ATENT BENJAMIN J. LESLIE, OF BUTLER, KY.,
ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
SHOVEL-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.320,074, dated June 16,1885.
Application filed June 9, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. LESLIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, Pendleton county, Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in ShovelPlows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shovel-plows; and it consists of an improved construction of the sheth or standard and its connection with the draft-bar, handles, and shovel or plowshare, its object being to form a light, durable, strong and economic construction of these parts. For this purpose I use for the sheth a casting with a flattened head, suitably formed for attachment to the under side of the draft-bar and pierced with a slot for the passage of the colter. The foot of the casting is shaped for the attachment of the handles on either side of a central rib, and for the attachment of the share or shovel, as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawings, where similar letters refer to similar parts, Figure l represents a perspective view of a shovelplow complete of my improved construction; Fig. 2, a detached view on a larger scale of the sheth, showing the connection of the handles thereto, with part of the shovel removed to show the attachment of the latter to the sheth. Fig. 3 is a section taken on a plane, ab, (in Fig. 2,) showing in further detail the manner of connecting handles to sheth, and Fig. 4 is a detached view of part of draft-bar, showing a modified form of the connection of sheth thereto when the plow is designed to be used in hard ground, or as a two-horse plow, as hereinafter more fully described.
The draft-bar A, clevis B, colter O, handles D D, and shovel E are of the usual 0 .nstruction, and require no detailed description.
I use for the sheth F a casting with lateral strengthening-rib f, thicker in line of draft than in the direction at right angles thereto, and having a flattened upper part, V, pierced with a rectangular slot to admit the head of the eolter O, and with holes for the passage of bolts (1 d. The lower part is constructed with the recessed sides divided by a central rib, g. In the former lie the two handles D D, clamped against the dividingrib g by a bolt,
(No mod e1.)
6, and further held in place by the piece m, forming the bottom of the recessed spaces. The extension-piece H, to which the shovel E is secured, is pierced with a rectangular slot, h, widest next the blade of the shovel, aud in fastening the shovel to it I first provide a wedge of wood grooved next the boltz' to allow its free passage and of such size that when the bolt 17, which is permanently attached to the blade of the shovel, is inserted int-o the slot h and the nut screwed home it will completely fill the hole, wedging the bolt firmly against the side 8 of the wedge-shaped hole, as shown in Fig. 2, the object being to form a firm connection which shall not be absolutely rigid and unyielding, but shall have sufficient elasticity to receive without injury shocks and sudden strains to which this part of a plow is peculiarly liable from striking stones or roots in plowing.
In order to hold more securely the shovelblade or plowshare E in position, I may provide a set-screw, (not shown in the drawings,) threaded in the end of shoulder or extensionpiece H, immediately under the shovel-blade E, which upon being screwed in the proper direction forces the wedgeblock filling the slot h more firmly against the bolt 1', which holds the shovel-blade in its place on the ex tension piece or shoulder H.
For use in hard ground, or when I desire to use two horses attached to the plow, I may modify the attachment of sheth to draft-bar (shown in Fig. 2) to the form indicated in Fig. 4, in which, instead of using two screwbolts, d d, (shown in Figs. 1 and 2,) I form an angle-block, t, 011 the top plate, pierced with slot for the passage of the wedge-pin c and grooved to allow the yoke d to pass over its upper surface. I. further provide the fiattened portion of the sheth V with lugs k, to form abutting plates, through which pass the threaded ends of the yoke (1. Upon supplying the nuts and screwing them home the sheth and the top plate are firmly fastened to the draft-bar. In addition, I use the bolt d,
as previously shown, and further provide the rib or tenon piece 1', to be mortised into the under surface of the draft-bar, preventing any lateral motion.
The advantage of this form. of connection to hold the parts more firmly together, since it tends to push the upper plate forward, increase the strain in the yoke d, and consequently clamp the'sheth' moreifirm'ly against the draftbar.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shovel plow with a cast sheth having a flattened head suitable for attachment to under side of draft-bar, and having a rectangular slot therein'for the" passage of the colter, in combination with the handles D D, at-
tached to the foot of sheth, lying within recesses in the latter, and the shovel-blade E, secured to a shoulder or extension-piece H, at the foot of the sheth,substantia1ly as described.
2. In a shovel-plow, the combination, with a cast sheth carrying the shovel-blade and handles attached thereto, as described, and having aflattened head adapted to receive the ends of a stirrup bolt or yoke, d, and with rib or tenon piece r, of an upper plate having an angle-block, 21', formed thereon, adapted for the passage of colter O and insertion of wedge-pin c, and further adapted to receive the curved loop of the yoke 01, and the yoke d, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
BENJAMIN- J; LESLIE. Witnesses:
