UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL MOHENRY, OF SPAR-TA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER AND EGG PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 215,953, dated May 27, 1879; application filed March 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MoHENRY, of Sparta, in the county of Randolph and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Butter and Egg Packages, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a front view of my improved package, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail top view of a part of an egg-drawer. Fig. 4 is a detail top view of one of the small inner butter-packages. Fig. 5 is a detail crosssection of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved package for carrying butter and eggs, either together or separately, which shall be so constructed as to carry the said articles safely, and prevent them from being tainted and spoiled by being carried through, or allowed to stand in, an impure air, and which at the same time shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention consists in. an air-tight and water proof butter and egg package with drawers and intervaled strips, having longitudinal recesses in the edge, as hereinafter described.
A represents the body of the package, which is made in the form of a rectangular box, of any desired and convenient size. The box A is made with a close bottom, top, back, and ends, and with an open front.
In grooves in all the joints of the box A is placed rubber or other suitable packing, B, so that no air can pass through the said joints. The open front of the box A is closed. by the side or door a, which is hinged at its lower edge to the forward edge of the bottom of the said box.
The door a is provided with rubber or other suitable packing, B, at its side and end edges, so that when closed its joints may be air-tight. The whole box is further secured against the entrance of air and moisture by being thoroughly coated with a rubber or oil paint.
The door a is secured in place, when closed,
by screws 0, which pass through the end parts of the said door: a and into nuts secured in the forward edges of the ends of the box A, and by screws 0, passing through the forward part of the top of the box A, and into nuts secured in the upper edge of the door a, so as to compress the packing and make every joint air-tight.
To the inner surfaces of the ends of the box A are attached cleats a or in them are formed grooves at such a distance apart as to leave space for and fit closely against the upper and lower edges of the sides of the drawers D, and prevent the said drawers from having any play when in place.
The bottoms of the drawers D are formed of slats d, which should have sufficient spring to allow them to yield should the package be dropped or roughly handled, and thus prevent breakage.
WVhen the drawers D are to be used for carrying eggs, the upper sides of the adjacent edges of the spring-slats (1 should have oblong circular recesses formed in them to receive the eggs and keep them in place'while being carried.
When the drawers are to be used for carrying butter, the butter is packed in small packages, E, which may be made of wood, pasteboard, glass, or earthenware. When the packages E are made of wood or pasteboard, they should be lined with a waterproof lining of some suitable material. The packages E are made with their sides projecting below their bottoms, as shown in Fig. 5, so that only the lower edges of the said sides will rest upon the spring-slats (1, allowing the air to circulate beneath their bottoms.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A butter or egg package whose drawers D have elastic strips with recessed edges, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
SAMUEL MCHENRY.
