(Cl. 28212) This invention relates to cartons and, in particular, to a novel carton adapted to contain a Supply of manifolded business forms, to premit the successive withdrawal of the forms and to provide a writing surface to support the form next to be withdrawn so that information may be entered thereon while the form is still associated with the carton, the carton being formed from a one-piece blank which is cut, scored and folded so that it may be set up into the finished carton in a simple operation.
Manifolded business forms of many kinds are in very common use and in accordance with a large body of prior art, these machines are frequently stored, with-drawn and used in association with a relatively expensive, heavy and complicated mechanical device.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple, sturdy and economical cardboard carton which may contain a supply of manifolded business forms and from which the forms may be withdrawn and which may also serve as a writing surface so that information may be entered on the business forms while it is still associated with the carton.
In accordance with the present invention, a carton adapted to contain :a supply of manifolded, continuous business forms, to permit the successive withdrawal of the forms and to provide a writing surface to support the form next to be withdrawn so that information may be entered thereon while the form is still associated with the carton is set up from a one-piece blank cut, scored and folded to com-prise a bottom panel centrally located in the blank and integral with a series of three adjacent panels on each side thereof and separated therefrom by parallel scored fold lines, the three adjacent panels on one side comprising a first inner side wall panel, a writing sur face panel and a second inner side wall panel, the writing surface panel having a flap intergral therewith at each end and separated therefrom by scored fold lines at each end at right angles to the two inner side wall panels, the flaps being adapted to be folded over and glued onto the writing surface panel to reinforce it, the said three adjacent panels being adapted to be folded with each panel at right angles to each adjacent panel to form a rectangular enclosure over the bottom panel with the writing surface panel lying above the parallel to'the bottom panel, the supply of business forms being received in this enclosure, the three adjacent panels on the other side of the bottom panel comprising a first outer side wall panel adapted to be folded at right angles to the bottom panel and to lie against the outside of the second inner side wall panel, a top window pane] adapted to overlie the writing surface panel and to expose a major portion of the area of the writing surface panel through an aperture in the top window panel, and a second outer side wall panel adapted to lie against the outer surface of the first inner side wall panel, the second outer side wall panel having a pair of lock tabs engageable with slots in the fold line between the bottom panel and the first side wall panel, front end flap and tab means to close one end of the carton, a series of business form positioning flaps carried by the end of the bottom panel remote from the front end closure means and adapted to be folded upon itself and glued to the bottom panel to present a vertical transverse abutment wall to maintain the supply of business 3,214,194 Patented Oct. 26, 1965 ice forms forwardly of the rear edge of the writing surface panel, and a rear end closure cross tab carried by the corresponding end of each of the first inner said wall panel and the first outer side wall panel and a rear end closure fap carried by a corresponding end of the top window panel and adapted, together with the end closure cross tabs, to close the rear end of the carton, the manifolded business forms being led from a supply within the enclosure, over the rear edge of the writing surface panel and forwardly to the front edge of the carton between the writing surface panel and the top window panel.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated and in which like reference numerals denote like parts in the various views of which:

Referring now to the drawings and, in particular, to FIGURE 1 the blanks will be seen to comprise a bottom panel 10 centrally located in the blank and. integral with a series of three adjacent panels on each side. To the one side, the three adjacent panels comprise a first inner side wall panel 11 separated from bottom panel 10 by a fold line 12 in which cuts 13 and 14 have been made to provide slots, when the blank is folded along fold line 12 for a purpose which will subsequently become apparent.
Next adjacent inner side wall panel 11 is the writing surface panel 15 separated from the first inner side wall panel 11 by fold line 16 on the one side and, by fold line 17 on the other side, separated from the second inner side wall panel 18.
Fold lines 16 and 17 are provided with cuts 19 land 20 which will provide slots for a purpose subsequently to be described.
Before proceeding with a description of the remainder of the blank itself, it is well to note that the surface of the writing surface panel 15 is coated with an adhesive and that the writing surface panel, at each end, is provided with a flap integral therewith and bearing reference numerals 21 and 22. These flaps 21 and 22 are also coated with an adhesive and flap 21 is first folded over along fold line 23 to be adhered to the surface of the writing surface panel 15 after which panel 22 is folded over upon fold line 24 to be adhered, in part to writing surface panel 15 and, in part, to fiap 21.
The function of flaps 21 and 22 is to reinforce the writing surface panel 15.
It is also seen that apertures 25 and 26 are provided in writing surface panel 15 and in flap 22 for a purpose which will subsequently be described.
Having folded over and adhered the fiaps 21 and 22 to the writing surface panel 15, panel 11 may be folded along fold line 12 so that it lies at right angles to bottom panel 10, the writing surface panel 15 may be folded at right angles to the first inner side wall panel so that it overlies bottom panel and the second inner side wall panel 18 may be folded at right angles to the writing surface panel so that it extends downwardly with its edge 18a resting upon the upper surface of bottom panel 10 adjacent fold line 27.
Inner side wall panels 11 and 18 and the reinforced writing surface panel 15 may be seen occupying this position in FIGURE 2.
On the side of bottom panel 10 remote from panels 11, 15 and 18, a similar series of three panels are located, all integral with one another and with bottom panel 10. The first of these panels is the first outer side wall panel 28 which is separated from bottom panel 10 by fold line 27, on one side, and on the other side is separated by fold line 29 from the top window panel 30. The top window panel 30 is provided with a central aperture 31, as indicated in FIGURES 1, 2, 3 and 4.
The top window panel 30 is separated by fold line 32 from the second outer side wall panel 33 which, at its free edge 33:; carries a pair of locking tabs 34 which are spaced apart a distance equal to the spacing between cuts 13 and 14 found in fold line 12 which separates the bottom panel 10 from the first inner side wall panel 11.
Referring now to FIGURE 2, it may readily be seen that the first outer side wall panel, the top window panel and the second outer side wall panel may be then folded over the panels 11, 15 and 18 and the locking tabs 34 may be inserted in slots 14 so as to firmly provide a rectangular enclosure within which the manifolded continuous business forms are adapted to be received and stored.
Returning again to FIGURE 1, it may be seen that the top window panel 30 is provided, adjacent its forward edge 35 which forward edge also constitutes a fold line, with a reinforcing flap 36. Two spaced U-shaped cuts or tabs are formed in the flap 36 at 37 and aligned therewith, and at a distance from fold line 35 substantially equal to the distance between the cut 37 and the fold line 35, there are provided a pair of small circular apertures 38. The flap 36 is folded under the surface of the top window panel 30 to reinforce this forward edge and to provide the detent means which will be later de scribed with reference to FIGURE 7.
The carton in its present, partially set-up state is now represented by FIGURE 3.
Referring once again to FIGURE 1, it may be seen that the bottom panel 10 is provided, at each end, with a fold line, the front fold line bearing reference numeral 39 and the rear fold line bearing reference numeral 40. Fold line 39 separates the bottom panel 10 from a front end closure flap 41 which, in turn, is separated by fold line 42 from a tuck tab 43. An aperture 44 spans the fold line 42 as may be seen in FIGURE 1. Front end cross-closure tabs 45 and 46 are carried by inner side wall panel 11 and outer side Wall panel 28 respectively and are separated from these side wall panels by fold lines 47 and 48 respectively.
Returning again to FIGURE 3, it may be seen that the front end cross-closure tabs 45 and 46 may be folded at right angles to walls 11 and 28 respectively whereupon the front end closure flap 41 may be bent upwardly along fold line 39 and the tuck flap or tab 43 may be inserted over the upper edges 45a and 46a of tabs 45 and 46 to lie beneath the front edge 15a of the reinforced writing surface panel 15.
It will also be apparent that aperture 44 now cooperates and aligns with aperture 26 as may be seen in FIGURE 4.
