,HAME AND CLIP FOR HARNESS.
No. 320,600. Patented June 23, 1885 an t 0 fiwenwmfl W 61 013706; @m/L C. sigzetgol UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER STOETZEL AND FRANK O. STOETZEL, OF NEIVARK, N. J.
HAME AND CLIP FOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,600, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed February 4, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHRISTOPHER SToET- ZEL and FRANK G. S'roETzEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Im= provements in Hames and Clips for Harness; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to a certain class of hames and clips in which said parts \vheirin the harness may be arranged together and disconnected at pleasure, the object of the invention being to provide a device better adapted for the purpose than those heretofore in use.
The invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures, Figure 1 is an elevation of a clip and hame in their relative positions; Fig. 2, a back view of the same. Fig. 3-illustrates a mode of arranging the clip in position, and Fig. 4 is a view of a portion of the clip in detail.
In carrying out theinvention we form upon the hooked or bent extremity a of the clip a lug, 1), adapted to pass through an opening, 0, of the draft-eye (1, said lug projecting from the side of the clip to engage the under side of said draft-eye and hold the parts together, as will be understood upon reference to Fig. 2. The said openingin the draft-eye is round when viewed from the front, as in Fig. 1,to secure the greatest strength in the draft-eye and present to view the best finish, and is provided on the under side with an offset, 0, to said opening to enable the clip end, which is nearly the size of the opening, and the lug to beinserted and properly arranged into con nection with the draft-eye.
By inserting the clip extremity into the opening, the lug entering first and passing under into the rear offset, and then turning the clip to bring it in line with the draft-eye, as in Fig. 1, the parts are held securely together; but to provide against any accidental detachment we may secure a pivotal plate, f,
upon the back of the draft-eye, adapted to cover the offset and prevent the lug from entering, the said plate or piece being providcd with a finger-piece, g, which, when the clip is locked projects beyond the edge of the draft-eye and allows said plate to be easily turned away from said offset preliminary to removing the clip.
I am aware that it is not, broadly, new to provide a draft-eye with a clip perforation or eye round on the outer face and having an offset at the under side of said draft-eye, such a construction being shown in Patent No.287,954; but in this case no separable clip is provided formed with a laterally-projecting lug, at the extremity of the hooked portion thereof, whereby the said clip may be passed through the said round hole and held in engagement with the draft-eye.
\Vhat we claim as new is 1. The combination, with the hame provided with a draft-eye having a round opening and rear offset, e, and pivoted locking- -plate f, of a clip having the bent extremity provided with the lug b, substantially as set forth and shown.
2. In combination, a hame provided with a draft-eye the clipeye or opening in which is provided with a regular unindented or unbroken edge at the outer face of the draft-eye, but at the under or inner face broken or indented by an offset, 0, which extends but partly through the said drafteye, as shown, and a clip bent at the end in the form of a hook, and having on one side a laterally-project-ing lug to engage the under side of said drafteye, said parts being arranged and combined substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 28th day January,
CHRISTOPHER S'IOETZEL. FRANK O. STOETZEL. Witnesses:
