UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL MAGRATH, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW AND OTHER GLASS.
QPEGIFICATEON forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,592, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed April 3,1685.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIOHAEL MAGRATH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow and other Glass, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in plate'glass of a novel construction or configuration on one of its faces, applicable to fan-lights, windows, doors, and other structures through which light is required to be transmitted, and whereby a peculiar and beautiful multiplied prismatic effect or spectrum is obtained by the refrangibility of the rays of light upon a wall or other surface upon which the light so intercepted is made to fall, substantially as hereinafter described. The invention is applicable to churches, houses, and other buildings. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents a pane or sheet of plateglass embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a section of the same on the line 00 w in Fig. 1.
A is a pane or sheet of plate-glass suitable for glazing purposes, and which is made plain on its one side, a, but of special configuration or construction on its opposite side or face. Thus its other side or face is made up of a series of square or parallelogrammic protuberances or independent projecting faces B, arranged side by side in directions at right angles with each other, on opposite sides of transverse intermediate dividing-lines. Each fModel.)
of these parallelogrammic protuberances has its sides b beveling outward toward its center and terminating in a central flat surface, 0, of like marginal configuration with the outline of the protuberances, and each flat surface a has a concave, d, of circular configuration in it. The one face of the pane or sheet thus constructed with indented and beveled parallelogram mic protuberances is afterward highly polished, and by means of its peculiarly-shaped and polished surfaces a beautiful and multiplied prismatic or spectrum effect is produced upon the wall or other surface on which the light transmitted through the whole surface of the glazed pane or sheet is cast, the concave surfaces at adding to the effect.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pane or sheet A of glass, for windows and other glazed structures, having one of its sides or faces a plain, and its opposite polished side or face composed of a series of parallelogrammic protuberances, B, arranged in straight lines or courses in directions at right angles with each other, and with their sides I) beveling and terminating on their inner margins in fiat surfaces 0, of like parallelogrammic configuration as the outer margins of said sides, and having circular concaves d in their centers, substantiall y as and for the purpose herein set forth.
