SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,941, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed April 9, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. UMLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Osceola Mills, in the county of Polk and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thill-Oouplings, of which the following is a description.
Tlhis invention relates to that class of devices which are used for attaching thills to carriages; and it has for its object to provide means whereby either a tongue or a pair of thills may be quickly attached to or detached from the axle of a carriage.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a'thill-coupling hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in WlllCll-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention attached to a buggy-axle. (Shown in transverse vertical section.) Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, also showing the axle in transverse vertical section. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the removable portion of the coupling, and Fig. 4 is a top elevation of the clip and fixed portion.
A represents the axle of a carriage. B is a clip adapted to be secured around the axle, as usual. p
O is a block made to the front face of the clip as a portion thereof. This block is provided with an upward-proj ecting stud, D, which is screw-threaded at its top end. It is also provided with a dovetailed slot, E, which extends part way down its front face and terminates as a round hole, extending out through the bottom of the block.
F is the coupler having the usual ears, G, between which the eye H of the thill is received and held by a bolt, J, passing through the said eye and ears. The upper portion of the coupler extends from the front back over the whole top of the block, and is provided with a vertical hole, K, through which the stud D projects.
L is a thumb-nut screw-threaded upon the stud D above the coupler to hold the latter in place.

M is a dovetailed rib on the rear or inner face of the coupler, adapted to engage the dovetailed slot E. The lower end of this rib terminates in around stud, P, adapted to engage the hole in the bottom of the block.
N represents bracket-shaped sides joining the top and front portions of the coupler, thus forming a complete dust-guard for the dovetailed joint.
The stud P may be turned or milled, and the hole therefor may be drilled so that the two will fit perfectly, thus holding the dovetailed joint rigidly to do better service. There is no strain upon the thumbnut in service, its only duty being to prevent the coupler from bouncing off from the block 0, as the natural tendency of the coupler is to keep its position on the block by its own weight and by the added weight of the thills. A pair of thills and the rear ends of a tongue for the same carriage will both be provided with couplers to fit the same pair of blocks. The blocks 0 will be formed on clips B, of different lengths, and sold on the market with the clips straight, as usual, to be formed around any style of axle.
What I. claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a block, 0, upon a carriage-axle clip, B, the said block being dovetail-grooved part way down its front face, and having a round hole from the groove through the bottom of the block, a screw-threaded stud projecting from the top of the block, and a coupler, F, having ears to receive a thilleye, the top of the coupler extending backward and vertically perforated to engage the stud on the block, and a dovetailed rib on the inner face of the coupler terminating at its lower end in a round stud adapted to engage the dovetailed slot and the hole at its lowerend in the said block, the top and front of the coupler being joined by sides, substantially as sh own and described, for the purpose specified.
