Cl. 225-48 14 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This disclosure relates to a dispensing container or carton, and a blank for making same, wherein such carton is particularly adapted for dispensing a roll of elongated sheet material carried therewithin. The carton has a hinged top wall which is easily opened and after pulling an end portion of the sheet material out of the carton the top wall is reclosed by inserting a flap provided at its terminal end against the front wall of the carton with such end portion sandwished therebetween. The carton is constructed so that the swinging end of such top wall may be pushed partially within the carton to enable easy' grasping of a comparatively large area of such end portion so that a section of sheet material may be dispensed and severed by pulling it against a cutter defining the top edge of such front wall.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Many elongated sheet materials are provided in roll form and sold in a carton which is used as a dispensing carton. Usually such a carton has a cutter defining the top edge of its front wall which is used to sever a section of elongated sheet material as it is pulled from within the dispensing carton. However, with present cartons it is difficult to grasp the terminal end portion of such sheet material to enable the desired length thereof to be pulled from within the carton. It is also quite common in using present cartons for a user to injure a finger by rubbing it on the cutting edge of the cutter during the process of trying to grasp the terminal end portion of such sheet material.
SUMMARY This invention provides an improved dispensing container or carton and a blank for making same in which such dispensing carton is particularly adapted to enable easy dispensing of a roll of elongated sheet material from within such carton. Further, this invention provides an improved blank for making such a dispensing carton which utilizes a minimum amount of blank material to thereby provide a carton which can be produced more economically.
Other details, uses, and advantages of this invention will become apparent as the following description of the embodiment thereof presented in the accompanying drawings proceeds.

DESCRIPTION OF ILLUSTRATED EMBODIMENT In the exemplary embodiment of this invention illus trated in FIG. 1 of the drawings, an improved container or carton designated generally by the numeral 20 is illustrated. Carton 20 has a bottom wall 21 and a pair of oppositely arranged side walls designated respectively by the numerals 22 and 23 adjoining opposite side edges of bottom wall 21. A pair of oppositely arranged and substantially identical end walls each designated respectively by the numeral 25 is provided and such end walls are fastened between side walls 22 and 23 and adjoin opposite ends of bottom wall 21 in a manner as will be described in detail subsequently. In some instances throughout this specification, the side wall 22 and 23 will also be referred to as rear wall 22 and front wall 23 respectively.
Carton 20 also has a top wall 26 which has one side edge hingedly fastened along a common score line 27 which defines the attached side edge of top wall 26 and the top edge of side wall 22. Top wall 26 has a closure flap 31 extending from a score line 32 which defines the side edge of top wall 26 which is arranged opposite the side edge 27 and score line 32 is arranged parallel to score line 27.
As seen particularly in FIG. 1 of the drawings, the closure flap 31 is initially fastened against the outside surface of the side wall 23 in such a manner that it is readily detachable therefrom and as will be described in detail subsequently. The closure flap 31 is also constructed and arranged so that it may be inserted within carton 20 against the inside surface of the front Wall and used as a tuck flap to reclose the carton 20.
As seen particularly in FIGS. 2, 9, and 10, the top wall 26 has a pair of extension flaps each designated by the same numeral 34 extending from its opposite end edges and each end edge is defined by a weakened line of separation designated by the numeral 35. Each extension flap 34 extends outwardly of an associated line of separation 35 and is adapted to be folded and fastened in position substantially perpendicular to top wall 26 to define the top outer surface of its associated end wall 25.
With the extension flaps 34 fastened in position, the top wall 26 is easily severed from the extension flaps 34 along the lines of separation 35 by grasping and pulling the flap 31, to define a maximum area access opening for carton 24} as indicated at 36.
The carton 20 is particularly adapted to be used as a storage and dispensing carton for a roll of elongated sheet or strip material designated by the numeral 40, see FIG. 2, carried within carton 20. The sheet material is unrolled and dispensed from within the carton 20 in a manner as will be subsequently described and dispensing is relatively simple due to the structural configuration of the dispensing carton 20 of this invention.
