HEEL FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
No. 276,279. Patented Apr. 2-4, 1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC SAMUEL PRIOR, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
HEEL FORBOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION "forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,279, dated April 24, 1883.
Application filed Felmiary 2, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, SAMUEL PRIOR, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Trenton, in
the county of Mercer and State'of New Jersey,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heels for Boots and Shoes, and in the art or process of making the same, of which the following is a specification.
Heretofore heelsfor boots and shoes have been made of leather, being built up by successive lifts,'or of metal or composition cast in one solid piece. The leather heels thus built up are expensive in both labor and material, while the'metal or composition heels are oh- I 5 jectionable, as they do not present the appear- Figure 1 shows my heel. It is the same in shape and outward appearance as the ordinary leather heel. Fig. 2 shows a heel cut in section. In Fig. 2, A is the outer surface of the heel, and B is the inner filling. The heel is composed of this outer surface or covering of leather, filled with leather-scrap and cement, or am suitable material, pressed into shape in a die mold ofthe requisite size and shape.
To make one of these 'heels,I first provide (No model.)
a mold or die of the proper form. Within this I place a piece of leather of such size and shape that it will line the bottom and sidesof the die. I then fill in the space within such lining with leather-scrap and cement, or any suitable material. Over this I then fold down the upper portions of the piece of leather which lines I lay over such filling another piece of leather of the contour of the heel. I then apply a heavy pressure to the mold or die thus charged, and the whole is compacted into one solid mass. On releasing it from the mold or die the piece first placed in the mold will be found to have taken the exact shape of the mold, and the composition fully fills it, thus making a heel, as shown at Fig. 2, composed of an outer skin, A, of leather, with an interior filling, B, of any suitable material. The same operation also shapes the heel ready for use.
Whatl claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'-- That art or process of forminga boot or shoe heel which consists in lining a die or mold of the proper form with apiece of leather, placing within the leather a filling of leather-scrap and cement, or any suitable material, and then subjecting the same to pressure, thereby shaping and compacting the same, substantially as described.
SAMUEL PRIOR.
