pushed in loy the links these ends (lireot the link to the lower part of the drawhead, and both the end of the link and the ends ot'tl1e slide are receivecl in the spaoe between the pin and the face of the oross-pieco a. Tl1e two parts of the slide extend tl1rough the openings a in the oross-pieoe a, and back of this eross-pieoe the slicle is provided wi1h vertical pieees b b, and with the bolts b b, whieh extend throngh slots a" a in the botton1 of the raW-hea(l and have seonred to them the crosspiece b A projection, b 011 the bottom of the draw-head has seenred to it a rod, b, surrounded by a spiral spring, ZP. The rod b* extends throngh the crosspiece IP, and the spring b bears tl1ereon a11cl tends to keop the slide in the position sl1own in Fig. 1.

In th is movement the parts b b of the slide strike the lugs 0 0 011 the projection C of bar C. The bar O is thereloy IOO 1noved back in the Same direetion, ibs beveled end c passing down along the inclined wa1l I7 bhe rear f the dmw-head and the inclined fiwe 0f projection G riding up the inclined i'aees 0f projeetions A A. This movement 0f bar C is against the tension 0f the springs D und D. As the rem end of the bar is depressed its forward end rises nnti1 it reaches substantiully the posibion shown in Fig. 3. The couplingpin C is carried up by tln's mwe1nent 0t' the bar, and the end 0f the link asses under the pin. As soon as the barhas been raised to substantially the point indicated by the dotted lines, the pieces b b pass under and disengage from the 1ngs c 0, and the springs D D bring the bar back to its former p0 sibion, with the coupling-pin passing through 1110 link and through an opening in the bottom 0f the draw-head. The parts b b of the slide are then 011 the opposite side of lugs c"c. Tl1e bottom ofthe dmw-head is also provided wibh the slot and a holt, E, is secured to the bar O, m1d passes through this s1ot. Bellerank levers F F are provided, one oneach side, and arranged in position t0 m0ve the holt E, and thereby the bar O. This move ment; 1's similzu t0 filmt given to the bar by the slide B when operated by the link, ehe rear end 0f fohe bar being dep 1essed and its forward end mised. As will be Seen, these 1e"ers may he used fo1 uncoupling. As soon as the bar C lms been moved so that the lugs c"are above lhe ends 0f tl1e pieces b Z) the spring b pushes the slide forwm-d und forces the link fron1 the dmw-heud. 3. 'Ihe combination,with the draw-head A. having inclined projections A A and inclined wall a, 0f the slide B, having pieces b b. spring Zfi, the bar O, having conplingpin (J und projections O, the 1ugs c c, and the springs D D, all substantially as described.
4. The eombinaion, with thc drzuv-hend A, of the bar C having pin C und projeetion C, the springs D D, the holt E, und the levers F, all substantially as described.
5. The combinationwith the drzuv-head A, having cross-piece a and openings F, the projecbions A, and the inch'ned Wall a", 0f the slide B B, having inelined ends b b und vertical pieces b b, Ehe spring b, the bar C, having inclined projection C, heveled end c, lugs c" c und the eonpling-pin O, all substantially as described.
