  • This invention relates in general to new and useful improvements in attachments for sewing machines, and more particularly relates to a novel device for sewing trimmings on a fabric stretched on a fabric bearing frame of a sewing machine particularly adapted to automatically execute shaped sewings.
  • the invention has the primary object of providing a device for holding a trimming in an exact position with respect to an associated fabric bearing frame and the fabric stretched thereon.
  • Another object of this invention is to provide a novel device for sewing trimmings to fabric utilizing a sewing machine which automatically executes shaped sewings, the device for sewing trimmings including an adjustable clamp positioned on a fabric bearing frame of the sewing machine, and the clamp being constructed to hold a trimming on the fabric stretched on the frame in the exact required position in order that the trimming may be sewed with the shaped sewing.
  • Another object of this invention is to provide a novel device for holding trimmings in place during the sewing thereof, with a sewing machine which automatically executes shaped sewing, the trimming holding device being of an extremely simple construction whereby it is relatively inexpensive and is economically feasible.
  • Another object of this invention is to provide a novel device for holding trimmings during the sewing thereof to fabrics utilizing a sewing machine which automatically executes the shaped sewings, the device being of a construction wherein the trimming may be quickly and easily positioned relative thereto to effect the accurate positioning of the trimming.
  • FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a sewing machine for executing shaped sewing and having a fabric bearing frame on which the trimming holding device of this invention is mounted.
  • FIGURE 2 is an enlarged plan view of the trimming holding device and shows specifically the details thereof.
  • FIGURE 3 is an end view of the trimming holding device, and shows in phantom lines an upper clamp plate thereof in a released position.
  • FIGURE 4 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line IV-IV of FIGURE 2, and shows the specific manner in which the trimming clamp of the device is mounted for swinging movement to an out-of-the-way position, the trimming clamp being shown in its out-of-the-way position by phantom lines.
  • a conventional sewing machine 1 which is mounted on a support 2 in a conventional manner.
  • the support 2 has associated therewith a traveling head 3 which, in turn, supports a fabric bearing frame 4 which is movable relative to a needle 5 of the sewing machine 1.
  • the traveling head 3 is mounted in a conventional manner (not shown) on the support 2 for automatic movement relative to the sewing machine 1 to effect a shaped sewing x, as is generally shown in FIGURES 1 and 2.
  • the means for mounting and moving the traveling head 3 are normally mounted beneath the support 2.
  • the des1gn of the shaped sewing x is particularly designed so as to be along the outline of a trimming a which is to be sewn on a fabric b stretched on the fabric bearing frame 4.

  • the fabric bearing frame 4 is formed of a rod 7 along which sleeves 9 are mounted for sliding movement, the sleeves 9 carrying setscrews 8 for effecting the fixing of the sleeves 9 in adjustableted positions along the rod 7.
  • the sleeves 9 carry clamps 10 for holding the fabric b.
  • the clamps 10 are rigidly connected to the sleeves 9 and each clamp 10 is formed by a fixed clamp member 11 which is shaped to define a U-shaped groove in which a clamp rod 12 is engageable for the purpose of clamping the fabric b within the U shaped groove.
  • Each clamp member 11 and its associated clamp rod 12 is hinged together at one end so that the rod 12 can enter the U-shaped groove in order to clamp the fabric b in the groove.
  • Elastic latches 13 are positioned at the free ends of the clamp rods 12 to ensure the closing of the clamps 10.
  • the fabric b is fastened on the fabric bearing frame 4 in a position so that the shaped sewing x is in an exact position at which the trimming a is to be sewn.
  • the fabric b is a shirt front and the trimming a is a pocket, already hemmed, that is to be sewn on the shirt front.
  • the trimming holding attachment In order to hold the trimming a in the exact position desired for the sewing thereof to the fabric 12, there is provided the trimming holding attachment of this invention, which is mounted on the fabric bearing frame 4.
  • the trimming holding attachment includes a sleeve 14 which is slidable on the rod 7 of the fabric bearing frame 4 and is provided with a setscrew 15 for holding the same in an adjusted position relative to the rod 7.
  • the sleeve 14 has rigidly connected thereto a blade 16 of a hinge, generally referred to by the numeral 17.
  • the hinge 17 has a second blade 18 which is provided with a pair of elongated slots 19 which extend generally perpendicular to the axis of the sleeve 14. Screws 20 pass through the slots 19 in the blade 18 and serve to secure a clamp, generally referred to by the numeral 21, to the hinge 17 in an adjusted position.
  • the blade 16 is provided on the underside thereof with spacers 22 to which there is connected a spring member 23 in the form of a resilient plate.
  • the spring member 23 presses against downwardly projecting tongues 24 of the blade 18 so as to normally hold the blade 18 in a position coplanar with the blade 16, while allowing the blade 18 and the clamp 21 carried thereby to be pivoted in the direction of the arrow y (FIGURE 4) so that the clamp 21 may be moved away from the fabric b.
  • the clamp 21 is formed by a plate 25 which is adapted to directly seat on the fabric b.
  • the plate 25 has a terminal profile 26 which is analogous to and included into the profile of the shaped sewing x.
  • a second plate 27 is hingedly mounted on the plate 25, and the plate 27 also has a profile 28 which is analogous to and included into the profile of the shaped sewing x.
  • the plate 27 normally overlies the plate 25 and serves to clamp the trimming a.
  • the plate 25 has rigidly secured thereto a spring member 29 in the form of an elongated resilient strip.
  • the spring member 29 is generally arcuate in vertical section and presses against an upstanding tongue 30 of the plate 27 so as to hold the plate 27 in a position for clamping a trimming a against the plate 25.
  • the plate 27 is provided with an opening immediately adjacent the tongue 30 through which the spring member 29 passes when the plate 27 is rotated in the direction of the arrow 2 (FIGURE 3) in order to open the clamp 21.
  • the upward movement of the clamp plate 27 to open the clamp 21 is facilitated by a finger grip 31 which is preferably struck from the plate 27.
  • the plate 25 is provided with a pair of upstanding tongues 32. Also, the plate 25 is provided adjacent the opposite edges thereof with projecting tongues 33 to facilitates the positioning of the trimming a.

  • the clamp 21 may be lowered onto the fabric b and the trimming area is positioned for the shaped sewing x to be carried out so that the trimming a may be accurately sewn to the fabric b.

  • a fabric holding frame for a sewing machine wherein said frame comprises means to clamp ingly hold a piece of fabric in stretched-out condition, and wherein said frame is movable to move said fabric relative to the sewing machine
  • the improvement comprising a trimming holding attachment supported on said frame, said attachment including a fabric trim clamp pivotably attached relative to said frame about a first axis parallel to the working plane of said fabric, said clamp being adapted to hold a fabric trimming in extended condition, said clamp including an edge portion defined by a profile which is analogous to and included within the profile of a desired trimming, said clamp comprising a clamping plate which is pivotable about a second axis which angularly disposed at a substantial angle relative to said first axis.
  • a fabric holding frame for a sewing machine wherein said frame comprises means to clampingly hold a piece of fabric in stretched-out condition, and wherein said frame is movable to move said fabric relative to the sewing machine, the improvement comprising a trimming holding attachment supported on said frame, said frame comprising an elongate rod and said attachment comprising a sleeve adjustably slidable along said rod, said attachment including a fabric trim clamp adapted to hold a fabric trimming in extended condition, said plate being pivotable about respective first and second axes towards and away from the working plane of said fabric, said axes being substantially perpendicular relative to each other.
