Description

` l. P. CHRISVTENSEN. Buckets for Windlass Waiter-Elevators."
No. 346,315. Patentedlamisilajy" Ttn lssezs A i Mya/ /Mfdwywy UNITED STATES JOHN I?. OHRISTENSEN, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKEFS FOR WINDLASS WATEREI'.EVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,315, dated January 13, 1874 application iilt d June 17,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. P. GnRIsTENsEN, of San Diego city and county, State ot' California, have invented Improvements in `Water Elevators; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suflicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to Which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further inventionv or experiment.
My invent-ion relates to an improved bucket, to be used in connectionv with that class of water-elevators in which two or more buckets are attached to an endless chain, and the chain operated by a pulley to raise and lower the buckets.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of one of the buckets. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing a section of one of the buckets. v
A represents a bucket, having one side attached to a chain, b. The end o of this bucket is constructed in the manner of an inclined plane, as shown, thus making the side d, opposite the cha-in b, longer than the side to which the chain is attached. The side is open at f, opposite the inclined end piece, as shown, so as to provide an opening through which the bucket is filled and emptied, the inclined end serving as a spout to direct the water when the bucket is being emptied. Atube, e, which can either be attached to the bucket or form a xed part of it, extends from the lower` or square end of the bucket up over the end of the side d, and thence down inside of the bucket to near the bottom. The opposite ends l of this tube are open, and a hole-7 t, is made through it at the point where it bends over the end d, so as to prevent itfrom acting as a siphon, and thus emptying the bucket before it is intended to be emptied. The object of this tube is to allow the air to escape from the interior of the bucket when it is being filled otherwise the air in the vessel would prevent the entrance of the water, and the bucket i claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
s The bucket A, constructed as described, in
combination with the pipe e, having hole fz'-, as
and for the piupose set forth.
In witness whereof, l hereunto set my hand and seal. JOHN PETER GHRISTENSEN. [L. s]
