ANIMAL-GUARD.
SPESECATN forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,973, dated June 2, 1885.
Applicalion filed May 24, 1884. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. Fnn'ron, residing at Chicago, iu the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Animal Mats or Guards, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in Which- Figure l shows the mat applied to a horse. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same from the inside. Fig. 3 a detail in section showing the blunt-pointed projections.
This invention relates to a device for use with stallions for the prevention of masturbation; and it consists in the combination, with a mat or guard having straps for securing and holding the saine in position, of the bluntpointed flexible projections, all constructed substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, A represents the mat or guard, made of india-rubber or other suitable material. The mat as shown is in the form of a triangle, with curved sides and a dishing base; but its sides and base can be lotherwise formed. The flap or sheet portion of this mat or guard is provided, with holes c, for ventilating purposes and for the passage of iluids.
B is a pad formed with or suitably secured to the flap portion of the mat and located on the upper surface of the mat, or that surface adjacent to the animal When the mat or guard This pad is formed with curved ends and a curved rear edge in the form of construction shown, and its forward portion is formed dishing; but it could he otherwise formed. This pad on its upper face is provided with a series of projections, Which are blunt-pointed and may be formed by inclosing small pins b Within the material, as shown in Fig. 3, or in any other suitable manner, to present a surface having a series of blunt-pointed projections. This pad is located near the forward end of the mat or guard.
G is a strap secured in any suitable manner to the rear end of the mat, which strap may be bifurcated to form a tail-piece, (l, or such tail-piece may be formed of independent straps secured to the strap C. The strap and tailthe member is extended] piece may be made of leather or other suitable material.
D are straps, one secured in any suitable manner to each forward corner of the mat and of sufficient length to extend up and be attached to the belly-band or other support on the back of the animal. The lower portion of each strap may be of rubber, the remainder of leather or other suitable material; or the entire strap may be of rubber, or of leather or other material.
E is a support adapted to be attached to the belly-band and to receive the ends of the straps D, which may be attached by buckles or otherwise; F, the belly-band of the usual construction 5 G, a strap ruiming from the tail-piece C to the support E to keep the tailpiece in position.
The mat may be made of india-rubber, as this material is impervious to fluids and less liable to injury from the fluids7 and is also easily kept clean; but it may be made of leather or fabric, or other material made impervious. XVhen made of rubber, the pad can be molded or formed therewith and the material formed around the pins to produce blunt points; or such points might be formed of the material itself by vulcanizing or otherwise hardening.
In use the niat is attached to the animal as shown in l, bringing the pad B in posi-- tion beneath the member, so that as the meinber is partly protruded it will come in contact with the blunt-pointed projections and Will be instantly withdrawn and masturbation prevented, as it cannot take place unless The projections being blunt-pointed, will not iniiict any injury to the tender part, and at the same time they will produce the desired eil-ect of causing a u-'ithdrawal of the member.
The device can be readily attached to the animal, and no ill effects will arise from its use, as, While it is effectual as a prevent-ive, it is not cruel or dangerous to the animal.
As shown, the blunt-pointed projections are formed on the pad, but the pad could be omitted and such projections formed with or secured to the body ofthe mat itself.
Although chiefly designed for use with stallions, the mat or guard can be used with other male breeding animals, its size and shape bepointed flexible projections, all constructed ing made tosut the animal. substantiall y as described.
Vlnat I claim as new, and desire to secure A T T by Letters Patent, is- JOEL H FEB TON" 5 The combinationnvith a mat or guard for the Witnesses: purpose specified, having sti-aps for securing ALBERT H: Aunis, and holding the same in position, of the lolunt-` O. NV. BOND.
