MACHINE FOR MAKING HEELS FOR LADIES SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,164, dated June 16,1885.
Application filed January 17, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDERIOH ORTLEPP, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Making Heels for Ladies Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in machines for making that class of heels for ladies shoes which consist of a leather shell provided with a filling, the said machine being used for shaping the shell and compressing the filling in the same.
The invention consists in a die having a recess or cavity shaped the same as the heel, and extending from the top to the bottom of the die, and having its front end open, the front end of which cavity can be closed by a piece secured on a cross-piece, and having its inner face shaped the same as the front of the heel.
The invent-ion also consists in the construction of parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved machine for making heels and side view of the top plate. Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe same, the top platebeing removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of the top plate. Fig. at is aplan view of the leather blank for making the heel. Fig. 5 is a front view of the heel.
The metal die A is provided with a cavity or recess, B, extending entirely through the die from the top to the bottom, and open at the front end, the said cavity decreasing in width and in length from the top to the bottom, andbeing shaped the same as the heel for a ladys shoe. Various shapes are given to the heels for ladies shoes, and the shape of the cavity or recess must be varied according to the shape of the heel to be produced.

the same as the front of the heel, and the said piece 0 is secured on the inner surface of a U- shaped cross-piece, D, having dowels E, which are passed into apertures in the front end of the die A, the bentcnds of the piece D resting against the sides of the die A. The bottom plate F is held on the die by dowel-pins projecting upward from the plate F into the bottom of the die A, and the uppersurface of the said bottom plate is inclined more or less, according to the desired inclination of the bot tom of the heel.
Into the cavity B a metal die, G, lits,whieh is of precisely the same shape as the cavity, but smaller.
The top plate, H, is provided with dowels J, which are passed into apertures K in the top of the die A, and the said top plate H is provided on its under surface with a projection, L, the plan of which is the same as the plan of the top of the cavity or recess B. The under side of the projection L is rounded transversely and longitudinally about the same as the heel part of the foot.
The blank M, from which the heel is made, is provided with a curved edge, a,which forms the top edge of the heel. At the sides opposite the middle of the curve a it is provided with two tongues, b, separated bya V-shaped recess, c, and between the tonguesb and the end tongues, h, tongues d are formed, which are separated from the tongues I) by V-shaped recesses g. The blank M can be made of calfskin or any other suitable kind of leather, which, however, must not be too thin.
The operation is as follows: The blank M is thoroughly soaked in water, so as to become very soft and pliable. The blank M is placed in the cavity B of the die A in such a manner that the rounded edge a is along the curved top edge of the cavity B, and then the heeldie G is placed upon the leather, as shown in Fig. 1. The two tongues Z) are folded over on the bottom of the heel-die G until their inner edges come in contact, and thus form the bottom of the heel-shell. The tongues d and the corners h of the blank are folded toward each other to form the front of the heel. The recesses {1 form a diamondshaped opening in the front of the heel. The bottom plate, F, is placed against the bot-tom of the die A, and the top plate, H, is placed on the die, and then the cross-piece D is placed on the front of the die in such a manner that the inner surface of the piece 0 presses against the front of the heel. The die is then placed in a suitable press, by which the top and bottom plates and the cross-piece D are pressed firmly against the die A, whereby the leather between the die G and the die A, the piece 0, and the bottom plate, F, is shaped to form a hollow heel or shell of the same general exterior shape as the cavity B and of the same interior shape as the die G. The shell thus formed is filled with gutta-percha pressed into it or with a wooden heel covered with gutta-percha, or the heel can be filled with any other suitable material which hardens and is not heavy. One or more lifts or metal plates are secured to the bottom of the heel. The projecting part L on the under surface of the plate H is used to press the cavity in the top of the filling of the heel, so that the said heel will fit well against the sole, which is recessed at the middle to fit against the foot.
It will be observed that the die or mold A is formed of one single piece, whereas hereto-' I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a machine for shaping leather-heel shells, the combination, with the die A, having a recess or cavity, B, shaped the same as the heel, of the die G, having its exterior surface shaped the same as the exterior of the heel, and the removable cross-piece D, providcd with the piece 0, fitting in the front end of the'cavity or recess B in the die A, and having its inner surface shaped the same at the front of the heel, substantially as herein shown and described. I
2. Ina machine for shaping leather-heel shells, the combination, with the die A, having. the recess or cavity B, shaped the same as the heel and extending from top to bottom, of the bottom plate, F, having a beveled upper surface, and the cross-piece D, provided with a piece, 0, fitting in the front end of the recess or cavity, and having its inner surface shaped the same as the front of the heel, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a machine for making heels, the combination, with the die A, provided wit-h a recess or cavity shaped the same as the heel, of the cross-piece D, having apiece, O, fitting in the front end of the recess or cavity and having its inner surface shaped the same as the front of the heel, the bottom plate, F, and the top plate, H, provided on its under side with the projection L, shaped the same as the top of the heel, substantially as herein shown and described.
