TRUNK LOCK.
V\VILLIAM P. ADAMS, OF KENNEIUNK, MAINE.
TRUNK-LOCK.
Application led February 171 ISST.
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM l?. ADA-tits, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kennebunk, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Locks; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a lock adapted more especially for use upon trunks, boxes, &c.; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, effective and positive in its operation, and one that will be strong and durable.
\Vith these ends in view the invention consists in th-e combination, with a suitable plate, of a revolnble casing carrying locking mechanism, said casing being adapted to engage a keeper.
The invention further consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed outiu the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a trunk-lock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal vertical section. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent in detail the keeper, the casing carrying the locking mechanism, and the platein which the saine moves.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the tign res, A represents a plate, which is provided with holes or openings for the passage of screws or equivalent fastenings for its attachment. rIlhis plate A is provided with an opening, a., circular in form, and open at its upper end, as at b. The lower wall or face ofthe opening a is provided with an elongated recess, b', to receive the locking-bolt, as will be more fully explained.
B represents the casing, carrying the locking mechanism, the same being circular in form and having an opening, d, at its lower end for the passage of alocking-bolt, c, which is adapted to engage the recess or opening bin the plate A, to lock said casingB against turning. The locking mechanism is located within the casing B, and may be of any ordinary orwellilECI}:"ICAIIO1\T forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,036, dated Tune 16, 1885.
(Model.)
known construction. The casing B is provided at its inner face and opposite sides thereof with oppositely-extending 4flanges c c', which are adapted to engage the under side of the plate A, and thus prevent the outward movement or detachment of the revolnble casing therefrom. rIlhe plate A is provided atits upper end, near each side thereof, with upwardly-extendng projections f, which projections are adapted to engage recesses or openings formed in the lower end of the keeper C, which is adapted to be attached to the lid of a trunk or box. Formed integral with the keeper-plate at thelower end thereof, and midway between the sides of the same, is a lug, D, having on its upper face, adjacent to its point of junction with the keeper C, a curved slot, g. The said lng D is adapted, when the lid of the trunk or box is lowered, to extend through the slot inthe plate A, so that the said plate and the keeper abut or bear against each other. The revoluble casing B is formed with a slot or opening, h, to receive said ear or lug D, and is cut away on its lower edge, adjacent to said slot, to form a flange, li, which, when the casing is turned, lits in the slot upon the upper side of the lug I), and thus prevents the lid of the trunk or box from being raised until the said casing has been turned to bring the slot 7ly in line with the saidlug I). The said casing B is provided with a lingerpiece, j, by which it may be turned.
To lock the casing against movement, it is turned so that the lug D and iiange fi engage, and the lock is turned by a key to throw the bolt thereof into engagement with the recesses b of plate A, thus holding the casing against movement and locking the lid.
The above-described lock may be mann factured at a slight cost, is readily and easily applied, effective and positive in its operation, and strong and durable.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a trunk-lock, the combination, with a base-plate having a circular opening, of a revolublc casing having a flange on its outer and flanges at its inner end, and carryinglocking mechanism and a keeper, substantially as set forth.
2. In a trunk-lock, the combination, with a base-plate having a slot at its upper end and a recess at its lower end, of a revoluble easing carrying a bolt adapted to engage said recess and mechanism for locking the same, and a keeper having a lug to engage a slot and flange in said easing, substantially as set forth.
3. In a trunk-lock, the combination, with a base-plate having a recess or opening, a slot at its upper end, and a recess at its lower end, of a revoluble casing carrying locking 1nechanisln, and having flanges to bear against the under side of said plate, said casing also having a slot and flange, substantially as described, and a keeper having a lug provided with a slot upon its upper side, substantially as set forth. p Y y 4. The combination, with a base-plate having an opening, a slot at its upper end, and a recess at its lower end, of a revoluble casing carrying locking mechanism to engage said recess, anges on the inner side of said casing, said casing also having a slot and a ange, substantially as described, at its upper end, and a keeper having a lug with a slot on its upper face, and provided With recesses or openings to receive projections of the baseplate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of' two Witnesses.
