DISPLAY-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,122, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed September 26, 1984.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILBUR B. FOSTER, of Rockville, in the county of Tolland and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, where Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of my improved frame. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical central section of the frame on plane denotedby line 0'0 x of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are side views of the frame, illustrating several of the positions in which the frame may be placed.
My invention relates to the class of devices adapted for use in storewindows and like places for the purpose of holding and display ing in any desired position articles offered for sale.
My invention consists in certain details of the construction of the frame and its parts and in the combination of those parts, as more particularly hereinafter described.
111 the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes the standards of the device, and b the jointed frame that is hinged to the top of the standards, and across the frame and the standards are supported rods 0, on which the goods may be hung or to which any device for holding articles may be fastened. Each standard is preferably made up of several jointsvof me tallic tubing arranged so as to slide one within the other in such manner that the frame may be placed at any desired height within the play of the telescoping joints, and any suitable form of clamp, a, may be used to hold the joints in the desired position. The frame I) is made up of side bars, I). The cross-rods c are supported on the side bars and are fastened to them by means of clamp-screws. The side bars of this frame extend through socketpieces (I, that are supported on the top of each standard, so that the frame when considered as a whole may be set so as to extend across the standard, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.
The side bars, I), of the frame are movably held in the socket-pieces (1, each of which is (No model.)
hinged to the upper end of the respective standards in such manner that the frame as a whole may be set in a plane at any angle with the vertical plane of the standards. The pivot on which the sock et-picce hinges bears a clamping-nut, d, by means of which the frame may be held at the desired angle, and the clampscrew d serves to hold the side bar of the frame in any desired position within the limit of the longitudinal play ofthe bar in the sock et-picce. Each side bar is jointed at one or more points along its length, so that it may bend forward or back at an angle with the rest of the frame, an d each joint is provided with a clamp similar to that already described for fixing the parts of the frame at the desired angle with each other. The cross-rods c are supported in sockets in the sliding supports or bearers 6, each of which bears a CLLIIIP'SGIOW, e, for grasping and holding the rod 0, when desired, and each bearer also has another clamp-screw, e, for fixing its position on the bar, and the standards a are also provided with the sliding bearers, which have clampserews, and which also serve to support the crossrods. By clamping the cross-rods c in the bearings 0 upon each of the side bars the whole frame is stiffened and rendered firm against any sidewise pressure on the frame.
The frame I) is also provided with an extensible section, If, the parts being connected by a yokedevice, f, which is made up of the crosspiate f, fast to the bottom of the rod-section b and to the rods f that lie one on each side of the center rod and slide through holes in the cross-plate 1, that is fast to the lower end of the upper section of the side bar, and the crossplate f, that is fast to the rods f and slides on the side bar. The plate f bears a clampscrew, P, by means of which the yoke may be clamped at any point of its slide play on the side bar. This particular means for providing for the extension, however, is not essential, as the side bars may be made in sliding sections that telescope, as in the case of the standards 5 neither is the device limited to the cylindrical form of the parts making up the standards and frame, as tubes or rods of any other outline in cross-section may be used to effect the same purpose, and the sections of the standards may be slotted or grooved to provide for the passage of guide-pins that pre vent the rotation of the intro-sliding parts and serve to render the frame as a whole stiffer and less liable to sway.
The standards are provided with feet or broadened bases a which may be secured to the floor by means of nails or screws, and when the standards are thus secured the frame may be adjusted and held in a vertical plane, as shown in Fig. 2; or it may be bent so that part of its length is at an angle with its standards and the rest is in a vertical plane, as shown in Fig. 4; or the frame may be fastened at a considerable angle from thevertical with its parts all in one plane or bent so as to slope downward on opposite sides of the plane of the standards.
On any one of the cross-bars c-as theupperremovable hat-supports 9 may be clamped, and the frame, equipped as described, may be readily adjusted to hold a largely varied class of goods, and may be adjusted to fit windows of different depths, or in positions where the space as to vertical and horizontal extent is limited.
Any desired number of standards and side bars may be used, and the frame may be made up to any width, depending on the length of the cross bars used.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a display-frame, in combination, the standards a, the jointed frame I), hinged to the upper part of the standards and extending across the latter through socket-pieces cl,with
3. In a display-frame, in combination, the
extensible standards a, having clamp-screws a, the extensible frame b, with hinged joints extending across the top of the standards and borne by the hinged socket-pieces d, that have clamp-screws d and dfland the cross-bars c,held by the adjustable supports 6, having clamp screws 6 c, all substantially as described.
4. In a display-frame, in combination, the extensible frame I), having the hinged side bars that are adj nstably supported in socketpieees attached to the top of standards and extend across the latter, the hinged socketpieees bearing clamp-screws, the standard, and the cross-bars, all substantially as described.
