Description

P. SHIOKLE.
(N0 ModeL) GORE BAR.
No. 819,520. Patented June 9,1885.
N r-rrzns Pholu-Liflwgrapher, Washington, D4 0.
FFICEW AT NT FREDERICK SHIOKLE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CORE-BAR.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,520, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed June 6, 1884.
To ttZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SHIOKLE, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Core-Bars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a corebar having the improvement; Fig. 2, alongitudinal section of the core-car; Fig. 3, an end view of the core-bar; Fig. 4, a crosssection on the line 4 at of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a cross-section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6, a detail, and Fig. 7 an elevation from within the shell of the core-bar of one of the devices employed in holding the movable parts of the shell together.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
The present invention is an improvement in what are termed collapsible core-bars, such as are used in casting pipes and similar castings.
A represents the improved core-bar. The cylindrical surface to which the clay is applied consists of the shell a and the strip B. The shell a is composed of the parts a a and the part a, the part a being attached by means of the brackets a a to the shaft a, and the parts ct a being hinged at a a to the parts a The strip B is of wood or other cheap, readily combustible, or readily frangible material, and suited for insertion between the op posing edges, a a, of the parts a a, respectively, and substantially as shown in Fig. 1, and when thus inserted the strip forms, in connection with the shell a, a continuous cylinder.
In forming the core-bar the shell is expanded-say by springing itsufficiently to admit the strip B, and the strip is preferably secured in its place between the edges a a by grooving the edges a a" and shaping the strip to fit the grooves. A modification of this would be grooving the edges of the strip, and providing the edges a a of the shell with tenons to fit into the grooves in the strip. I do not, however, wish to be confinedto any particular mode of securing the strip in its place between the edges to a"; nor do I wish to rely in holding the strip upon the contractile force exerted by the shell a upon the edges of the strip, although it may be desirable in.
legs a a (No model.)
practice to so construct the shell a as to enable it to contract upon and bind the strip after it has been inserted between the edges a a". A desirable means for holding the edges against the strip is shown in the drawing. The parts a a are respectively provided with the A tie, of, having a head, a, at one end and a slot, a at the other, is placed in the lugs, (which are fitted to receive the tie,) and by means of a key, a, which is driven into the slot and against the adjacent lug, as shown in Fig. 7, the edges a a are drawn and held against the strip.
To keep the shell from springing out of shape, the parts a a are preferably tied to the center of the core-bar by means 01" the chains n n The core-bar, after the strip B is inserted in the shell (I, is completed in the ordinary manner, as indicated in Fig. 4, in which 0 represents the clay coating, and D the pipe.
In using the core-bar the heat incident to the casting of the metal operates to char the strip B sufficiently to enable it to readily drop from its position in the core-bar, whereupon the parts a a are free to turn on their hinges and close toward each other, and so as to enable the core-bar to be readily detached from the casting. In thus closing the parts a a the ties a may be detached from the lugs. When the corebar is to be used again in forming another core, another strip, B, is inserted between the edges Me, as beforethat is, a new strip is used every time a core is formed.
I claim- 1. The combination of the shell a and the strip B, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the shaft a, the brackets a", the part a the parts a a, and the strip B, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the shell a, the strip B, and the ties a substantially as described.
4. The combination of the shaft a, the brackets (6*, the parts a a a, the strip B, and the chains or a, substantially as described.
5. A core-bar, shell a, with edges a a, in combination with the strip B, for the purpose described.
Witness my hand.
FREDERICK SHIOKLE.
