is manually and mechanically folded around the mandrel downwardly through 180 to a rear position for ejection of the assembled carton by pneumatically operated means carried by the boom. A pair of cam-operated inwardly movable folding and clamping elements is associated with each mandrel and a vertically movable cam-operated clamping element on each arm clamps the glued and overlapped ends of the carton blank in firm engagement during the swinging of the arm from its carton-assembling position to its ejection position.
The present invention is a greatly simplified semiautomatic, sem-i-manual version of the fully automatic carton-assembling machine of co-pending application Serial Number 131,238 filed August 14, 1961, now US. Patent 3,093,035 granted June 11, 1963.
It is a principal object of this invention to provide a simple, economical, yet highly effective and efiioient, semiautomatic machine for assembling double walled cartons from flat blanks.
It is another object of the invention to provide such a machine having a pair of alternately usable forming mandrels movable from an assembly zone to an ejection zone and including means for clamping the glued and overlapped panel portions together for setting of the adhesive during the movement.
It is a further object to provide such a machine with automatic ejecting means for removing the finished car-ton.
It is still another object to provide a machine of the character described having power-operated means for assisting in the folding and clamping operations.
Other objects, uses and advantages will become apparent from a reading of the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and wherein:

Machine 21 comprises a frame structure generally designated 22 and formed of channel and angle bars welded and/or bolted or riveted together to provide a table-like structure having supporting legs 23 and a sheet metal top plate 24. The front fourth of top plate 24 serves as a work surface upon which the flat blank 25 (FIGURE 5) is first laid and then manually folded as shown in FIG- URES 6 through 9 preparatory to being slid upon one of the mandrels hereinafter described. The rear three fourths of top plate 24 has approximately half of its central area cut away at 26 to provide a free space 27 through which the boom arms and their carried mandrels and accessory devices swing in moving the mandrels between their front carton-forming and rear carton-ejecting positions.
The mandrel-carrying boom is mounted on a shaft 28 fastened at its ends in aligned apertures in mounting brackets 29 by set screws 30. Brackets 29 are bolted at 31 to the top plate 24 at opposite sides of cutout area 26. The boom, generally designated 32, the oppositely extending ends of which constitute arms 32a and 32b (see FIG. 17), is formed of two elongated plates 33 and 34 held in rigid parallelism by cross bars 35 welded or otherwise fixed therebetween. Boom 32 has a pair of coaxial bearing sleeves 36 and 37 welded to plates 33 and 34 and mounting said boom rotatably on shaft 28. A sprocket 38 is fixed to the outer end of sleeve 36 and is driven by chain 39 to swing the boom as described above. Chain 39 is driven by a sprocket 40 mounted on shaft 41 of a gear reduction box 42 coupling sprocket 40 to the electric motor 43. Gear box 42 includes a torque-limiting clutch of conventional construction (not shown). Motor 43 is mounted on a plate 44 fastened to top plate 24 by bolts 45 passing through elongated apertures 44a on mounting plate 44, so that the tension on chain 39 can be adjusted by a conventional knob 46 having a threaded shaft 47.
Shaping mandrels 48 and 49 have their sides formed by relatively thin plates 50 and 51 fastened in any suitable manner to the faces of boom plates 33 and 34 (or, if desired, the surfaces of said plates 33 and 34 can serve as the mandrel side faces). A top plate 52 bolted or otherwise fixed in place forms the top surfaces of mandrels 48 and 49. The mandrels are left open at their bottoms for a purpose hereinafter explained, but it should be noted that backing plates in these areas are not needed, as will be apparent when the operation of the machine is described.
Each of the mandrels 48 and 49 has mounted thereon a pair of panel-folding devices 53- and 54. Devices 53 and 54 comprise arms 55 and 56 centrally pivoted to mounting blocks 57 for limited swinging laterally toward and away from the upper corners of the mandrels when positioned at the front of the machine. Blocks 57 are adjustably fixed by threaded shanks and lock nuts collectively designated 58 to boom plates 33 and 34 (FIGURES 4 and 15). Arms 55 and 56 have adjustably attached to their upper surface, by nuts and bolts 59, a panel-folding and holding plate 60, the inner edge 60a of whichis upwardly and inwardly inclined for a purpose hereinafter described. The lower surface of each plate 60 is adapted to swing over the top surface of top mandrel plate 52 parallel thereto and spaced therefrom by a distance approximating the thickness of the carton wall to be embraced therebetween.
