UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HALVOR HALVORSON, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
MANUFACTURE OF CANDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,763, dated January 10, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HALVOR HALVORSON, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in the employment in combination with a tubular candle wick, of a lining of sized, starched or glazed paper or other substance sufficiently impervious to the material of which the candle is composed, applied within the said wick for the purpose of excluding the melted material from its air channel during the burning of the candle and so preserving a free passage for the air to the center of the flame till the candle is all burned.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1, is a central longitudinal section of one of my improved tubular wicked candles; and Fig. 2, is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
A, represents the body of the candle made of paraffin stearin stearic acid or any of the materials commonly employed. a, is the tubular Wick produced by braiding or plaiting in the same manner as the wicks for Argand lamp burners, or in any other suitable manner.
6, is the lining of sized starched or glazed paper or other impervious material that is applied inside of the wick. This kind of candle may be formed by any of the processes commonly employed, as molding, dipping, or basting, accordin to the material of which it is composed but generally by molding. The wick will be kept extended while the candle is bein made, by having a stick rod or tube passed tightly through it said stick rod or tube being withdrawn when the candle has cooled and become hard. The lining b, is applied by lapping the piece of paper or other substance of which it is composed around the stick rod or tube which is to keep the wick extended, before inserting the said stick rod or tube into the wick, and the said lining is caused to adhere to the wick by the candle material which passes through the wick in the manufacture of the candle.
The candle is to be used in a candlestick so constructed as to be capable of admitting air to the lower orifice of the tubular wick, and when the candle is lighted a strong draft of air is caused to ascend the tube and pass through the center of the flame, making the combustion more perfect and intense than in the solid flame of an ordinary candle and producing a more brilliant light.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The employment in combination with the tubular wick, of the inner lining b, of sized, starched or glazed paper or other sufiiciently impervious material, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
HALVOR HALVORSON.