Although each weakened line of separation 35 may be formed using any suitable technique, in this example of the invention each line of separation 35 is defined by a set of spaced apart cuts each designated by the numeral 41 and with only a few representative ones being so designated in FIG. 10. The cuts 41 in each set are arranged end-to-end and in spaced apart relation in a rectilinear path to define an associated end edge on top wall 26 and an associated extension flap 34 extends outwardly of a set of spaced apart rectilinear cuts.
Each end Wall 25 of carton 20 in this example of the invention is comprised of an extension flap 34 extending from the top wall 26, as well as extension flaps extending from the other exterior walls 2123. Thus, as seen in FIGS. 9 and of the drawings a pair of extension flaps each designated by the same numeral 43 extends from opposite ends of bottom wall 21. A pair of extension flap-s each designated by the same numeral 44 extends from opposite ends of side wall 23 and similarly a pair of exten sion flaps each designated by the numeral 45 extends from opposite ends of side wall 22. The extension flaps 34, 43, 44, and 45 at each end of carton are adapted to be folded into a common plane and suitably fastened together to define an associated end wall 25.
As seen particularly in FIG. 9 of the drawings, the extension fiaps 44 and 45 provided at each end of carton 20 define the inside surface of an associated end wall and the adjacent extension flaps 34 and 43 define the outside surface of such end wall. The extension flaps 34, 43, 44, and arranged at each end of carton 20 are suitably fastened together by adhesive means, such as glue or the like, to define end wall 25.
As previously indicated, the closure flap 31 of this example of the invention is easily unfastened from the front wall 23. One exemplary technique for providing such easy unfastening of the closure flap 31 is to make carton 20 with an outside surface defined by a web of comparatively thin material which is suitably laminated against a comparatively thicker layer of an inexpensive material such as paperboard. In this example of the invention and as illustrated in FIG. 11 the carton 20 is made of a paperboard layer which has a layer of metallic foil designated by the numeral 51 defining the exterior surface thereof.
A plurality of circular cuts are provided through the metallic foil layer and each cut is desginated by the numeral 52. The circular cuts are arranged across front wall 23 in spaced apart relation and a film which resists adhesion by glue, or the like, and often referred to as a glue retarder, is applied in a strip extending completely across front wall 23 and having a width which is substantially wider than the diameter of each circular cut 52. A predetermined comparatively small area is provided within each circular cut 52 in which the glue retarder has been left off.
The inside surface of the closure flap 31 has a glue strip extending completely thereacross and adapted to register over the circular cuts 52. The glue retarder prevents the closure flap 31 from adhering to front wall 23 except at those comparatively small areas within each circular cut 52 on which the glue retarder has not been applied. Upon grasping the end portion indicated at 54 of closure flap 31, the closure flap is readily opened by severing away the portion of metallic foil arranged within each circular cut 52 to thereby assure that the front wall 23 and closure flap 31 are not damaged during the process of opening the carton 20. Also, upon inserting the closure flap 31 in carton 20 as a tuck flap the front wall 23 has a pleasing appearance.
The carton 20 has a cutter 55 provided with a sawlike cutting edge 56 and cutter 55 is fixed to the front wall 23 and effectively defines the top edge thereof. The cutter 55 is fixed to front wall 23 in any suitable manner and in this example is fixed in position by punching portions of the cutter 55 indicated at 57 through the front wall 23 and bending such punched-through portions against the inside surface of front wall 23 in a rivet-like manner to hold the cutter 55 firmly in position.
Thus it is seen that closure flap 31 is easily unfastened from front wall 23 in the manner described above and upon pulling the flap upwardly the top Wall 26 is severed along weakened lines of separation 35 defining its opposite end edges to thereby effectively separate the top wall 26 from the oppositely arranged end walls 25. The severed edge defined upon pulling the closure flap 31 and top wall 26 upwardly is indicated at each end by the numeral at 60.
