SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,215, dated June 30, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH H'AUSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of M angansville, in the county of \Vashington and State of Maryland, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved gate. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a perspective detailed view.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

This invention relates to swinging gates; and it has for its object to provide a device which may be conveniently operated by persons in carriages or on horseback without descending.

To this end the invention consists in the improved construction of a device by means of which the gate may be tilted, so as to cause it to open or close automatically as the case may require, substantially as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the base or sill of my improved gate. B

is the hinge-post, and C is the gate or latchpost.

D designates the gate, which may be of any suitable construction, and which is connected to the hinge-post B by means of staples E E, arranged to slide vertically upon the rods F F, which are secured to the hinge-post.

' G is a plate, arranged at the lower end of the latter and having at its front corner an upwardly-extending lug, H, forming one of the bearings for a diagonal shaft, J, supported also at the rear corner of the said plate. The said shaft is provided at its rear end with a crank, L, connected by a pivoted rod, M, with a bell-crank lever, N, which is pivoted to the side of the hinge-post. The upper end of the said bell-crank lever is connected to theopcrating-rod O, which extends forwardly and is provided with a handle, P, by means of which it may be conveniently manipulated. It will be understood, however, that operating-rods may extend in both directions from the bell-crank lever when so desired.

The diagonal shaft J carries a frame, Q, the forward portion of which is segmental in shape and beveled toward the corners R B, which are provided with upwardly-extending lugs S S. i

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of this invention will be readily understood without extended explanation. When the operating-rod is manipulated, the effect will be to tilt the frame which supports the heel of the gate, causing the latter to be tilted and to swing outwardly or inwardly, as the case may be. In this manner it will be seen that the gate may be easily either opened or closed by means of the operating-rods without necessity for actually operating or touching the gate itself.

It will be understood that a latch or closing mechanism of any suitable kind may be used when desired, and that such latch or closing mechanism may be operated automatically by means of the operating rod or rods in the act of operating the gate.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a swinging gate, the combination of the gate-post, a frame arranged at the lower end of the latter and provided with bearings fora diagonal shaft, a tilting segmental frame arranged upon the said shaft, a crank at the rear end of the latter, a bell-crank lever pivoted to the side of the gate-post, apivoted rod connecting the short arm of said lever with the arm upon the diagonal shaft,and a suitable operating rod or rods, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
