Description

I. EDGE.
Torch for Night Processions Patented June 12, 1860.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC EDGE, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
TORCH FOR NIGHT PROCESSIONS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,661, dated June 12, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC EDGE, of Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful and Improved Torch for Night Processions; and I declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a hand piece a, of wood or other proper material, to the upper part of which I attach one end of a closely fitting case b, of paper orv other proper materlal; preferring paper of proper quality and thickness, and made cylindrical and of a length proportionate to the requisite duration of light. Within the case or socket thus formed I place a capillary medium or wick c, of fibrous material, preferring the most common lamp wick of'cotton; of which I employ such number of strands as will be found best for the purpose required for the inflammable material used therewith; but usually such a number as when twisted close will form a mass about equal in diameter to one fourth the diameter of the case. This capillary medium may be saturated with some solution, which when dried will accelerate the combustion, as well as conduce to the prevention of smoke when burning; or this accelerating substance may be of some powdered salt which I mix with the wick,
or envelop therewith by a paper covering, for which purpose of acceleration I employ powdered niter, sulfur or other proper substance. The wick should extend beyond the outer end of the case, to faciltate lighting, and the lower end should be secured to the end of the hand piece; but this is not essential to the proper action of the torch when burning. The wick may be made to quite fill the case, in which condition I first saturate it with or mix it with a powdered medium which when burning will give white or colored fires. But the torch I prefer to employ for ordinary use, is the one first described with the small wick, in which case the manner set forth.
