This invention relates to an improved apparatus and method for forming cartons or the like.
It is well known that various carton structures are formed by suitably gluing together various portions of a blank of material, such as corrugated cardboard and the like, to form a completed carton which can be subsequently used to package the desired product or products.
However, when forming such cartons from the blank carton structures, it is necessary to effectively hold the glued areas thereof together under pressure so that the adhesive will dry with the carton structure in the proper position to form the completed carton.
In addition, it is necessary that the carton structure be so held together under pressure during the adhesive drying operation that the resulting carton will be substantially uniform to insure a proper configuration of the carton as well as a tight carton without voids in the glued areas thereof.
According to the teachings of this invention, such an improved method and apparatus are provided.
In particular, one embodiment of this invention provides an apparatus wherein a carton structure can be disposed around a movable mandrel and have the sides thereof placed under pressure a sufiicient length of time to insure a proper gluing operation and, thereafter, be readily removed from the mandrel means so that additional cartons can be formed in a like manner.
Further, this invention provides means wherein the carton forming operation can be substantially continuous as will be apparent hereinafter.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide an improved apparatus for forming cartons or the like, the apparatus of this invention having one or more of the novel features as set forth above or hereinafter shown or described.
Another object of this invention is to provide-an improved method for forming cartons or the like, the method of this invention having one or more of the novel features set forth above or hereinafter shown or described.
Other objects, uses and advantages of this invention are apparent from a reading of this description which proceeds with reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and wherein:

While the various features of this invention are hereinafter described and illustrated as being particularly adaptable for forming cartons or the like, it is to be understood that the various features of this invention can be utilized singly or in any combination thereof to provide means for forming other devices as desired.
Therefore, this invention is not to be limited to only the embodiment illustrated in the drawings, because the drawings are merely utilized to illustrate one of the wide variety of uses of this invention.
Referring now to FIGURES 1, 2, 3 and 4, the improved apparatus of this invention is generally indicated by the reference numeral 20 and comprises a frame means 21 suitably supported in a fixed position on a floor structure or the like and carrying a movable mandrel means 22 in a manner now to be described.
As illustrated in FIGURE 4, the frame means 21 includes a pair of channel-defining members 23 respectively receiving outwardly directed guides 24 fastened to the substantially rectangular mandrel 22 so that the mandrel 22 can be moved in a horizontal direction relative to the frame means 21 in a manner hereinafter described and be guided by the channel-defining means 23 of the frame means 21.
The mandrel means 22 has an elongated gear rack 25 secured thereto along the longitudinal central portion of the bottom wall 26 thereof as illustrated in FIGURES 1 and 4. The gear rack 25 of the mandrel 22 is disposed in meshing relation with a drive gear 27 suitably attached to an output shaft 28 of a reversible electrical motor 29 carried by the frame means 21.
Thus, when the motor 29 is energized in a manner hereinafter described, the same is adapted to either move the mandrel means 21 from the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 to the position illustrated in FIGURE 2 or from the position illustrated in FIGURE 2 to the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 for a purpose hereinafter described.
Stripping means 30 and 31 are respectively provided for the opposed ends 32 and 33 of the mandrel means 22, each stripping means 30 and 31 comprising metal members 34 disposed around the four sides of the mandrel means 22 and closely adjacent thereto to strip completed cartons from the ends 32 and 33 of the mandrel means 22 when the mandrel means 22 is moved in a reciprocating manner hereinafter set forth.
A first set 40 of pressure plate means 36 are secured to the mandrel 22 adjacent the end 32 thereof While another set 37 of pressure plate means 36 are secured to the mandrel means 22 adjacent the end 33 thereof.
In particular, each pressure plate means 36 is suitably mounted on frame means 38 attached to a respective side of the mandrel means 2-2 and carrying a pneumatic or hydraulic piston and cylinder arrangement 39, the actuator 39 carrying a pressure plate 40 on the end of the piston rod 41 thereof so as to be movable toward the respective side of the mandrel means 22 at the respective end 32 or 33 thereof for a purpose hereinafter described.