Each of the arms 55 and 56 has pivotally attached thereto an inwardly swinging rollercarrying shorter arm 61, the roller 62 of which is urged toward the side of the mandrel so as to press carton panels thereagainst. Coil spring 63 under torsional deformation around pivot pin 64 mounting the roller arm 61 on the end of arm 55 or 56, yieldably urges arm 61 and its roller toward the mandrel.
Arms 55 and 56 and their carried panel-folding and pressing devices 60 and 61-62 are moved toward their mandrels 48 and 49 at the beginning of the downward swinging of each mandrel by a pair of cams 6 and 66 fastened to the fixed shaft 28 as by set screws (not shown).
'Cams 65 and 66 have steep laterally pitched surfaces 68 engageable by cam followers (rollers) 69 atthe ends of arms 55'and 56 opposite the ends thereof carrying the panel folders 53. The high surfaces of cams 65 and 66 extend for almost 180 so as to continue the clamping action of the folding and holding devices 60 and 61 during most of the mandrel swing from the front (shaping) position to the rear (ejecting) position,
releasing the holding just in time for ejection and permitting the feeding of a new box partially erected at the front (shaping) end.
To hold the end half panels of the row of edge-joined panels forming the outer Wall of the double walled carton pressed against the underlying panel of the inner row of wall panels, each end portion of the plates 33 and 34 'has mounted thereon a cam actuated vertically swingable 'arm 70 centrally pivotally mounted in a yoke 71 by a horizontally extending pivot pin 72 (FIG. 17). Yoke 71 has a downwardly extending threaded supporting stud 'adjustably received in a tapped bore in a transverse support bar 73 Welded at its ends to boom plates 33 and 34.
The end of arm 70 overlying each mandrel has pivotally attached thereto an elongated flat pressure plate 74 having a pair of spaced upstanding ears 75 forming a yoke embracing the end of arm 70 which is apertured to receive the horizontally extending pivot pin 76, A coil spring 77 is employed to balance plate 74 to prevent damage when plate 74 meets the upwardly projecting half-panels of the box. The'other end of arm 70 has a downwardly extending extension 78 carrying at its lower 'end a roller 79 serving as a follower for cam 80. Cam 80 is fixed to stationary shaft 28 by a set screw 81 (FIG- URE-17) and has a steep sloped thrust surface 82 and a constantradius raised surface 83 extending through an arc sufiicient to maintain the clamping action of arm '70 and plate 74 through almost 180 of movement of boom 32, releasing arm 70 for movement of plate 74 away from its mandrel by tension coil spring 83a just before the mandrel reaches its ejection position at the rear of ma chine 21.
Each half-circle swing of boomv 32 is arrested by a pair of spring positioned and pneumatically releasable stop devices 84, one mounted on top plate 24 on each side of boom 32, (see FIGURES 4 and 16). Each stop device 84 (FIGURES 15 and 16) comprises a block 85, a reciprocal plunger 86 in a horizontal bore therethrough, a pneumatic cylinder 87 connected thereto by its piston rod 88 and a coil spring 89 surrounding piston rod 88 and compressed between the cylinder 8-7 and the 7 adjacent end of plunger 86 to urge plunger 86 toward its boom stopping position of FIGURE 16, from which it is withdrawn by cylinder 87 (FIGURE 15) to permit swinging of the boom. Plunger-s .86 are engaged by colevel corners.
. 4 operating stops 90 bolted or otherwise; fixed to the sides or" boom plates 33 and 34 at each end thereof.
The ejecting mechanism for the finished carton is best illustrated in FIGUREZOL Said mechanism comprises a pair of identical end members generally designated 91 each formed of a hatchet-shaped plate 92, an elongated notched flat bar 93 and a C-shaped bar 94 welded to and interconnecting said plate 92 and bar 93 as shown. End members 91 are interconnected by four sliding guide and interconnecting rods 95 rigidly fixed at their ends in apertures in parts 92 and 93. Rods 95 are slidably guided for reciprocation in aligned apertures in two pairs of guide bars 96 and 97 welded at their ends to blocks 98. Blocks 98 are attached to the edges of boom plates 33 and 34 at equal distances from and on each side of shaft 28. Only one pair of guide bars 96 and 97 is shown in FIGURE 20, the other pair being located directly below those shown. Adjustably stop collars 98a limit the reciprocal'movements of the ejecting mechanism. Extensions 92b of plates 92'are the parts of ejecting heads 91 that engage opposite edges of the closure panels to effect ejection of the finished carton, the ejection movements being effected by cushioned head, 99 on the free end of piston rod 100 of pneumatic cylinder 101. Cylinder 101 is mounted on top 'plate 24 by a supporting bracket 102 bolted or welded wire screening 105. Screens 103 are bolted to the lateral margins of top plate 24.
