Description
3,198,285 PLATFORM FOR CHIMNEYS :s
W. NERLICH WEATHER SHELTER FOR WORKING THE ERECTION OF FACTORY Filed Dec. 2, 196
Aug. 3, 1965 R 3 0C m H R V R N o I T M T L A E United States Patent vll 6 Claims. 61. ran-12s) The invention relates to improvements in weather shelters in connection with the erection of factory chimneys to be built of brickwork or concrete and having a diameter constantly decreasing in relation to its height, and has for its object a circular tent which provides protection of the working platform and the outer edge of the chimney during the climbing action of the working platform step by step within the chimney.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide tentpoles arranged in such a manner that they will be able to follow the constantly changing diameter of the chimney in all building sections of the chimney decreasing in diameter without any changes in the construction of the tent-poles, and, furthermore, that any side loads caused by the wind and acting on the circular tent may not be transmitted to the new brickwork.
More specifically the invention is characterized by the main feature that the poles embracing the chimney wall are pivotally fastened to the roof girders of the circular tent which are supported by the working platform and remain unchanged during the building of the chimney. In this Way the poles embracing the chimney will be able to follow automatically the constantly changing diameter of the chimney in all building sections without any changes of the construction of the poles itselves.
One form of embodiment of the present invention will become apparent from the enclosed drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 shows a vertical section of the chimney with working platform and circular tent, the left part of it representing the lower building section, and the right part showing the upper building section;
FIG. 2 shows a plan view of the circular tent according to FIG. 1.
Referring to FIG. 1 the working platform 1 known in its essential parts, which is arranged within the chimney 2 and supported in openings or cavities of the brickwork will be raised in known manner to the next higher working position after completion of a building section of a height of about 2.5 m. During this movement the working platform is supported on the safety platform arranged under the working platform and being raised accordingly for being supported in the same cavities of the brickwork which served as support for the working platform 1.
Above the working platform 1 the circular tent 3 is arranged the roof girders 4 of which consist of radially arranged binding joists 6 and rafters 7 connected by means of bridging joists and resting upon beams 8. The beams 8 are arranged on the box type girders 9 of the working platform 1 following the circular line a the diameter of which being somewhat smaller than the up per clear diameter of the chimney 2. The poles 10 embracing the chimney Wall are connected to the binding joists 6 and rafters 7 by means of the hinge joint 11. The poles consisting of two parts 10', and It)" are pivotally connected by means of the hinge joint 12. The covering of the tent (not shown in the drawing) may consist of canvas cover, or, for reasons of light weight and easier foldability, of synthetic material. In order to maintain a certain distance between the poles embracing the wall and the wall itself, the lower poles iii are provided 3,198,285 Patented Aug. 3, 1965 with spacers 13 equipped with rollers 14 for gliding along the outer wall of the chimney.
During the first building sections of the chimney the circle formed by the poles 10 connected to the binding joists 6 and rafters 7 is greater than the diameter of the roof of the working tent 3. In the middle stages of the building sections the poles 10 embracing the wall' are approximately vertically pendent in relation to the edge of the roof, whilst during the last building sections the circle formed by the poles 10 is smaller than the diameter of the roof of the tent. In order to provide for an equal distance between the poles 10 embracing thewall and the wall itself in all positions and even in the case of existing lifting forces caused by the wind, the lower poles 19 forming part of the poles 10 will be pressed inwards by means of a tensioning rope 15. The poles 10" are provided at their lower end with ears 16 for the fastening and guidance of the tensioning rope 15 the tension length of which may be altered by means of the turnbuckle 17. Before raising the working platform 1 the tensioning rope 15 will be released from the side of the stirrup ladder 18, and tensioned again after having reached the new working position of the working platform 1 together with the circular tent.
For the improvement of the stability of the circular tent obtained by means of the tensioning rope 15, a further tensioning rope 19 may be provided for the poles 10 having a changing inclination. The tensioning of this second rope 19 held by the cars 20 fastened to the poles 10', can be effected from within the tent by means of a turnbuckle.
The poles of the tent will be preferably made of aluminium tubes.
The form of embodiment shown in the drawing comprises a circular tent withan open frame 21 arranged in the middle of the roof, and with a lifting frame 22 extending within the open frame 21. However, attention is drawn to the fact that the invention is not limited to this form of embodiment but can be also applied to climbing working platforms with a low-level lifting frame and closed roof of the tent.
What I claim is:
1. A tent-coverable vertically movable work platform for constructing chimneys that have a constantly decreasing diameter as they rise in height comprising a vertically positionable and climbing platform construction within and supported by the chimney being constructed; a fixed size tent supporting framework having a plurality of ends which lie in an outer diameter relative to the changing diameter of said chimney that is less than the outer base diameter of said chimney; support beams based on said platform construction and supporting said framework vertically thereabove at points on said framework that are within the small top inner diameter of said chimney to allow such framework to be raised with said climbing platform construction; and a plurality of side poles each one of which is pivotally attached to and dependent from a corresponding one of said ends, said poles having a length to extend as low as the work level of said platform construction.
2. A platform according to claim 1 in which the diameter wherein said ends lie is greater than the outer diameter of the top of said chimney and said poles consist of two parts, the ends of which are hinge-connected to each other.
3. A platform according to claim 1 having spacers with one end attached to the lower end of said poles and its opposite end with a roll thereon to glide on the exterior of said chimney as the work platform rises.
4. A platform according to claim 1 having tensioning means attached to said poles to press said pivoted poles inwardly against said chimney.
5. A tent-coverable vertically movable Work platform for constructing chimneys that have a constantly decreasing diameter as they rise in height comprising a vertically positionable and climbing platform construction within and supported by the chimney being constructed; a fixed size tent-supporting framework having a plurality of ends which lie in an outer diameter relative to the changing diameter of said chimney that is less than the outer base diameter of said chimney and greater than the top outer diameter thereof; support beams based on said platform construction and supporting said framework vertically thereabove at points on said framework that are within the small top inner diameter of said chimney to allow such framework to be raised with said climbing platform construction; a plurality of side poles each one of which is pivotally attached to and dependent from a corresponding one of said girder ends, said poles having two portions hinge-connected and a length to extend aslow as the work level of said platform construction; and tensioning means attached to the lower end of said poles to press said pivoted and hinged poles inwardly against said chimney.
6. A platform according to claim 5 having spacers attached to the lower end of said poles with rollers on one end thereof to glide on the exterior of said chimney as said work platform rises.