The roll of elongated sheet material 40 is then easily removed from within the carton 20 inasmuch as a maximum area access opening is provided in carton 20 and with the roll 40 thus removed it is easy to unroll a terminal end portion 62 of the sheet material. The roll 40 is then placed within carton 20 and the terminal end portion 62 is sandwiched between the inside surface of front wall 23 and the outside surface of closure flap 31 by inserting closure flap 31 within carton 20 and using it as a tuck flap, see FIG. 4.
To dispense a desired length or section of sheet material from within carton 20, the technique Which is illustrated in FIGS. 5-8 of the drawing is used. The unique construction of carton 20 enables the swinging end of top wall 26 to be pushed Within carton 20 as shown at 64.
With the top Wall 26 thus pushed within carton 20, a comparatively large area of end portion 62 is exposed as shown at 65, see FIG. 6, enabling a user to grasp the comparatively large area portion 65 between a thumb and index finger, for example, and pull a desired section of sheet material from Within carton 20 in the manner illustrated in FIG. 7 of the drawings. Having pulled a desired section or length from within carton 20, the section is then pulled downwardly against the cutting edge 56 of cutter 55 to thereby sever such section from the supply roll.
With each carton previously proposed it is not possible to push its top wall, which is comparable to top wall 26, inwardly in the manner illustrated in FIG. 5 of the drawings. This is due in part because of the construction of the end walls of each previously proposed carton wherein each end wall is provided with a flap which extends from its top edge toward the center of the carton and is arranged to support an end portion of the top wall essentially as a backup flap. With this structural arrangement, it is impossible to push the top Wall inwardly in the manner illustrated in FIG. 5 to enable easy grasping of the end portion of the sheet material. Also, with this structural arrangement, it is necessary to lift each of the above-described backup flaps outwardly so that each extends co-extensive with its associated end wall to assure that upon lifting the roll of material from within the dispensing carton the end edges thereof are not damaged. In addition, with this structural arrangement, considerably more time is required to prepare a carton so that its roll of sheet material may be easily dispensed therefrom.
By contrast, it will be appreciated that with the improved dispensing carton 20 of this invention a maximum area opening is provided, as previously explained, to enable the roll 40 of elongated sheet material to be initially lifted from within the carton 20 so that its end portion 62 may be placed in position between the inside surface of front wall 23 and the outside surface of flap 31 with flap 31 being used essentially as a tuck flap.
Carton 20 may be formed in any suitable manner and using any suitable foldable material. It is preferably formed from the carton blank designated generally by the numeral 70 and illustrated in FIG. of the drawings. Blank 70 is made of paperboard, or the like, and in this example has a surface thereof laminated with metallic foil, such as aluminum-containing metallic foil, or the like, which may be suitably colored, embossed, imprinted, or remaining plain, as desired. As seen in FIG. 11, for this example of the invention the aluminum foil surface is designated by the numeral 51 and defines the exterior surface of carton while the paperboard layer 50 defines the inside surface of such carton.
Blank 70 has a substantially rectangular outline and practically the entire blank is arranged within such rectangular outline. Thus, it will be appreciated that the particular arrangement of blank 70 enables the resulting carton 20 which is made from blank 70 to be made using a minimum amount of blank material.
Blank 70 is suitably cut and scored so as to define the resulting container 20 upon assembly thereof. Thus, blank 70 has a pair of parallel spaced apart score lines each designated by the same numeral 71 and each score line 71 is arranged adjacent a side edge of the rectangular outline blank and score lines 71 define the lateral extent in one direction of walls 21-23. The weakened lines of separation 35, each defined by spaced apart rectilinear cuts 41, as previously described in connection with the description of carton 20 are arranged in an aligned manner adjacent opposite side edges of blank 70. Each weakened line of separation effectively defines an extension for an associated score line 71 with top wall 26 defined therebetween.
Blank 70 also has a plurality of parallel spaced apart score lines designated by the numerals 32, 27, 73, and 74 and such score lines extend between weakened lines of separation 35 and the parallel spaced apart score lines 71. The above mentioned score lines 32, 27, 73 and 74 define closure flap 31 extending outwardly of score line 32, top wall 26 between score lines 27 and 32, side wall 22 between score lines 27 and 73, bottom wall 21 between score lines 73 and 74, and side wall 23 outwardly of score line 74.
