Description

( No Model.)
J. GARRARD. BEDSTEAD.
No. 320,925. Patented June, 30, 1885.
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES JEREMIAH GARRARD, OF MUNGIE, INDIANA.
BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,925, dated June 30, 1835.
Application filed March 2, 1855. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH GARRARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful In1- provement in Bedsteads, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bedsteads, and the objects of my invention are to construct and arrange devices and mechanism for securing the ends of the rails to the posts and firmly binding the bedstead together lengthwise. I attain these objects by the mech anism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view looking down from a ove a bedstead provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4: are detail views.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
To the inside of head-posts E E are secured metal fastenings a a, which are made in the form shown in Fig. 3, so that they are secured to the inside corner of the posts by screws a, all as shown in said figure. The said fastenings are each provided with a round socket, c, for receiving the ends of the roller 6. which extends across the front end of the bed, and is provided with a wrench-section, e, and ratchet c, all as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Each of the said fastenings a is provided with an outward-turned part, a having a projection, s, and slots a a, as shown in Fig. 3. The rear posts, E E, are each provided with a fasten ing, 1), made the same as the fastenings a, except the socket or cup b is made open on top and square instead of round, all as shown in Fig. 4, the said fastenings I) havings slots 1) b and projections s, and secured to the posts E by screws 1), all as shown in said figure. The
rails A A are provided at each end with two screws, i i, set in the wood a proper distance apart, so as to engage and rest in the lower part of the slots a b when the lower edge of the raiLrests on the projection or foot 8, as i11- dicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. A bar, 9, is placed across the foot of the bed, each end resting in the sockets b', as shown in Fig. 1, and a' roller, 6, is placed across the head of the bed, each end resting in the sockets a in the fastenings a. Strips f, of metal or cloth, are secured to the barg and roller 6, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and a wrench is then placed over the siX-square band 6 (or wrench section) and the roller turned over, winding the strips faround it, and being prevented from turning backward by the pawl d. The head and foot boards 13 O are drawn together, pressing the posts E E firmly against the ends of the rails A and holding them in that position, thereby forming a substantial fastening that can be kept firm and unyielding by turning the roller sufficient whenever it is necessary.
Sufficient strips f (or any other material) may be used to connect the bar and roller together so as to form a bed-bottom; but such I do not claim as my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, as follows:
A bedstead provided with fastenings a I), having slots a b, sockets a b, and projections 8, the side rails, A, bar 9, and roller 6, secured to said fastenings, and the said bar 9 and roller 0 secured together with strips f, whereby the said bedstead is firmly bound together lengthwise, snbstantiall y as and for the purpose set forth.
JEREMIAH G ARRARD.
