UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. SHERWOOD, OF PLAINWELL, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN W. GILKEY, OF SAME PLACE.
J EWELERS DUST-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,593, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed March 28, 1885.
To all whom, it pea/y concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES A. SHERWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainwell, county of Allegan, State of Michigen, have invented anew and useful Jewelers Dust-Box, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object certainimprovements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, forming a part of this specification,is she. n a perspective view of my new dust-box, parts being broken away, showing the internal construction and arrangement.
The wall inclosures of the box are shown at I 5 B B, representing four sides. The other two sides opposite to each other are provided with covers D D, connected to the box by hinges a (t, or otherwise, as desired. If preferred, the bOX may be provided with sliding covers running in grooves in the common manner. The doors are preferably made with a portion of them glass, 0, or otherwise transparent, so as to see the contents.
The box is separated into two or more com- 2 5 partments by the partition I, the larger co1npartment being for large pieces of jewelry such as the case and large parts of a watchand the smaller compartment being designed for small pieces, such as the wheels and small parts of the running mechanism, of a watch, which might be injured by contact with the larger parts if all were in a single compartment. These compartments are centrally divided by a perforated partition, F, or grate of 3 5 any suitable nature. The partition F in the drawing consists of a metal plate provided with holes 0 c.
Sawdust or any like material commonly used by jewelers for drying the jewelry is shown at R.
The doors D D may be fastened during the operation by any suitable catch, the latter not here shown.
The importantpeculiarity of my box as contrasted with dust-boxes heretofore used consists in the two compartments, having the central perforated partition for containing and treating undera single operation thelarge and small pieces of mechanism or j ewelry separated from each other.
(No model.)
In the operation, the parts of mechanism which the jeweler has cleaned, and which he desires to dry by agitating them in sawdust, are placed in the large and small compartments, together with the sawdust, above the perforated plate or partition F. Then by shaking the box the sawdust sifts through the perforations c a, leaving the jewelry exposed and dry, ready to be removed from the box. When using the box again,it is turned the other side up, and the jewelry placed among the sawdust through the other door, which will then be uppermost.
A packing may used between thebox and the covers to insure a tight joint to prevent the escape of the fine sawdust. This in most cases will not be needed.
In the drawingstrips of rubber Vareshown embedded in the edges of the walls B B and the partition I, said rubber strips extending a little above the edges, so that the covers D will press upon them when closed, thus forming a packing.
I-Iavin g thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 7 5 Patent, is-
1. Ajewelersdust;boxhaving separate compartments for different pieces of jewelry, said compartment-s being provided with a central perforated partition and with suitable covers, substantially as set forth.
2. Ajewelers dust-box having separate compartments for different pieces of jewelry, two opposite sides of the box being provided with transparent inclosures, substantially as set forth.
3. Ajewelersdustboxhavingseparatec0mpartments, doors or covers to said compartments, a packing between the doors and the wall inclosures, and a partition between the 0 compartments, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of the foregoing I have hereunto subseribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. SHERWOOD.

JOHN W. GILKEY, Gno. D. B. IIALL.