At the rear end of the bottom panel 10 (see FIGURE 1), fold line 40 separates the bottom panel 10 from a series of business form positioning flaps 49, 50 and 51 which are separated from one another by fold lines 52 and 53. Flap 49 is coated with an adhesive as is the corresponding area of bottom panel 10 and as may be seen in FIGURE 2, panels 49, 50 and 51 are folded over so that panel 49 is adhered to the adhesive coated area 54 of bottom panel 10 while flap 50 provides a vertical transverse abutment wall extending across the enclosure containing the supply of business forms. Flap 51 extends reawardly and downwardly from the upper edge of flap 50 as may be seen in FIGURES 2 and 6.
The first inner side wall panel 11 carries a substantially triangular flap 55 while the first outer side wall panel 28 carries a generally corresponding flap 46. The top window panel 30 is separated by fold line 57 from a rear end closure flap 58 which, in turn, is separated by fold line 59 from a tuck flap 60.
Referring now again to FIGURES 2 and 3, it will be seen that when the series of business form positioning flaps 49, 50 and 51 have been folded as shown in FIG- URE 2 and glued so that flap 49 is adhered to bottom flap 10, tabs 55 and 56 may be folded upon their fold lines 61 and 62 respectively so that they overlie fiap 51 whereupon the rear end closure flap 58 (see FIGURE 3) may be folded down upon its fold line 57 so that the tuck flap may be inserted between the free edge 63 of flap 51 and the surface of flap 49 remote from the bottom panel 10.
When these folds have been made, the locking tabs and the fiaps bent and inserted, the assembly of the carton is complete and it has the appearance as shown in FIGURE 4.
Prior to the complete set-up of the carton, however, a supply of continuous, manifolded business forms must be inserted in the carton and properly arranged with respect to the carton so that the may be withdrawn one at a time in the desired manner.
Referring to FIGURE 5, the manifolded business forms will be seen to comprise a continuous strip of material in which each form 70 is separated from each adjacent form by a line of perforations 71 by means of which one form may be severed from the next succeeding form. As is conventional, a pair of spaced perforated holes 72 are provided adjacent one end of each of the forms 70. These holes enable the forms to be filed upon commercially available filing devices. It will be seen that the manifolded forms occupy a zig-zag configuration and are arranged in a stack which is generally indicated by the reference numeral 73. As shown, the manifolded forms are in duplicate with each form constituting two sheets of paper. It is equally apparent that, according to the present invention, single manifolded forms may be employed or the forms may be manifolded in triplicate, in quadruplicate or in any other number.
Referring to FIGURE 6, it will be seen that the stack of manifolded forms 73 lies within the carton and is located in a front-to-rear position by means of the front end closure flap 41 and the transverse vertical form positioning wall constituted by flap 50.
The forms from the stack 73 are led upwardly and around the rear edge of the reinforced Writing surface panel 15, this rear edge being constituted by fold line 23 between the writing surface panel 15 and the reinforcing flap 21 as seen in FIGURE 1. From this rear edge of the writing surface panel, the form is led forwardly over the writing surface panel but under the top window panel 30. The length of the top window panel 30 and the writing surface panel 15 are, of course, related to the length of the form 70 with which the carton is to be used and, as seen in FIGURE 6, the relative lengths of the forms 70 and the carton are such that when the free end 70a of a form 71) lies adjacent the front edge of the carton, the perforation line 71 lies at the rear edge of the writing surface panel 15.
The line of perforations 71 separating an adjacent form or pair of forms 70 naturally produces a tendency for the continuous strip of forms to form a sharp crease along this line. The arrival of this perforated line at the edge of the writing surface panel provides an adequate resistance to withdrawal of the form that there is a very noticeable tendency for the form to stick at this exact point. Thus, the operator of the device, withdrawing a form, finds that when one complete form has been completely withdrawn, there is a sudden increase in the amount of force required to withdraw the form with the result that the withdrawal movement naturally stops at this point whereupon the withdrawn form may be separated from the form next to be withdrawn along the exposed perforation line 71 as seen in FIGURE 6.
The form next to be withdrawn now lies flat upon the writing surface panel 15 and the major portion of the surface of the form is exposed through the window 31 so that information may be entered upon it while it is still associated with the carton. When the information has been completely entered, the forward edge of the form may be grasped at the location provided by the cooperating apertures 26 and 44 as can be seen in FIG- URE 4.