A pneumatically operated glue spraying device 106 is mounted over the front table portion of top plate 24 so as to be positioned to spray adhesive material in a laterally elongated pattern covering the inner surfaces of the outer 'row of wall panels when the partially erected carton is placed just past the spray zone. Spray device 106 is adjustably supported on rod 107 mounted on an elevated transverse support plate 108 which is in turn fixed to the upper ends of standards 109 welded or bolted to top plate 24. Plate 108 also supports a reservoir 110 for the adhesive material.
A pair of cone-shaped knobs 111 is fastened to the upper lateral surfaces of top plate 24 to aid the operator in inserting his fingers under the blank. Adjustable vertical guide members 112 further assist the operator in holding the carton partlyassembled and in guiding it onto the mandrel, as will be fully described below. Members 112 are adjustably attached to top plate 24 by brackets 113 and bolts 114 (see FIGURE 2).
Each mandrel has fixed thereto a pair of blank guides, one pair on each side of the mandrel adjacent its table- Each pair of guides comprises a hatchetshaped plate 115 the wide portion of which is provided with verticallyelongated apertures 116 (FIGURE 17) to receive screws 117 by which said plate is adjustably fixed -to mandrel side plates 33 or 34. The other'plate 118 of each pair of guides is similarly apertured to receive screws '119 for the same purpose. The end edges'of plates 115 and 118 are beveled at 120 to facilitate'entrance of the leading edge of the ,carton blank into the width-adjusted space therebetween.
'A knee-engageable bail-shaped rod 121 extends across the front of machine 21 below top plate 24. The ends of rod 121 are pivotally held by brackets 122which limit movement of said rod away from the machine to the position thereof shown in FIGURE 1. A pair of springs 123 urges said rod. 121 toward said position. A conventional electric switch (not shown) is operated by knee actuation of rod 121 to interrupt the circuit to motor 43 to stop operation of the machine in case of emergency.
The operation of the machine is as follows:
The operator pushes start button whereby the electrical and pneumatic systems are energized. A timer (not shown) starts to time the dwell time of the mandrel in its feeding position (5 to 8 seconds).
The operator places a flat blank with its inner side up on the work surface 24 and manually folds the blank in the manner shown in FIGURES 6 and 7 into the shape shown in FIGURE 8, leaving one inner side panel exposed and two half panels unfolded.
Thereafter, the operator slides the partially preshaped carton through the glueing area defined by the guides 112, said guides having been adjusted to the size of the carton, the carton depressing the protruding contacts 112a mounted on the inside face of one of the guides 112. Contacts 112:: are connected to limit switches which activate the adhesive spraying device 106. Said spraying device applies adhesive to the exposed side panel of the carton for about a half second, the spraying device being automatically deenergized by a pneumatic timer. The operator continues to push the carton blank onto the mandrel until the inner bottom panel thereof meets the front of the mandrel.
By now the dwell time of the mandrel in its feeding position has expired and the timer causes motor 4-3 to start and also actuates the pneumatic cylinders 87 to release the stop devices 84 by retracting their plungers 86 which had arrested the boom 32 in its horizontal feeding position.
I There is a short time lag between the starting of the motor 43 and the release of the stop devices 34, this time lag being taken up by the slip clutch mounted between the gear reducer 42 and the sprocket driven thereby. The plungers 86 are quickly returned by action of the springs 89 to their normal positions for stopping swinging of the boom when it completes its half-circle swing.
While the boom 32 starts to swing downwardly, the arms and 56 begin to move toward the mandrel where by the curved inner edges of the panel folding plates 60 urge the upstanding half panels of the box inwardly and downwardly. Simultaneously the pressure plate 74 moves downwardly to complete the folding of the half panels and to press said half panels against the underlying panel onto which adhesive has been applied previously by the adhesive spraying device 106. The inward movement of the arms 55 and 56 as well as the downward movement of pressure plate 74, are achieved by means of the stationary earns and 80, respectively, on which the cam followers 69 and 79 ride. The high surfaces of the mentioned cams are related to the 180 swing of the boom 32. Being J somewhat less than 180 in arcuate extent, they release the arms 55 and 56 as well as the pressure plate 74 just before the mandrel arrives at the ejection position. The arms 55 and 56 and the pressure plate 74 then return to the initial position aided by the springs 83a. The boom 32 on arriving at the ejecting position is arrested as the stops 90 mounted on the sides of boom plates 33 and 34 meet the plungers 86.
