J. B. JOHNSON.
GRINDSTONE FRAME.
No. 321,221. Patented June 30, 1885.
I WITNESSES:
IN VENTOR ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. v
JULIUS B. JOHNSON, OF JOHNSON, NEBRASKA.
GRlNDSTONE-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,221, dated June 30, 1885.
Application filed October 17, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS B. JOHNSON, of Johnson, in the county of N emaha and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grindstone-Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide anew and improved knockdown grindstoneframe; and the invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as hcreinafterdescribed and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding-parts in both figures.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the frame when knocked down and compacted for shipmentor storage, and Fig. 2 a View in perspective of the frame when set up.
A A are the sides of the frame, which may be of the ordinary rectangular construction in transversesection, but which are made with oppositely-arranged grooves a a in them down their inner faces, near each end, and with which, by reason of the construction and fit of the legs B B, frame cross end pieces to keep said sides at their proper distance apart are dispensed with.
The legs B B, of which there are four in number-that is, two at each end of the frameare made each with a straight outer side, b, and downwardly-tapering inner side, I), and with a shouldered upper extremity, c, of an obtuse angular configuration relatively to the tapering side I), and of a suitable depth and thickness to fit for a portion of its width on its shouldered side within the groove (6 of the side piece A to which it pertains, and so that the shoulder (I will lap .under said side piece. The legs B B, thus constructed and applied to the grooves a a in the sides A A, will firmly support said sides, and, butting at the backs of their shouldered upper portions, 0, against each other, will keep said sides A A at their proper distance apart without the aid of special end pieces to the frame; also, said legs, by the obtuse arrangement of their shouldered portions a relatively to the tapering sides I), will be properly spread apart at their base ends to give the requisite stability to the frame.
(No model.)
After the sides A A and legs B B have been fitted together, as described, screw-bolts S S their ends, to firmly secure the whole together, as shown in Fig. 2. By the fit of the shoulders d of the legs under the sides A A, the bolts S S are relieved of all superincumbent weight and strain consequent thereon.
When it is required to knock down the frame and compact it for shipment or storage, nuts 8 s on the screw-bolts S S are loosened, and the legs B B are removed from the grooves a. a and packed away, one i below the other, between the side pieces, A A, with their straight sides I) b resting a ain t the inner surfaces of said side pieces, and their taper sides I) b fitting one against the other, thus economizing all available space, and giving a compactness to the whole, after which the nuts 8 s are tightened to hold he several Parts of in Fig; 1 of the drawings.
To thus provide for compactness in storing and shipping, which is one of the more important objects of my invention, and the use of bolts for securing theknocked-down parts together, it should be observed that the legs B B must bear a certain proportion to the sides A A to be inclosed within them and between the bolts, and that the legs must be so shaped, and the sides I) b of each of them be in such angular relation with each other, that when the legs are arranged between the sides in packing away as described, the opposite outer sides, b b, of each pair of legs will be parallel with one another.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent- In a knockdown grindstone-frame, the combination of the side pieces, A A, having inner face grooves, a a, near their opposite ends, the legs B B, obliquely shouldered at their one end, a, and tapering on their inner sides, b, relatively to their outer sides, b, toward their opposite ends, and the bolts S, all as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
JULIUS B. JOHNSON.