When it is desired to use manifolded business forms in duplicate or in a greater number, it is convenient if a carbon copy of the uppermost form may be made while the information is being entered thereon. In order to accomplish this, without the use of carbonless paper a continuous sheet of carbon paper lying between all of the manifolded forms, the slots provided by cuts 19 and 20 are employed. A U-shaped cardboard strip comprising a horizontal member 75 and a pair of legs 76 is employed with the legs 76 being received in the slots 19 and 20 so that the member 75 lies across and bridges the writing surface panel 15. A sheet of carbon paper 77 is provided with a U-shaped folded portion 78 at one end and the portion 78 is hooked over the member 75 bridging the writing surface panel 15. When the forms 70 are led through the carton, the uppermost form is led above the member 75 and lies on top of the carbon paper While the lowermost of the duplicate forms 70 is passed beneath the member 75 and lies beneath the carbon paper. It will be appreciated that the carbon paper, lying upon the writing surface panel 15 will enable a carbon copy to be made of any information entered upon the upper of the duplicate form 70 and it will be apparent that the carbon paper 77 will remain in its impressionproducing position irrespective of the withdrawal of the duplicate forms.
A detail of the carbon paper arrangement and the holding bracket may be seen in FIGURE 10.
Although the arrival of the perforated line 71 at the rear edge of the writing surface panel 15 will, in most instances and under normal circumstances, provide an adequate stop to enable the forms to be indexed out of the carton one at a time, additional means to provide more positive stopping and indexing of the for-ms at the correct place may be desired.
For this purpose, detent means may be incorporated in the carton in any one of at least three embodiments illustrated in FIGURES 7, 8 and 9.
In FIGURE 7, the forward edge of the top window panel 30 is shown as reinforced by the folded flap 36 within which, as was earlier described, there had been formed a pair of spaced apart, U-shaped cuts 37 to form tabs 37a. These tabs 370, when the flap 36 is folded over, align themselves with apertures 38 so that the tab 37a may be bent downwardly by inserting the point of a pencil or similar instrument through aperture 38 and pressing downwardly upon the tab 37a.
It is also apparent from FIGURE 7 that the apertures provided in the writing surface panel 15 and its reinforcing fiap 22 align themselves with these tabs 37a and their associated apertures 38 so that downward pressure on tab 37a applied through aperture 38 may cause the 6 tab 37a to bend downwardly and enter the openings 25 provided in writing surface panel 15 and its reinforcing flap 22.-
As was described with reference to FIGURE 5, the business forms 70 are conventionally provided with a pair of spaced apertures 72 and the spacing between these apertures '72 is equal to the spacing between the U-shaped tabs 37a so that when the invoice arrives at the position shown in FIGURE 7, the inherently resilient nature of the cardboard from which the carton is constructed will cause the tabs 37a to spring downwardly into these apertures 72 and cause an increase in the amount of force required to withdraw the invoice thereby assisting in arresting the withdrawal movement of the business forms when one complete form has been withdrawn.
According to FIGURE 8, the tabs 37a are replaced by an insert member 80 in which a dome-shaped portion 81 has been embossed. The U-shaped cut 37 is replaced by a circular aperture 82 through which the dome-shaped portion 81 may project downwardly towards the writing surface panel 15. The function of the dome-shaped portion 81 of the insert member 80 with respect to the forms 70 is identical to that described with reference to FIG- URE 7.
In FIGURE 9, the insert member 80 is dispensed with and the cardboard of the top window panel is embossed to provide a downwardly projecting dome-shaped portion 83 which engages the apertures 72 in the forms through an opening 82 in the reinforcing flap 36 in the same manner as is described with reference to FIG- URE 8.
From the foregoing description it is believed apparent that a simple, economical, efficient and functional carton has been developed which can be set up from a one-piece blank and which is adapted to contain a supply of manifolded, continuous business forms to permit the successive withdrawal of the forms and to provide a writing surface to support the form next to be withdrawn so that information may be entered thereon while the form is still associated with the carton.