Thus, it can be seen that four fluid-actuated operators 39 are disposed at each end 32 and 33 of the mandrel means 22 for a purpose hereinafter described.
Thus, when the apparatus 20 is disposed in the position illustrated in FIGURE 1, and the pressure plates 40 are disposed outwardly from the end 32 thereof, an operator can assemble a carton structure 42 around the end 32 of the mandrel means 22 in the manner illustrated in FIG- URE 5 whereby all of the glue applied areas of the carton 32 are disposed in the proper position for forming the completed carton.
Thereafter, the pressure plates 40 of the set' 35 are moved radially inwardly in the manner illustrated in FIGURES 7 and 8, in a manner hereinafter described, to hold the glued areas of the carton structure 42 together for a predetermined length of time so that the adhesive will set and hold the carton structure 42 in its completed form.
Thereafter, the pressure plates 40 are moved outwardly and the mandrel means 22 is moved from the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 to the position illustrated in FIGURE 2 in a manner hereinafter described to cause the completed carton 42 at the end 32 of the mandrel means 22 to be stripped therefrom by the left-hand stationary stripping means 30 in the manner illustrated in FIGURES 9 and 10 so that the completed carton will fall off the end of the apparatus and be removed in any suitable manner. For example, the ejected completed carton 42 falling off the end 32 of the mandrel means 22 can fall into a moving conveyor means which will move the completed carton to the desired location for shipment, storage or use thereof, as desired.
When the mandrel means 22 has moved from the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 to the position illustrated in FIGURE 2 to completely remove the carton at the end 32 thereof, it can be seen that the other end 33 of the mandrel means 22 has now projected beyond the righthand stripping means 31 to receive a carton structure 42 in the manner previously described and as illustrated in FIGURE 11. Thereafter, the pressure plates 40 of the set 37 are moved inwardly in a manner hereinafter described to hold the glued areas of the carton on the end 33 of the mandrel means 22 together until the adhesive thereof sets whereby the pressure plates 40 are moved outwardly and the mandrel means 22 is advanced back to the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 so that the completed carton on the end 33 thereof will be stripped off the same by the stripper means 31 in the manner previously described for the stripper means 30.
Therefore, it can be seen that by reciprocating the mandrel means 22 back and forth between the positions illustrated in FIGURES l and 2, cartons can be alternately formed on the ends 32 and 33 thereof in a simple and effective manner that is substantially continuous as will be apparent hereinafter.
However, while the apparatus 20 of this invention has been previously described as alternately forming cartons on the ends 32,and 33 thereof, it is to be understood that the apparatus 20 of this invention can be utilized to only form cartons on one of the ends 32 or 33 thereof without utilizing the other end 32 or 33 as desired.
The fluid system for operating the apparatus 20 in the above manner is illustrated in FIGURE 12 and can utilize either a hydraulic fluid or a pneumatic fluid as desired.
In any event, a source of pressurized fluid is directed through a conduit means 43 to be passed through a suitable filter 44 and through a suitable pressure regulator 45 into branch conduits 46, 47 and 48.
The branch conduit 47 leads to a first three-way pilot valve 49 having a timer adjusting screw 50 for a purpose hereinafter described, the branch conduit 47 also leading to another three-way pilot valve 51 having an adjustable timer screw 52 for a purpose hereinafter described The branch conduit 46 has a manually operated valve 53 provided therein and a positioning valve 54 in advance of the pilot valve 49. Similarly, the branch conduit 48 has a manually operated valve 55 and a positioning valve 56 provided thereinin advance of the pilot valve 51.
The pilot valve 49 is adapted to interconnect the branch conduit 47 to the fluid operated actuators 36 of the set 35 in the manner illustrated in FIGURE 12. Similarly, the
pilot valve 51 is adapted to interconnect the branch conduit 47 with the fluid operated actuators 36 of the set 37 in the manner illustrated in FIGURE 12.
The electrical system for the apparatus 20 is illustrated schematically in FIGURE 13 and comprises a suitable transformer means 57 receiving alternating current from a suitable source whereby the various electrical devices of the apparatus 20 can be energized in a manner now to be described.
