SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,464, dated n 1885- Application filed March 14, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DEARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Sangerville, in the county of Piscataquis and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Floor-Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to floor-clamps; and it IO has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be simple in its construction, effective in its operation, and one that will be strong and durable.
With these ends in view the invention con- 1 5 sists in the combination, with a suitable frame, of a sliding rack-bar, a pivoted jointed arm to engage the teeth of the rack-bar, a lever for operating the pivoted jointed arm, and a pivoted pawl or stop.
The invention further consists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a floor-clamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate correspondingparts in all the figures, Arepresents a suitable base-plate, which is preferably cast, said frame being open near its front end and provided with grooves a.

Pivoted to the forward end of the sliding plate B is a bracket, (3, having a longitudinal groove or channel, (1, on its front edge or face, adapted to receive the tongue of the board being held in position preparatory to permanently securing the same.
E represents arms extending upwardly from the sides of the base A, and between said arms, at the lower forward ends thereof, is pivoted a pawl or stop, F, consisting of two short arms, 0, connected at their outer ends by a crosspiece, 9, which is inclined or set at an angle,

and is adapted to engage the teeth on the sliding rack-plate B and hold it against backward movement.
At the rear end of the base A are provided 5 5 upwardly-extending ears or lugs h, between which is pivoted a jointed arm, G, the forward end of which is adapted to engage the teeth of the sliding rack-plate B. I
I represents a bell-crank lever, which is piv oted between the arms E at the upper ends of the same. The said bell-crank lever is con nected with the jointed arm G at the joint of the same by a short arm, J.
The base-plate A is provided on its under side, at the rear end thereof, with downward ly-extending spurs or spuds c, which, when the device is operated, hold it against backward movement.
The operation is as follows: The device is placed in position, with the pivoted bracket on the end of the sliding raek-plate bearing against the board to be held in place. The bell-crank lever is then raised, which causes the jointed arm G to slide rearwardly upon the sliding rack-plate B. The bell-crank lever is then lowered, which causes the jointed arm to straighten and move the sliding rack plate B forwardly. As the said plate B is being moved forward, the pivoted pawl or stop is raised by the teeth of the same, and as soon as the bell-crank lever has been lowered to its fullest extent the pivoted stop or'pawl engages the sliding rack-plate and prevents the backward movement of the same, thus allowing the strip or board to be secured in place.
It will be seen that by the employment of my improved floor clamp the boards may be laid very closely together, from'the fact that they are held securely in position while being nailed or otherwise secured.
My improved floor-clamp is simple in its construction, effective in its operation, strong and durable, and may be readily and easily operated.
