Description

L. KAPLAN Aug. 24, 1965 COMPARTMENTED BAG Filed April 1, 1963 FIG. I
FIG.2
INVENTOR. LOUIS KAPLAN United States Patent 3,202,191 COMPARIMENTED BAG Louis Kaplau, 277 Fullerton Ave, Newburgh, N.Y. Filed Apr. 1, 1963, Ser. No. 269,669 3 Claims. (Cl. l '30) The present invention relates to a compartmented handbag and especially to a relatively large size soft and pliable-walled, compartmented handbag of a type wherein each compartment is provided with an individual, differently located opening.
Compartmented handbags with each compartment having an individual openinghave heretofore been known. However, such prior art handbags generally comprise a main handbag portion, and an auxiliary compartment formed by a common wall secured to the sides of the main bag portion so that the capacities of the main bag portion and of the auxiliary compartment are substantially fixed and limited.
It is a primary object of the present invention to provide a compartmented handbag, of the type described, in which the auxiliary compartment is of a capacity that is limited substantially only by the overall size of the bag itself and may be even greater than the capacity of the principal bag portion.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a compartmented bag of a character described, in which the auxiliary compartment, as well as the main bag compartment may be varied in size and capacity to receive and hold varied loads.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a compartmented bag, of the character described, in which the auxiliary compartment may also be varied in shape to accommodate articles of varying height and thickness, not limited to the normal height of the auxiliary bag.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a bag of the character described which in addition to its great utility and convenience is of highly ornamental appearance.
It is a still further object of the present invention to provide a compartmented bag, of the character described, which is of light Weight, which may be compacted when not in use and is of relatively simple and economical construction.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the compartmented bag of the present invention, will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawings and from the description following. It is to be understood, however, that such embodiment is shown by way of illustration only to make the principles and practice of the invention more readily comprehensible and without any intent of limiting the invention to the specific details therein shown.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of one embodiment of a handbag of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and
FIG. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the handbag on an enlarged scale taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
Referring now in greater detail to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, same is shown to comprise outer bag portion generally designated as Iii. Such outer bag may be formed by one or more sections of preferably soft and pliable, preferably ornamental woven or plastic fabric, to provide the tubular wall 12 and the bottom wall 141. The tubular body may be of any desired cross-section, as circular, oval, or substantially oblong, as illustrated and may be formed in any desired manner, from one or more sections of fabric or material. If desired the bottom portion 15 of the bag may be formed of a fabric or material of different character in appearance than the upper portion thereof.
Tubular wall 12 is provided along a peripheral portion thereof, as in portion 15, preferably parallel to its top edge, and preferably closer to its bottom than to its top edge, with an opening 16 which may be provided with closure means such as the slide fastener 18.
Suspended within the bag 10 and secured thereto at or adjacent to its edge, is a sack 2t) whichmay be formed of any suitable, preferably pliable, material or fabric. The sack 20 may be of a diameter, at its opening, equal to the diameter of the bag It) at its opening and may be secured by its edge, in any suitable desirable way, as by stitching 22 to the bag 10. The sack 20 may be formed of one or more sections of fabric or material and may be of a length reaching the level of the opening 16, or, if desired, longer than that.
The bag 10 may be provided with a closure over its top opening as in the form of the flap, 26, which is secured by one end thereof, to the edge of the bag 10, at one side, and may be provided with latching means which is engageable with cooperating latching means 28 on the side of the bag 10, opposite to the point of its engagement thereto. The bag 10 may also be provided with conventional loop type handles 30.
This completes the description of the compartmented bag of the present invention. It will be readily apparent that the bag of the invention provides numerable conveniences for the user. Thus it permits a user to segregate various articles which may be desirable for various purposes on different occasions. It may permit, for instance, the carrying of such articles of apparel as shoes or overshoes separately from other articles with a view of keeping such other articles from becoming soiled by such shoes or overshoes. It also permits a user to have access to different articles carried in one of the compartments without disturbing articles in the other compartment, to thereby save the users time and :serve her convenience. It also permits substantially unlimited capacity in the auxiliary, side opening, compartment by merely pushing up the bottom of the sack 20 to the extent desired and likewise permits the carrying of articles in the auxiliary compartment against the Wall of the outer bag which may be of a height limited only by the length of the outer bag.
It will also be apparent that numerous modifications and variations may be made in the compartmented bag of the present invention, by anyone skilled in the art, in accordance with the principles of the invention hereinabove set forth and without the exercise of any inventive ingenuity. I desire, therefore, to be protected for any and all such modifications and variations that may be made within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims hereto appended.
What I claim is:
1. A compartmented bag, comprising an outer, pliable tubular body, open at its top and closed at its bottom, said tubular body having a circumferentially disposed opening formed in the wall thereof along a portion of its periphery, in spaced relation to said bottom wall, forming a compartment below said opening, and a pliable-walled,
foldable sack suspended by the marginal edge portions of its opening, within said tubular body and secured to said body at the opening thereof.
7 2. The compartmented bag of claim 1, wherein closure means are provided for the opening of said tubular body. 3. The compartmented bag of claim 1, wherein the inner end of said sack is approximately level with said circumferential opening.
