UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DANKS, OE TROY, NEV YORK.
BURNER FOR PURIFYING GAS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,124, dated April 28, 1361.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DANKS, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in GasBurners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, said drawing representing a central section of a burner with my improvement.
My inventioniconsists in furnishing a gas burner with a chamber filled with hemp or liax saturated with nitric acid, such chamber being so arranged that the gas on its way to the external orifice of the burner is caused to pass through the interstices between the fibers of the hemp or flax by which it is prevented blowing through the burner and passing olf unconsumed, and is so purified as to produce a very brilliant light.
A is the burner tip which may be of any known kind.
B is the chamber, made of brass, iron or other metal, of spheroidal, cylindrical or other form, made with a female screw socket a, at its upper end, for the reception of the tip A, which screws into it, and with a female screw socket at the bottom similar to that at the bottom of an ordinary burner. To provide for the insertion of the hemp or flax c, c, within it, the chamber B, is divided at the middle of its height into two parts which are screwed together at d, d. The hemp or flax c, c, with which the said chamber is filled is in the fibrous condition to which it is brought by the breaking and heckling or other processes; and after having been gathered up and well saturated with nitric acid is packed into the chamber while still wet with the acid. The hemp or flax packing c, c, acts mechanically to break the pressure of the gas when excessive and so prevent any blowing through the burner without being consumed, and preserve a uniform consumption, and a uniform light. The nitric acid with which the hemp is saturated acts chemically to purify the gas.
To avoid any corrosive eects of the acid, the burner may be made of, or lined with porcelain or other anticorrosive substance. But the material of which the burner is composed forms no part of the present invention. Vhen it becomes necessary to resupply the hemp with acid the burner is to be removed from the gas pipe and the acid poured in through the aperture; or the parts of the chamber may be separated and a fresh supply of hemp also inserted.
I do not claim broadly the furnishing of a gas burner with a chamber filled with fibrous material; but
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The employment as a filling for a chamber B, applied in combination with a burner substantially as described, of hemp or flax saturated with nitric acid, as herein set forth.