Simultaneously, limit switches correlated to the 180 swing of boom 32 stop the motor 43 and actuate the air cylinder 1M of the ejecting mechanism. At the same time the timer is returned to its zero position and repeats its cycle until interrupted by the stop button or the emergency stop 121.
The ejection of the box is achieved as the head 99 attached to the rod 160 of the air cylinder 101 moves the reciprocating ejecting mechanism to the rear, whereby the extensions 92b of the plate 92, engaging opposite edges of the box closure panels, remove said box from the mandrel. The box slides on conventional guides (not shown) onto a conventional conveyor (not shown). The head 99 in its rearmost position actuates a limit switch which interrupts the air supply to the cylinder 161. The rod 100 together with the head 99 are retracted to their initial positions by a spring incorporated in the cylinder 101. The ejecting mechanism itself returns to its forward posit-ion defined by the guide bars 92 and the adjustable stop collars 98:: by gravity as the boom 32 takes its next swing.
While the mandrel swings from the front (feeding) position to the rear (ejecting) position, the operator prepares a new blank as above described, and the operation is repeated.
Immediately adjacent and forwardly of the structure designated at 108409 and inwardly of each side edge of the top plate 24, it is contemplated placing hand ope-rated switches in series for starting a cycle of the operation of machine, whereby a safety factor is provided by insuring that both of the operators hands are away from moving parts of the apparatus. I
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A machine for folding flat blanks into erected cartons, comprising:
a table-like base structure,
means defining a horizontally disposed work surface at the front of said machine,
a boom having a pair of diametrically oppositely disposed arms,
means mounting said boom for swinging about a horizontally disposed axis perpendicular to said boom adjacent its midpoint and extending transversely of said machine, means defining a pair of rectangular mandrels, one fixed to the free end of each arm and having vertically and horizontally disposed surfaces substantially parallel to the longitudinal center line of said arms,
power-operated means for intermittent-1y swinging said boom through half-circle arcs, stop means for arresting movements of said boom so as to position first one and then the other of said mand-rels adjacent the rear portion of said work surface whereby a partially erected carton can be slid endwise over said mandrel surfaces, fluid actuated plunger means for respectively engaging and disengaging said stop means at the end and beginning of each half-circle movement of said boom,
means connected to and movable with each of Said mandrels for applying pressure to overlapped carton portions whereby adhesive material applied between said portions can be maintained under setting and bonding pressures during the time the cartonholding mandrel is moving through said half-circle arc to bring said carton to the opposite end of said machine, and
means for removing the thus formed carton from said mandrel at said opposite end of said machine,
said carton removing means comprising a pair of pusher members mounted on said boom, one on each side of the midpoint thereof and alternately engageable with the inner bottom panel of an erected carton being removed, and means rigidly interconnecting said pusher members, and
slide means engaging said rod means for guiding said pusher members for longitudinal movement relative to said boom.
2. Structure according to claim 1, additionally comprising normally retracted means fixed to said base structure and extensible to engage and impart carton removing movement to said pusher members in alternating sequence.
3. Structure according to claim 1, additionally comprising a pair of upright, bilaterally symmetrically and longitudinally extending guides positioned to assist an operator in sliding a partially erected carton onto a mandrel.
4. Structure according to claim 3, said mandrels being easily replaceable by like mandrels of various sizes and said upright guides being laterally adjustable for adapting said machine for fabricating cartons of various sizes. 5. Structure according to claim 1, additionally comprising spray means attached to said base structure for applying adhesive in a predetermined pattern on a blank being fed into said machine,
timer controlled means for operating said spray means for a predetermined time period in each 180 cycle of operation of said machine, and
means engageable by a blank being fed into said machine for automatically initiating operation ofsaid timer controlled means.
6. Structure according to claim 1, said means for applying pressure to overlapped portions of said carton comprising a lever extending longitudinally of and above each mandrel in the blank receiving position thereof,
a pressure plate on the outer end of each lever and positioned to engage a blank wrapped around said mandrel,
horizontal axis pivot means fixed to each boom a-rm transversely and medially thereof,
said pivot means vertically swingably attaching said lever medially thereof to said boom arm,
a cam fixed to said frame structure and extending arcu- -ately around the axis of rotation of said boom,
'a cam follower on the end of each lever adjacent and engageable with said cam so as to move said pressure plate toward said mandrel as the latter begins each cycle of movement thereof and I to permit movement of said pressure plate away from said mandrel as said mandrel approaches the end of said cycle of movement.