When the apparatus 20 is disposed in the position illustrated in FIGURE 1, the operator at the end 32 of the apparatus 20 assembles the carton structure 42 about the end 32 of the mandrel means 22 whereby the same is now ready to have the glued parts thereof held together by the pressure plates 40. At this time, the operator trips the handle 58 of the valve 53 to cause the fluid pressure from the source of the system illustrated in FIGURE 12 to pass to the pilot valve 49 as the positioning valve 54 is opened by the mandrel means 22 being disposed in the position illustrated in FIGURE 1. The flow through the conduit means 46 to the pilot valve 49 now causes the pilot valve 49 to interconnect the branch conduit 47 to the actuators 36 of the set 35 thereof in a manner now to be described.
First, the bottom actuator 36A of the set 35 is actuated because the side actuators 36B and top actuator 36C of the set 35 have speed control valves 59 in advance thereof to slow down the operation thereof in a particular sequence. Thus, the bottom pressure plate 40 of the set 35 is first moved upwardly from the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 to compress the bottom portion of the carton structure 42 against the bottom of the mandrel means 22. Thereafter, the opposed side actuators 36B are actuated to move the pressure plates 30 against the carton structure 42 and compress the same against the opposed sides of the mandrel means 22. Thereafter,the top actuator 36C of the set 35 is actuated to cause the pressure plate 40 thereof to move downwardly from the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 to hold the top side of the carton structure 42 against the top side of the mandrel means 22.
By having the pressure plates 40 operate in the sequence described above, the resulting carton 42 is assured of a square, tight configuration without voids in the glued surfaces thereof.
The actuators 40 are maintained in their in positions for a predetermined time interval depending upon the setting of the adjusting screw 50 whereby the adhesive sets up on the carton structure 42.
After the predetermined time interval, the pilot valve 40 terminates the flow of hydraulic fluid to the actuators 36 of the set 35 so that the pressure plates 40 thereof move outwardly to the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 by suitable spring action, the actuators 36 of the set 35 respectively having quick exhaust valves 60 operatively interconnected therewith to permit fast return of the pres sure plates 40 to their outward positions as illustrated in FIGURE 1.
When the top pressure plate 40 moves outwardly to the position illustrated in FIGURE 1, the same closes a switch 6]. that pulls on contractor 61A to interconnect the motor 29 across the leads L and L so that the motor 29 will rotate in the proper direction to move the mandrel means 22 from the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 to the position illustrated in FIGURE 2 to completely strip the completed carton 42 from the end 32 of the mandrel means 22 in the manner previously described by the stripping means 30. When the mandrel means 22 reaches the position illustrated in FIGURE 2, the mandrel means 22 not only opens the valve 56 illustrated in FIG- URE 12, but also opens a switch 62 that breaks the electrical connection to the motor 29 so that the motor 29 stops, the motor 29 being of the type that when there is no current to the motor, a brake is applied to the shaft thereof to terminate rotation thereof and the brake is i) turned off when current is supplied to the motor to permit the shaft thereof to rotate.
With the mandrel means 22 now in the position illustrated in FIGURE 2, the actuators 36 of the set 37 are adapted to be actuated when the operator operates the handle 63 of the valve means 55 because the pilot valve 51 interconnects the source conduit 47 to the actuators 36 of the set 37 thereof, the actuators 36 of the set 37 operating in the same sequence as the actuators 35 of the set 35 previously described to compress the sides of the carton structure 42 assembled to the end 33 of the mandrel means 22 against the mandrel means 22 for a predetermined length of time depending upon the setting of the adjusting screw 52 of the pilot valve 51.
Thereafter, when the pilot valve 51 terminates the supply of hydraulic fluid to the actuators 36 of the set 37 thereof, the pressure plates 4 move outwardly whereby the top pressure plate 4%) of the set 37 closes a switch 64 that pulls on contractor 64A to place the motor 29 across the leads L and L so that the motor 29 will operate in the proper direction to drive the mandrel means 22 back from the position illustrated in FIGURE 2 to the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 and cause the carton 4-2 formed on the end 33 thereof to be stripped therefrom by the stripping means 31 in the manner previously described.