Minor modifications of construction are contemplated by the invention within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A carton adapted to contain a supply of manifolded continuous business forms, to permit the successive withdrawal of the forms and to provide a writing surface to support the form next to be withdrawn so that information may be entered thereon while the form is still associated with the carton, the carton being formed from a one-piece blank, cut, scored and folded to comprise a bottom panel centrally located in the blank and integral with a series of three adjacent panels on each side thereof and separated therefrom by parallel scored fold lines, the three adjacent panels on one side comprising a first inner side wall panel, a writing surface panel and a second inner side wall panel, the writing surface panel having a flap integral therewith at each end and separated therefrom by scored fold lines at each end at right angles to the two inner side wall panels, the flaps being adapted to be folded over and glued onto the writing surface panel to reinforce it, the said three adjacent panels being adapted to be folded with each panel at right angles to each adjacent panel to form a rectangular enclosure over the bottom panel with the writing surface panel lying above and parallel to the bottom panel, the supply of business forms being received in this enclosure, the three adjacent panels on the other side of the bottom panel comprising a first outer side wall panel adapted to be folded. at right angles to the bottom panel and to lie against the outside of the second inner side wall panel, a top window panel adapted to overlie the writing surface panel and to expose a major portion of the area of the writing surface panel through an aperture in the top window panel, and a second outer side wall panel adapted to lie against the outer surface of the first inner side wall panel, the second outer side wall panel having a pair of lock tabs engageable with slots in the fold line between the bottom panel and the first side wall panel, front end flap and tab means to close one end of the carton, a series of business form positioning flaps carried by the end of the bottom panel remote from the front end closure means and adapted to be folded upon itself and glued to the bottom panel to present a vertical transverse abutment wall to maintain the supply of business forms at least as far forwardly of the carton as the rear .edge of the writing surface panel, and a rear end closure cross tab carried by the corresponding end of each of the first inner side wall panel and the first outer side wall panel and a rear end closure flap carried by a corresponding end of the top Window panel and adapted, together with the end closure cross tabs, to close the rear end of the carton, the manifolded business forms being led from a supply within the enclosure, over the rear edge of the Writing surface panel and forwardly to the front edge of the carton between the writing surface panel and the top window panel. I
2. A cart-on as claimed in claim 1 wherein the front edge of the top window panel embodies means to aid in arresting the withdrawal movement of the business forms Whenone completebusiness form has been withdrawn.
3. A carton as claimed in claim 2 wherein said means to aid in arresting the withdrawal movement of the business for-ms comprises detent means extending from the underside of the top window panel towards the writing surface panel which detent means are adapted to cooperate with apertures provided in each business form.
4. A carton as claimed in claim 3 wherein the detent means comprises a U-shaped tab of material from which the blank is made, the tab being adapted to be bent downwardly towards the writing surface panel.
5. A carton as claimed in claim 3 Whereinthe detent means comprises a herni-spherical dome embossed in the material from which the blank is made and extending downwardly towards the writing surface panel.
6. A carton as claimed in claim 3 wherein the detent means comprises an insert member mounted on the top window panel and carrying a hemi-spherical dome portion extending downwardly towards the writing surface panel.
7. A carton as claimed in claim 2 wherein notch means are provided adjacent the front edge of the writing surface panel by means of which the forward edge of the business form next to be Withdrawn is accessible.
8. A carton as claimed in claim 1 wherein the business form positioning flap adapted topresent a vertical transverse abutment wall to maintain the supply of business forms forwardly of the rear edge ofthe writing surface, the rear end closure cross tabs and the rear end closure flaps are arranged to present a sloping, wrist-supporting surface rearwardly of the rear edge of the writingsurface panel.