7. Structure according to claim 1, additionally comprising lever mounted plates swingably attached to said boom on both sides of said mandrels, and
cam means fixed to said frame structure for moving said plates toward said mandrel as the latter begins its cycle of movement to press outer side panels of said carton against underlying inner side panels thereof, a
said cam means releasing said plates for movement tons, comprising 1 away from said mandrel as the latter approaches V a table-like base structure, means defining a horizontally disposed work surface at the front of said machine,
' a rectangular mandrel having vertically and horizontally disposed surfaces for engagement with the carton 'panels of substantially the same size and shape theresaid mandrel adapted to alternate from a loading position at the front to an ejecting position at the rear of said machine whereby a partially erected-carton can be slid endwise over said mandrel surfaces at said loading position, means for guiding said mandrel,
means for applying pressure to overlapped carton portions whereby adhesive material between said overlapped portions can be maintained under bonding pressure,
said pressure applyingmeans comprising pneumatically actuated and'time controlled pressure "plates mounted on one side of saidtable-like structure adjacent to said loading position of said mandrel,
at least one of said pressure plates being connected to and movable with said mandrel, and
means for removing said carton from said mandrel.
9. Structure according to claim 8, additionally comprising a pair of upright standards fixed tosaid frame structure laterally thereof and forwardly'of the front end of said mandrel,
a horizontal support bar attached toand bridging the upper portions of said standards, and an adhesive spray device adjustably mounted on said support bar,
said spray device adapted to travel onsaid support bar transversely of said work surface in each cycle for applying adhesive to a series of carton panels.

Claims (1)

1. A MACHINE FOR FOLDING FLAT BLANKS INTO ERECTED CARTONS, COMPRISING: A TABLE-LIKE BASE STRUCTURE, MEANS DEFINING A HORIZONTALLY DISPOSED WORK SURFACE AT THE FRONT OF SAID MACHINE, A BOOM HAVING A PAIR OF DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSITELY DISPOSED ARMS, MEANS MOUNTING SAID BOOM FOR SWINGING ABOUT A HORIZONTALLY DISPOSED AXIS PERPENDICULAR TO SAID BOOM ADJACENT ITS MIDPOINT AND EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY OF SAID MACHINE, MEANS DEFINING A PAIR OF RECTANGULAR MANDRELS, ONE FIXED TO THE FREE END OF EACH ARM AND HAVING VERTICALLY AND HORIZONTALLY DISPOSED SURFACES SUBSTANTIALLY PARALLEL TO THE LONGITUDINAL CENTER LINE OF SAID ARMS, POWER-OPERATED MEANS FOR INTERMITTENTLY SWINGING SAID BOOM THROUGH HALF-CIRCLE ARCS, STOP MEANS FOR ARRESTING MOVEMENTS OF SAID BOOM SO AS TO POSITION FIRST ONE AND THEN THE OTHER OF SAID MANDRELS ADJACENT THE REAR PORTION OF SAID WORK SURFACE WHEREBY A PARTIALLY ERECTED CARTON CAN BE SLID ENDWISE OVER SAID MANDREL SURFACES, FLUID ACTUATED PLUNGER MEANS FOR RESPECTIVELY ENGAGING AND DISENGAGING SAID STOP MEANS AT THE END AND BEGINNING OF EACH HALF-CIRCLE MOVEMENT OF SAID BOOM, MEANS CONNECTED TO AND MOVABLE WITH EACH OF SAID MANDRELS FOR APPLYING PRESSURE TO OVERLAPPED CARTON PORTIONS WHEREBY ADHESIVE MATERIAL APPLIED BETWEEN SAID PORTIONS CAN BE MAINTAINED UNDER SETTING AND BONDING PRESSURES DURING THE TIME THE CARTONHOLDING MANDREL IS MOVING THROUGH SAID HALF-CIRCLE ARC TO BRING SAID CARTON TO THE OPPOSITE END OF SAID MACHINE, AND MEANS FOR REMOVING THE THUS FORMED CARTON FROM SAID MANDREL AT SAID OPPOSITE END OF SAID MAHINE, SAID CARTON REMOVING MEANS COMPRISING A PAIR OF PUSHER MEMBERS MOUNTED ON SAID BOOM, ONE ON EACH SIDE OF THE MIDPOINT THREOF AND ALTERNATELY ENGAGEABLE WITH THE INNER BOTTOM PANEL OF AN ERECTED CARTON BEING REMOVED, AN MEANS RIGIDLY INTERCONNECTING SAID PUSHER MEMBERS, AND SLIDE MEANS ENGAGING SAID ROD MEANS FOR GUIDING SAID PUSHER MEMBERS FOR LONGITUDINAL MOVEMENT RELATIVE TO SAID BOOM.
