Description

United States Patent 3,195,654 SUBSGlLER CHISEL Leonard Norris, Reinbeclr, and Eric M. McElhinney, Jesup, Iowa Filed lane 6, 19b2, Ser. No. 260,474 1 Claim. (Ql. 172-699) This invention relates to subsoilers and, more particularly, to an improved chisel blade for a subsoiler.
Subsoilers according to prior inventions were shaped so that they required more than a minimum of draw bar force to pull them through the ground.
The present subsoiler blade is so shaped that it requires a minimum force to pull it through the ground.
It is, accordingly, an object of the present invention to provide an improved subsoiler blade.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved subsoiler chisel which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and simple and efficient to use.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportions, and minor details of construction Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is an isometric view of a blade according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is a top view of the blade shown in FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a side view of the blade shown in FIG. 2.
Now with more particular reference to the drawing, a subsoiler chisel blade 18 is shown having fiat, generally parallel, vertically extending sides 15 which are disposed at right angles to a bottom surface 36 which is also flat.
The bottom surface terminates in a front edge 11. A rearwardly inclined planar surface 1d extends upwardly from the front edge 11 at an angle of approximately thirty degrees to the bottom surface 36.
A surface 17 is generally cylindrical with the central longitudinal axis of the cylinder at approximately thirty degrees to the bottom surface 30. The cylindrical surface 17 is intersected by the planar surface 14 at the front and by a flat top surface 16 which inclines forwardly slightly. A second top surface 39' is nearly parallel to the surface 16 but slopes downwardly slightly rearwardly. A shank 12 is generally square and of uniform size in cross section and is integrally attached to the rear end of the chisel blade 10. The back edge of the chisel blade is inclined upwardly at an angle of about sixty degrees to the bottom surface 36 and the bottom surface of the shank 12 is 3,1955% Patented July 20, 1965 approximately one-fourth inch above the plane of the bottom of the surface 31 The top surface 36 is intersected by a rearwardly facing V-shaped notch 18. The notch 18 has flat sides and terminates in a wedge shaped opening at the front which can receive the front edge of a subsoiler blade.
The device shown is adapted to have its shank 12 received in a socket at the bottom of a subsoiler blade with the front edge of the blade resting in the notch 18 and a lateral portion of the blade resting against the rearwardly facing shoulder defined by the rear part of blade 10 to prevent rearward movement thereof. A bolt can be inserted in an inverted hole 19 in the back of the shank 12 to hold the chisel in position on the subsoiler.
The relative relation and position of the various surfaces cause the chisel to offer minimum resistance and, thus, minimum force to pull it.
The foregoing specification sets forth the invention in its preferred practical forms but the structure shown is capable of modification within a range of equivalents without departing from the invention which is to be understood is broadly novel as is commensurate with the appended claim.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
A subsoiler chisel comprising a blade having a generally fiat bottom, said bottom terminating at its front end in an edge, the side edges of said blade being generally flat and disposed at right angles to said bottom, a top planar surface inclined upward from said front edge in a flat surface inclined to said bottom at an angle of approximately thirty degrees, a generally cylindrical top on said blade, the central axis of said top being inclined upwardly at a lesser angle than said planar surface, and a shank attached to a rear part of said blade and extending rearwardly therefrom and adapted to be received in a subsoiler, and a rearwardly facing V-shaped notch cut in said blade above said shank, said notch being adapted to receive the front sharp edge of a subsoiler blade, said shank being generally uniform in cross section and being of substantially lesser width than said blade whereby said blade defines a rearwardly facing shoulder.
