Description

DISPLAY TRAY FOR FINGER RINGS AND OTHER ARTICLES Filed June 22, 1962 J. SHIFFMAN Oct. 5, 1965 2 Sheets-Sheet l DISPLAY TRAY FOR FINGER RINGS AND OTHER ARTICLES Filed June 22, 1962 J. SHIFFMAN Oct. 5, 1965 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 United States Patent 3,209,903 DISPLAY TRAY FOR FINGER RINGS AND OTHER ARTICLES Jerome Shiifman, 128 Cartage Road, Scarsdale, NY. Filed June 22, 1962, Ser. No. 204,513 1 Claim. (Cl. 206-4513) The object of the present invention is to provide a display box, comprising a base or lowermost box member, a cover which may be reversed in position for display of articles carried thereby, special pivotal connection means between the cover and the base box member consisting of opposed swing-arms which alone connect the cover to the base member. These arms at their rear ends engage blade springs, and the relation between the arms and the cover is such that when the cover is reversed and moved to a most desired incline display position, it will be held in that position with a positive latching effect against downward movement, although it may be raised to a sharper incline and held in such position by opposed forces consisting of engagement between a lower edge wall of the cover and the inner wall of the base member, plus action by the swing arms and the blade springs.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing the article-holding cover member reversed in position and held in a suitable latch incline position, together with a sign plate and carrying shank usually employed with the article. The view is a composite one since it includes a small view of the cover member in closed positon, with an overhead representation of the sign, dotted lines leading therefrom to the slotted studs carried by the cover member and into which the shank of the sign may be inserted and held.
FIG. 2 is a bottom view of the closed structure, partly broken away, showing the sign and its shank and the horizontally slotted studs which receive the latter. This view is partly broken away.
FIG. 3 is an end elevation, partly broken away and partly in dotted lines, with the cover member in closed position.
FIG. 4 is a transverse section, through the structure of FIG. 3, showing a first movement of the cover member toward open position, the cover member being broken away at the dotted line area.
FIG. 5 is a view in full and in dotted lines showing in full lines that the cover member has been swung to the left on the pivots of the carrying frame therefor, the dotted lines showing a succeeding movement of the frame to the left, together with a swinging movement of the cover member so that it is held in latched display position.
Referring to the drawings, the base member of the display tray is a rectangular member 1 having its back wall elevated and merging into relatively raised areas I of the side walls. The base member is preferably provided with an internal cushioning layer 2, and at each end of the base member is secured a flat, bent spring 3, one end of which is secured to the base member as best shown in FIGURES 3 and 4, the spring then tapering forwardly of the base member with its curved end abutting the cushioning layer 2.
The cover member 4 and the base member 1 are preferably formed of molded plastic, and the cover member has upstanding sides 4 adapted to receive articles for display. In the present embodiment, the cover member receives a receptacle element 5 having apertures 6 to receive finger rings.
As best shown in FIG. 1, and partially by the dotted lines at 7, the side walls of the cover member have thickened areas at 7, each provided with a slot or passageway at 8, which ends at the vertical dotted lines 9, FIG.
'ice
1. Into each passageway 8 is positioned one arm 10 of of a U-shaped swing-carrier, each arm 10 being pivoted at 11 to cover member 4, and at 12 to the base member 1. The longitudinal or back element of U-shaped swingcarrier, indicated by 10 of FIG. 2, abuts the rear wall of the cover member, as best shown in FIG. 2, and when the cover member is closed. Also, this relationship continues in the first movement of the cover member towards open position, as shown in FIG. 4.
In the present embodiment, the cover member is adapted to receive the shank 14 of a sign 15, and to that end is formed with spaced studs 17 which are transversely slotted, as shown in FIG. 2, so that the shank will be moved into the slots and frictionally held. When the cover member is in display position, the sign will be moved to the position of FIG. 1.
In opening the cover member to display position, it is first raised to the point shown in FIG. 4, as it is given additional opening movement to the right with respect to the FIG. 4 position, its rear wall leaves the back element of the U-shaped swing area, and finally the cover member is brought to lie in the full line position of FIG. 5. In that position, the cover member can freely swing on the pivots 11 of arms 10. At this point the cover member is pressed and swung downwardly to the dotted line position, FIG. 5, the swing carrier moving accordingly, so that the arms 10 strike the walls at the end of the slots 8, and at the point indicated at 9, in the drawings. Thus the cover member with its display face expose-d is firmly held in the desired display position.
In restoring the cover member 2 in its initial closed position, it may be grasped at its rear end and given a bodily backward movement along with the swing carrier and until the arms of the latter are in rearward inclined position. The cover member may then be swung up towards vertical position, until its back wall is seated in the swing frame as a whole, whereupon the cover member may be moved down to closed position. The springs 3 at this point will bear upon the rear bottom edge of the cover member, and will hold the latter down onto the base member with relatively strong spring pressure imposed directly upon the longitudinal elernent 10 of the swing carrier.
It will be understood that various modifications may be made in form and arrangement of the elements constituting the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
In a display tray for jewelry, and in combination, a rectangular base member having front, back and side walls, the back wall being elevated above the front wall and merging into rearward raised areas of the side walls, a rectangular cover member having front, rear and side walls, each side wall having an intermediate thickened area with a passageway open at the base thereof, a U- shaped swing-carrier having a back area extending to the inner face of the base member back wall and having two arms, each arm being adjacent one inner face of an appropriate side wall of the base member, a pivot connecting each arm of said U-shaped swing-carrier to an appropriate raised area of a side wall of the base member, and a pivot connecting each arm to the cover member and within one of said passageways thereof, and a spring having a rear upwardly inclined area, said spring being carried by the base member and engaging at its inclined area said U-shaped swing carrier when the cover member is in closed position and engaging the area of said swing carrier intermediate its arms when the cover is raised, and holding said swing carrier in upwardly inclined posi tion, and at an angle wherein the cover member may be swung on said pivots in an arc exceeding 90 and to a position in which its face lowermost in the closed position of the cover member is brought uppermost and exposed.