Claims (1)

1. A CARTON ADAPTED TO CONTAIN A SUPPLY OF MANIFOLEDED CONTINUOUS BUSINESS FORMS, TO PERMIT THE SUCCESSIVE WITHDRAWAL OF THE FORMS AND TO PROVIDE A WRITING SURFACE TO SUPPORT THE FORM NEXT TO BE WITHDRAWN SO THAT INFORMATION MAY BE ENTERED THEREON WHILE THE FORM IS STILL ASSOCIATED WITH THE CARTON, THE CARTON BEING FORMED FROM A ONE-PIECE BLANK, CUT, SCORED AND FOLEDED TO COMPRISE A BOTTOM PANEL CENTRALLY LOCATED IN THE BLANK AND INTEGRAL WITH A SERIES OF THREE ADJACENT PANELS ON EACH SIDE THEREOF AND SEPARATED THEREFROM BY APRALLEL SCORED FOLD LINES, THE THREE ADJACENT PANELS ON ONE SIDE COMPRISING A FIRST INNER SIDE WALL PANEL, A WRITING SURFACE PANEL AND A SECOND INNER SIDE WALL PANEL, THE WRITING SURFACE PANEL HAVING A FLAP INTERGRAL THEREWITH AT EACH END AND SPEARATED THEREFROM BY SCORED FOLD LINES AT EACH END AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE TWO INNER SIDE WALL PANESL, THE FLAPS BEING ADAPTED TO BE FOLDED OVER AND GLUED ONTO THE WRITING SURFACE PANEL TO REINFORCE IT, THE SAID THREE ADJACENT PANELS BEING ADAPTED TO BE FOLDED WITH EACH PANEL AT RIGHT ANGLES TO EACH ADJACENT PANEL TO FORM A RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE OVER THE BOTTOM PANEL WITH THE WRITING SURFACE PANEL LYING ABOVE AND PARALLEL TO THE BOTTOM PANEL, THE SUPPLY OF BUSINESS FORMS BEING RECEIVED IN THIS ENCLOSURE, THE THREE ADJACENT PANELS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BOTTOM PANEL COMPRISING A FIRST OUTER SIDE WALL PANEL ADAPTED TO BE FOLDED AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE BOTTOM PANEL AND TO LIE AGAINST THE OUTSIDE OF THE SECOND INNER SIDE WALL PANEL, A TOP WINDOW PANEL ADAPTED TO OVERLIE THE WRITING SURFACE PANEL AND TO EXPOSE A MAJOR PORTION OF THE AREA OF THE WRITING SURFACE PANEL THROUGH AN APERTURE IN THE TOP WINDOW PANEL, AND A SECOND OUTER OF THE FIRST INNER SIDE WALL PANEL, THE SECOND OUTER SURFACE OF THE FIRST INNER SIDE WALL PANEL, THE SECOND OUTER SIDE WALL PANEL HAVING A PAIR OF LOCK TABS ENGAGEABLE WITH SLOTS IN THE FOLD LINE BETWEEN THE BOTTOM PANEL AND THE FIRST SIDE WALL PANEL, FRONT END FLAP AND TAB MEANS TO CLOSE ONE END OF THE CARTON, A SERIES OF BUSINESS FORM POSITIONING FLAPS CARRIED BY THE END OF THE BOTTOM PANEL REMOTE FROM THE FRONT END CLOSURE MEANS AND ADAPTED TO BE FOLDED UPON ITSELF AND GULED TO THE BOTTOM PANEL TO PRESENT A VERTICAL TRANSVERSE ABUTMENT WALL TO MAINTAIN THE SUPPLY OF BUSINESS FORMS AT LEAST AS FAR FORWARDLY OF THE CARTON AS THE REAR EDGE OF THE WRITING SURFACE PANEL, AND A REAR END CLOSURE CROSS TAB CARRIED BY THE CORRESPONDING END OF EACH OF THE FIRST INNER SIDE WALL PANEL AND THE FIRST OUTER SIDE WALL PANEL AND A REAR END CLOSURE FLAP CARRIED BY A CORRESPONDING END OF THE TOP WINDOW PANEL AND ADAPTED, TOGETHER WITH THE END CLOSURE CROSS TABS, TO CLOSE THE REAR END OF THE CARTON, THE MANIFOLDED BUSINESS FORMS BEING LED FROM A SUPPLY WITHIN THE ENCLOSURE, OVER THE REAR EDGE OF THE WRITING SURFACE PANEL AND FORWARDLY TO THE FRONT EDGE OF THE CARTON BETWEEN THE WRITING SURFACE PANEL AND THE TOP WINDOW PANEL.
