' clare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

This invention is an improvement on the hanies patented to me on July l, 1884., and numbered 303,330. It has for an object to provide convenient means by which the hames may be easily and tightly fastened; to which end it consists in the novel construction of the strap loop or keeper, and in the connecting-bar pivoted at one end to the hame, all of which will be described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a pair of hames provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view showing the strap-loop on a section of liame, and Fig. 8 is a detail edge view of the keeper.

The haines A may be of ordinary construction and connected at their upper ends in any suitable manner. The loops or keepers B are secured at the lower ends of the hames and have their outer cross-bar divided by a slot, C, usually formed at or near one end of the keeper. One extremity, b, of the cross-bar adjacent the slot C is preferably bent laterally, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, for the purpose of enlarging such slot without materially decreasing the length of the cross-bar, which forms a bearing for the fastening-strap. This opening G is preferably formed at or near the front end of the cross-bar, so that in use the strain cannot force the strap out of such opening and unfasten the hanies. The slot is also formed in this position, because by such arrangement the strap may in fastening the collar be more conveniently adjusted into the keeper. A connecting-bar, D, is pivoted at its upper end to the side of the hame, and is adapted at its other end to connect with the fastening-strap. In pivoting the bar I prefer to employ a staple, E, on the hame, and to form the bar D with an opening, F, fitted to one arm of the staple, and having a slot or cut, f, leading from such opening to the edge of the bar. I prefer this construction because by it the connection of the bar with the haine is facilitated, and such connection when formed is free and permits an easy movement of the other end of the bar. This movable end of the bar is usually provided with a strap-loop, G, as shown. By the construction of the strap loops or keepers B it will be seen that the strap may be quickly adjusted into and out of same without having to be passed therethrough. A connecting-bar, as D, may be used-,on only one or on both hames, as desired, and the peculiar construction of straploop before described may also be used on only one hame without departing from the invention.

In practice the strap H may be detachedv from the keeper D of the hanne at the rightin Fig. l, and be drawn tightly, when by means of a short bar of wood or iron or other suitable implement the strap may be moved by lever power into engagement with such keeper by which it will be held. This operation, it

will be seen, serves to tighten the strap, so

that at first it need not be drawn with such great force. By thus adjusting the strap into its final position by lever power, and by such power also giving the strap its final tightening, a mans strength is not required to properly adjust the hannes, and the latter may be applied by a Woman or boy.

The invention is simple, and will be found of great use and convenience to farmers, teamsters, and others using such devices.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. The combination of the hame provided at its lower end with an open strap loop or keeper, the connecting-bar pivoted at its upper end to the hame, and the strap secured to the lower end of the connecting-bar and adjustable into and outof the loop or keeper, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the hame, the strap -loop or keeper arranged at the lower end thereof, a staple fixed to the side of the llame,

a, connecting-bar provided at one end with a strap-loop and at its other end with an opening fitted to the staple, and with a slot or slit extended from such opening to the edge of the bar, and the strap secured in the loop of the connecting-bar and carried thence through the loop or keeper of-the llame, substantially as set forth.
