nurse STATES -ATENT CLOSET FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
:BPECIFICATION To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosEPH SCHAEFER, of Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closets for Railway- Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved closet for railway-cars, by which the annoying upward draft through the closet is prevented, and a warm and comfortable closet obtained.
The invention consists of a closet for railwayears, formed of a double-walled cylindrical body having an upward hopper with a balanced valve at the lower end, and a lower hopper, also provided with a balanced valve. The valves of both hoppers are made hollow and provided with openings in the bottom wall, their tubular pivots being connected with the space between the double-walled body, so that hot airpasses through the valves and keeps the entire closet warm.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved closet for railway-cars. Figs. 2 and 3 are horizontal sections, respectively, on lines and y y, Fig. 1; and Figs. 4 and 5 are bottom views of the valves, respectively, of the upper and lower hoppers of the closet.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the doublewalled cylindrical or other body of my improved closet for railway-cars. The walls of the body A are connected by east-metal stays a. a,whereby strength and rigidity are imparted to the body. The seat B is made of wood, and connected to a porcelain-lined metallic hopper, C, at the upper part of the body A. A second porcelain-lined hopper, D, is arranged at the lower part of the body A. The upper hopper, O, is provided at its lower end. with a hinged and counterbalanced valve, 0, that opens as soon as any matter is dropped thereon. The lower hopper, D, is also provided with a valve, D, which is made of two semisections, that are pivoted at opposite sides of the body, each being balanced by a counterweight in the same manner as theupper valve,

C. valve-seats at the lower ends of the hopper C and D by means of arubber packing, a. The valves 0 and 1) are made, hollow, the under side being perforated. They are hinged by tubular pivots (l d to the double-walled body A. A valved hot-air pipe, E, connecls the double-walled body A with the car-heater, so that in the wintertime hot air from the latter is conveyed into the space between the walls of the body A, and through the tubular pivots d (1 into the hollow Valves 0 D, and thence through the bottom openings of the same to the outside.
\Vhen using the closet, the upper valve is opened when anything is dropped thereon, and
then discharged immediately on the lower" valve, which is thereby opened, so as to drop the matter to the outside. \Vhenever the upper Valve is discharging, the lower valve is closed, while when the lower valve is discharging the upper valve is closed, so that no cold air can pass up through the closet.
By supplying hot air to the closet the same is kept comfortably warm, so as to prevent the water and other deposits from freezing onto the valves and clogging the same thereby.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A closet for railway-ears, consisting of a double walled body, a hopper, a doublewalled and counterbalanced valve at the bottom of the hopper, said valve having openings in the bottom, and a tubular pivot. co1nmunicating with the space between the walls of the body, so that a current of warm air is conducted through the valve, substantially as set forth.
2. I11 a closet for railway-cars, the combination of the double-walled body, an upper hopperhaving a pivoted and counterbalanced valve at its lower end, and a lower hopper having a pivoted and counterbalanced valve, both valves being hollow and connected by tubular pivots with the space between the walls of the body, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a double -walled body, a valved hot-air pipe connecting the body with the ear-heater,au upper hopper h av- The valves 0' D close tightly against the c ing a pivoted and counterbalanced valve, and my invention I have signed my name in presa lower hopper having a pivoted and counterence of two subscribing witnesses.
balanced valve, said valves being made hol- JOSEPH SOHAEFER. low and provided with tubular pivots and \Vitnesses:
5 openings in their bottom walls, substantially PAUL GOEPEL,
as set forth. SIDNEY MANN.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
