Description

W. S. MGLEWEE.
LAMP.
No. 320,081 Patented June 16, 1885.
\VILLIAM S. \IOLEXVEE, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
LAMP.
QPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,081, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed June 9, 1884.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, XVILLIAM S. MeLEwEn, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
I will describe a lamp embodying my improvement, and then point out the various features in a claim.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional elevation of a lamp embodying my improvement.
A designates a hanger, which may be of any suitable style. It is provided with a loop, a, whereby it may be connected with a ceiling or other support. It also has pulleys b. The lower part, B, of thelamp consists, essentially, of a body, 0, arms d, extending therefrom, and holderseforoil-reservoirs O. Chains or cords D extends from the arms (I up over the pulleys b of the hanger and thence down to a counterbalance weight, E. The body 0 of the lower part, B, of the lamp is hollow and contains a fan, G, and a motor, H, for pro pelling the fan. Preferably, the said body 0 will be made of two sections, the lower of which will be detaehably secured to the upper by screws or otherwise. In such case the lower section will have the motor and fan secured in it. By detaehingitthe cleaning and repairing of the parts which it contains will be facilitated.
The motor H consists of a spring contained in a suitable barrel, and secured at one end to the barrel and at the other end to a shaft extending through the barrel. This shaft is held against turning, except in one direction, for the purpose of winding the spring, by a ratchet and pawl, in a wellknown manner. The barrel is rotated by the spring and is provided with a gear-wheel from which motion is imparted to a train of wheels of any suitable kind. The fan is mounted on one of the shafts of the train of wheels. A stop, 8, consisting of a lever fulerumed at about the middle and having one end adapted to engage with one of the train of gear-wheels and the other end protruding through the body a may (No model.)
be used. Then, whenever the train of wheels is desired to be stopped, this lever may be manipulated so as to engage with its gearwheel. At other times it will be disengaged therefrom. The body 0 below the fan is perforated to admit air. The arms (I are hollow and communicate with the body 0 at one end and at the other end with the holders 6 for the oil-reservoirs C. These holders 0 are also hollow and are considerably larger than the oil-reservoirs. The oil-reservoirs are socured to covers for the holders 0, and are suspended thereby. Air, put in motion by the fan, passes from the body 0 to the arms (I, thence to the holders 0, and thence through the air-distributers or draft-plates of burners g, mounted on the oil-rescrvoirs. On the burners are mounted globes it. No chimney need be used. The oil-reservoirs may be removed from the holders 0 at pleasure. Over the body 0 is mounted a device, I, which may be another oil-reservoir provided with a burner and the ordinary appurtenances or a mere ornament. It may be wholly or partly detachable from the holder. Its under side is made in the form of an inverted cone, to form a spreader for deflecting the air put in motion by the fan into the arms (1. Any number of the arms (l and their appurtenances may of course be used.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a lamp, of a body having openings near one end, a fan arranged within the body for forcing air to the openings, a motor for operating the fan, a spreader above the fan, hollow arms extending out wardly from the body, and lamp'reservoir holders supported at the outer ends of said arms, said arms forming passages through which air may pass from the fan to the burners, which are arranged on the reservoir at the open top of the holders, substantially as specified.