Wh n the mandrel means 22 has moved the proper distance to the left as illustrated in FIGURE 1, the mandrel means 22 opens a switch 65 to terminate the operation of the motor 29 so that another carton 42 can be formed on the end 52 thereof in the above manner.
Thus, it can be seen that the fluid and electrical system of the apparatus of this invention are adapted to almost continuously reciprocate the mandrel means 22 back and forth between the positions illustrated in FIGURES 1 and 2 to substantially continuously form the cartons 42 in the manner previously described.
Should it be desired that only a single operator be provided for the apparatus 2% and that the same is to be standing at the end 32 of the apparatus 2%, the single operator closes a toggle switch 66 in FIGURE 13.
Thus, after a carton has been glued, folded and pressed on the end 32 of the mandrel means 22 when the mandrel means 22 is disposed in the position illustrated in FIG- URE 1, the upward movement of the top pressure plate 49 of the set closes the switch 61 which places the motor 29 across the leads L and L to move the mandrel means 22 from the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 to the position illustrated in FIGURE 2 and completely strip the completed carton 42 from the end 32 of the mandrel means 22.
When the mandrel 22 has moved to the position illustrated in FIGURE 2, the mandrel means 22 opens the switch 62 which simultaneously closes a switch 67 to place a timer 68 across the leads L and L the opening of the switch 62 stopping the operation of the motor 29.
When the timer 68 runs out, it pulls in contractor 64A to place the motor 29 across the leads L and L to cause the motor 29 to drive the mandrel means 22 back to the left to the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 whereby when the mandrel means 22 reaches the position illustrated in FIGURE 1, the mandrel means 22 opens the switch 65 to terminate the operation of the motor 22 Thus, it can be seen that the operator standing at the end 32 of the apparatus 20 can continuously form carton structures 42 thereon without requiring an operator to be disposed at the end 33 of mandrel means 22.
Therefore, it can be seen that this invention not only provides an improved apparatus for forming cartons in a unique and simple manner, but also this invention provides an improved method for making such cartons or the like.
While the form of the invention now preferred has been disclosed as required by the statutes, other forms may be used, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
6 What is claimed is: I 1. Apparatus for forming a carton or the like comprising frame means, mandrel means horizontally movable relative to said frame means from one position to. another position, pressure plate means for pressing a carton structure against said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said one position to complete said carfour sides of said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said one position to complete said carton in telescoped relation over one end of said mandrel means, and means for stripping said completed carton from said one end of said mandrel means when said mandrel means is moved from said one position to said other position.
4. Apparatus as set forth in claim 3 wherein said stripping means is carried by said frame means.
5. Apparatus for forming a carton or the like comprising frame means, mandrel means horizontally movable relative to said frame means from one position to another position, first pressure plate means for pressing a carton structure against said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said one position to complete said carton, first stripping means for stripping said completed carton from said mandrel means when said mandrel means is moved from said one position to said other position, second pressure plate means for pressing another carton structure against said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said other position to complete said other carton, and second stripping means for stripping said completed other carton from said mandrel means when said mandrel means is moved from said other position thereof back to said one' position thereof.
6. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said first and second pressure plate means are carried by said mandrel means.
7. Apparatus for forming a carton or the like comprising frame means, a substantially rectangular mandrel means movable relative to said frame means from one position to another position, a first set of four pressure plate means for pressing the four sides of a carton structure against four sides of said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said one position to complete said carton in telescoped relation over one end of said mandrel means, first stripping means for stripping said completed carton off said one end of said mandrel means when said mandrel means is moved from said one position to said other position, a second set of four pressure plate means for pressing the four sides of another carton structure against the four sides of said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said other position to complete said other carton in telescoped relation over the other end of said mandrel means, and second stripping means for stripping said other carton off said other end of said mandrel means when said mandrel means is moved from said other position thereof to said one position thereof.