Blank 70 has a plurality of flaps 34, 43, 44, and 45 arranged outwardly of each score line 71 and an associated weakened line of separation 35 which are adapted to be folded together to define an associated end wall 25. For simplicity, the description will now proceed with a description of the manner of forming or defining the flaps for one end wall 25; however, it will be appreciated that such description is fully applicable to both end walls.
The flaps which comprise end wall 25 are defined by a plurality of parallel spaced apart rectilinear cuts cooperating with score line 71 and associated weakened line of separation 35. Thus, blank 70 has a rectilinear cut 76 aligned with score line 27 which cooperates with weakened line of separation to define extension flap 34, a rectilinear cut 77 aligned with score line 73 and cooperating with a part of score line 71 and rectilinear cut 76 to define extension flap 45, a rectilinear cut 80 aligned with score line 74 and cooperating with another part of score line 71 and rectilinear cut 77 to define extension flap 43, and the rectilinear cut 80 aligned with score line 74 also cooperates with still another part of score line 71 to define flap 44.
Blank 70 also has a plurality of circular cuts 52 provided in aligned relation along the front wall 23 for the purpose which was described in detail earlier in this specification.
[Although in this example of the invention blank is made of a suitable paperboard having metallic foil laminated to a surface thereof, it will be appreciated that blank 70 and hence carton 20 may be made of any suitable foldable material and need not necessarily have a layer such as metallic foil laminated thereagainst.
The carton 20 made in accordance With this invention is particularly adapted to be used for dispensing a roll of sheet material such as a roll of aluminum foil. When using the carton 20 of this invention as a storage and dispensing carton for aluminum foil, the foil may be dispensed efficiently and rapidly without likelihood of injury to a person using the foil.
In addition, the unique configuration of the blank 70 lends itself to a more rapid assembly of carton 20 to thereby provide a carton which is comparatively inexpensive to produce. In particular (because there are no backup fiaps, or the like, hingedly fastened to the end walls 25), it is a simple matter to fold the carton about its score lines 32, 27, 73, and 74, then fold the inner flaps 44 and 45 in position, and finally adhesively fasten the outer fiaps 34 and 43 against the previously folded inner flaps 44 and 45 with optimum folding speed and as may be provided by mechanical equipment.
While a present preferred embodiment of this invention has been illustrated and described, it will be recognized that this invention may be otherwise variously embodied and practiced within the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A container comprising, a bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged side walls fastened adjoining opposite side edges of said bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged end walls fastened between said side walls and adjoining opposite ends of said bottom Wall, a top wall having one side hingedly fastened along the top edge of one of said side walls, said top wall having a closure flap extending from the side edge thereof arranged opposite said one side edge, said closure flap being initially fastened against the outside surface of the other of said pair of said walls and adapted to be readily unfastened therefrom to open said top wall as Well as being useable as a tuck flap to reclose said top wall, and a pair of extension flaps extending from opposite end edges of said top Wall, each of said extension flaps being fastened in position to define a part of the top outer surface of an associated end wall, said top wall being severable from said extension flaps to define a maximum area access opening for said container which enables the swinging end of said top wall and said tuck flap to be pushed within said container upon'reclosing thereof.
2. A container as set forth in claim 1 in which, said top wall has a set of spaced apart cuts arranged in a rectilinear path defining each of its end edges with each of said extension flaps extending outwardly of an associated set of cuts and said top wall is easily severed along each set of cuts by grasping and pulling said closure flap.
