S G. E. THOMAS.
POLE AND SHAFT COUPLING.
No. 319,348. Patented June 2, 1885.
. WITNESSES: d204,
UNITED STATES GEORGE EGBERT THOMAS,
PATENT warren.
OF ABINGDON, VIRGINIA.
POLE AND SHAFT COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,348, dated June 2 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Abingdon, in the county of "Washington and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pole andShaft Couplings, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to that class of devices Which are used for attaching poles and shafts or thills to carriages; and it has for its object to attach a pole or thills of given width to a carriage having any length of axle, or to attach the same to a sleigh either to draw centrally or to one side of center.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forn1- ing a pole and thill coupling hereinafter de scribed and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a pole and a carriage axle, showing my couplings. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical secti0n,of my coupling clamps and hinge.
A represents a carriage-axle, and B a teampole having the usual cross-bar, C. To each end of this cross-bar I secure a square bar of iron, D, as an attaching-point for one end, E, of my coupling-clamp. This clamp consists of a block, one end of which is one section of a hinge, and the other end of which has a square hole horizontally through it to receive the bar D. The outer end of this block is split open into the hole by a horizontal slot, G, and provided with a binding-screw, H, whereby the end of the block may be sprung together as a clamp upon the bar D. The opposite end, F, of the hinge is a block provided with a square hole, a split and a screw like the block 13, and it is adapted to engage a square portion of the axle A, or a similar square bar attached by clips to the'axle or to the frame of a sleigh. I11 case a separable bar is so attached either to the carriage or sleigh it shallcorrespond inaction to the bar D. In service the bar D and the screw-clamps G H enable a pole of any width to be attached to a carriage of any Width. They also enable the pole to be set either to one side or in the cen ter of a sleigh.
In attaching to thills the bars D are secured to the cross-bar thereof corresponding to the cross-bar O. In attaching to buggy-axles which are stocked with Wood, so as to inter fere with the direct application of clamp F thereto, the bar D, made of the same size as an axle and of any suitable length, is attached as 'a portion of the strap of the clip which joins the axle and its stock.
As here shown, the bar D is a portion of the piece of iron forming the pole and cross-bar brace; but it is evident that it might be attached independently by clips in the manner that such parts are usually attached to carriages.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a pair of hinges having square holes through them, one of which is adapted to receive a carriage-axle parallel with their pivots and split out at their ends, and binding-screws through their ends, of bars D, adapted to fit the other square hole in the hinges, and means for attaching the bar D to a vehicle, substantially as shown and described.
GEORGE EGBERT THOMAS.