3. A container comprising, a bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged side walls fastened adjoining opposite side edges of said bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged end walls fastened between said side walls and adjoining opposite ends of said bottom wall, a top wall having one side hingedly fastened along the top edge of one of said side walls, said top wall having a closure flap extending from the side edge thereof arranged opposite said one side edge, said closure flap being initially fastened against the outside surface of the other of said pair of side walls and adapted to be readily unfastened therefrom to open said top wall as well as being useable as a tuck flap to reclose said top wall, and said end walls being comprised of a pair of extension flaps extending from opposite ends of said top wall, a pair of extension flaps extending from opposite ends of said bottom wall, and a pair of extension flaps extending from opposite ends of each of said side walls, said extension flaps at each end of said container being folded into a common plane and fastened together to define an associated end wall, each of said extension flaps extending from each of said side walls comprising the inside surface of an associated end wall and each of said extension flaps extending from each of said bottom and top walls comprising the outside surface of an associated end wall, said top wall being severable from said extension flaps to define a maximum area access opening for said container which enables the swinging end of said top wall and said tuck flap to be pushed within said container upon reclosing thereof.
4. In combination: a dispensing container and a roll of elongated sheet material carried within said container, said container comprising, a bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged side walls fastened adjoining opposite side edges of said bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged end walls fastened between said side walls and adjoining opposite ends of said bottom wall, a top wall having one side hingedly fastened along the top edge of one of said side walls, said top wall having a closure flap extending from the side edge thereof arranged opposite said one side edge, said closure flap being initially fastened against the outside surface of the other of said pair of side walls and adapted to be readily unfastened therefrom to open said top wall as well as being useable as a tuck flap to reclose said top wall and guide a terminal end portion of said sheet material between said tuck flap and said other side wall, each of said end walls being defined by a plurality of extension fiaps folded into a common plane and being suitably fastened together with each end wall having no greater than a double thickness throughout the major portion of its area, and said plurality of extension flaps comprising a pair of extension flaps extending from opposite end edges of said top wall, said top wall being easily severed from its extension flaps to define a maximum area access opening for said container which enables the swinging end of said top wall together with said tuck flap and the severed end edges of said top wall to be pushed within said container in an unobstructed manner upon reclosing thereof to expose a comparatively large area of said end portion to enable easy grasping thereof and dispensing from said container.
5. The combination as set forth in claim 4 further comprising a cutter fixed to the top end portion of said other side wall and defining the top edge thereof said cutter being adapted to sever said sheet material upon pulling a section thereof parallel to said side wall and then against said cutter.
6. The combination as set forth in claim 4 in which said top wall of said container has a pair of weakened lines of separation defining its opposite end edges with each of said top wall extension fiaps extending outwardly of an associated line of separation and said top wall is easily severed along its weakened lines of separation by grasping and pulling said closure flap.
7. The combination as set forth in claim 4 in which said top wall of said container has a set of spaced apart cuts arranged in a rectilinear path defining each of its end edges with each of said top wall extension flaps extending outwardly of an associated set of cuts and said top wall is easily severed along each set of cuts by grasping and pulling said closure flap.
8. The combination as set forth in claim 4 in which said roll of elongated sheet material comprises a roll of metallic foil, said top wall has a set of spaced apart cuts arranged in a rectilinear path defining each of its end edges with each of said top wall extension flaps extending outwardly of an associated set of cuts, said top wall is easily severed along each set of cuts by grasping and pulling said closure flap, and said combination further comprises a cutter fixed to the top end portion of said other side wall and defining the top edge thereof, said cutter being adapted to sever said metallic foil upon pulling a section thereof parallel to said side wall and then against said cutter.
9. In combination: a dispensing container and a roll of elongated sheet material carried within said container, said container comprising, a bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged side walls fastened adjoining opposite side edges of said bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged end walls fastened between said side walls and adjoining opposite ends of said bottom wall, a top wall having one side hingedly fastened along the top edge of one of said side walls, said top wall having a closure flap extending from the side edge thereof arranged opposite said one side edge, said closure flap being initially fastened against the outside surface of the other of said pair of side walls and adapted to be readily unfastened therefrom to open said top wall as well as being useable as a tuck flap to reclose said top wall and guide a terminal end portion of said sheet material between said tuck flap and said other side wall, and a pair of extension flaps extending from opposite end edges of said top wall, each of said extension flaps of said contained being fastened in position to define a part of the top outer surface of an associated end wall, said top wall being severable from said extension fiaps to define a maximum area access opening for siad container which enables the swinging end of said top wall and said tuck flap to be pushed within said container upon reclo-sing thereof to expose a comparatively large area of said end portion to enable easy grasping thereof and dispensing from said container.
10. The combination as set forth in claim 9 in which, said top 'wall of said container has a set of spaced apart cuts arranged in a rectilinear path defining each of its end edges with each of said extension flaps extending outwardly of an associated set of cuts and said top wall is easily severed along each set of cuts by grasping and pulling said closure flap.
11. In combination: a dispensing container and a roll of elongated sheet material carried within said container, said container comprising; a bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged side walls fastened adjoining opposite side edges of said bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged end walls fastened between said side walls and adjoining opposite ends of said bottom wall, a top wall having one side hingedly fastened along the top edge of one of said side walls, said top wall having a closure flap extending from the side edge thereof arranged opposite said one side edge, said closure fiap being initially fastened against the outside surface of the other of said pair of side walls and adapted to be readily unfastened therefrom to open said top wall as well as being useable as a tuck flap to reclose said top wall and guide a terminal end portion of said sheet material between asid tuck flap and said other side wall, and said end walls of said container being comprised of a pair of extension fiaps extending from opposite ends of said top wall, a pair of extension flaps extending from opposite ends of said bottom wall, and a pair of extension flaps extending from opposite ends of each of 7 said side walls, said extension flaps at each end of said container being folded into acommon plane and fastened together to define an associated end wall, each of said extension flaps extending from each of said side walls of said container comprising the inside surface of an associated end wall and each of said extension flaps extending from each of said bottom and top walls of said container comprising the outside surface of an associated end wall, said top wall being severable from said extension flaps to define a maximum area access opening for said container which enables the swinging end of said top wall and said tuck flap to be pushed within said container upon reclosing thereof to expose a comparatively large area of said end portion to enable easy grasping thereof and dispensing from said container.
12. A blank being cut and scored to define a resulting container upon assembly thereof, said blank comprising, a bottom wall, a pair of extension flaps foldably fastened to opposite ends of said bottom wall, a pair of oppositely arranged side walls foldably fastened to opposite side edges of said bottom wall, a pair of extension flaps foldably fastened to opposite ends of each of said side walls, each of said extension flaps extending from said side walls having a substantially rectangular outline and a continuous uninterrupted area which is no greater than half the aera of its associated end wall, a top wall having one side edge hingedly fastened along an edge of one of said side walls, said top wall having a closure flap for said resulting container extending from the side edge thereof arranged opposite said one side edge, said closure flap being initially fastened against the outside surface of the other of said pair of side walls of said resulting container and adapted to be readily 'unfastened therefrom to open said top wall as well as being useable as a tuck flap in said resulting container to reclose said top wall of said resulting container, and a pair of extension flaps extending from opposite end edges of said top Wall, said extension flaps at each end of said blank being adapted to be folded and fastened in a common plane to define an associted end wall for said resulting container with each end wall having no greater than a double thickness throughout the major portion of its area, and top wall of said resulting container being easily severed from the extension flaps extending from its opposite end edges to define a maximum area access opening for said resulting container which enables the swinging end of said top wall together with its tuck flap and the severed end edges of said top wall to be pushed within said resulting container in an unobstructed manner upon reclosing thereof.
13. A blank as set forth in claim 12 in which said top wall has a pair of weakened lines of separation defining its opposite end edges and each of said extension flaps extending from said top wall extends outwardly of an associated line of separation and said top wall is easily severed along its weakened lines of separation upon opening said resulting contained by grasping and pulling said closure flap.
14. A blank as set forth in claim 12 in which each of said extension flaps extending from said top and bottom walls has a rectangular outline and a continuous area approximately equal to half the area of its associated end wall to thereby assure in said resulting carton each end wall has no greater than said double thickness throughout the major portion of its area.