8. Apparatus as set forth in claim 7 wherein said stripping means are carried by said frame means.
9. A method for forming a carton or the like comprising the steps of disposing a carton structure around a mandrel means, pressing said carton structure against said mandrel means with pressure plate means while said mandrel means is in one position thereof to complete said carton, and horizontally moving said mandrel means from said one position thereof to another position thereof to strip said completed carton from said mandrel means with stripping means.
10. A method as set forth in claim 9 and including the step of mounting said pressure plate means to said mandrel means.
11. A method for forming a carton or the like comprising the steps of telescoping a carton structure around one end of a substantially rectangular mandrel means, pressing the four sides of the carton structure against the four sides of said mandrel means with four pressure plate means while said mandrel means is in one position thereof to complete said carton, and moving said mandrel means from said one position thereof to another position thereof to strip the completed carton from said one end of said mandrel means with stripping means.
12. A method as set forth in claim 11 and including the step of mounting said stripping means to a frame means movably carrying said mandrel means.
13. A method as set forth in claim 11 and including the steps of moving said mandrel means in a substantially horizontal direction and operating said pressure plate means so that the bottom pressure plate means is first actuated, then the opposed side pressure plates are actuated and then the top pressure plate means is actuated to provide a uniform carton.
14. A method for forming a carton or the like comprising the steps of disposing a first carton structure around a mandrel means while the mandrel means is in one position thereof, and pressing said first carton structure against said mandrel means with first pressure plate means to complete said first carton, moving said mandrel means horizontally from said one position thereof to another position thereof to strip said first completed carton from said mandrel means with first stripping means, disposing a second carton structure around said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said other position thereof, pressing said second carton structure against said mandrel means with second pressure plate means to complete said second carton, and moving said mandrel means back from said other position thereof to said one position thereof to strip said second completed carton from said mandrel means with a second stripping means.
15. A method as set forth in claim 14 and including the step of mounting said first and second pressure plate means to said mandrel means.
16. A method for forming a carton or the like comprising the steps of telescoping a first carton structure over one end of a substantially rectangular mandrel means while said mandrel means is in one position thereof, pressing the four sides of the carton structure against the four sides of said mandrel means with a first set of four pressure plate means to complete the said first carton, moving said mandrel means from said one position thereof to another position thereof to strip the completed first carton olf the one end of said mandrel means with a first stripping means, disposing a second carton structure over the 'other end of said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said other position thereof, pressing the four sides of the second carton structure against the four sides of said mandrel means with a second set of four pressure plate means to complete said carton, and moving said mandrel means back from said other position to said one position thereof to strip said second completed carton from said mandrel means with a second stripping means.
17. A method as set forth in claim 16 and including the step of mounting said stripping means to a frame means movably carrying said mandrel means.
18. A method as set forth in claim 16 and including the steps of moving said mandrel means in a substantially horizontal direction and operating the pressure plate means of each set thereof so that the bottom plate means is first actuated, then the opposed side pressure plate means are actuated and the top pressure plate means is actuated to provide a uniform carton.
19. Apparatus for forming a carton or the like comprising frame means, a substantially rectangular mandrel means movable relative to said frame means from one position to another position, four pressure plate means for pressing the four sides of a carton structure against four sides of said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said one position to complete said carton in telescoped relation over one end of said mandrel means, means for stripping said completed carton from said one end of said mandrel means when said carton mandrel is moved from said one position to said other position wherein said mandrel means is moved in a substantially horizontal direction and a bottom pressure plate means of first actuated, then opposed side pressure plate means are actuated and then top pressure plate means is actuated to provide a uniform carton.
20. Apparatus for forming a carton or the like comprising frame means, a substantially rectangular mandrel means movable relative to said frame means from one position to another position, first set of four pressure plates means for pressing the four sides of a carton structure against four sides of said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said one position to complete said carton in telescoped relation over one end of said mandrel means, first stripping means for stripping said completed carton off said one end of said mandrel means when said mandrel means is moved from said one position to said other position, a second set of four pressure plate means for pressing the four sides of another side of another carton structure against the four sides of said mandrel means while said mandrel means is in said other position to complete said other carton in telescoped relation over the other end of said mandrel means, second stripping means for stripping said other carton off said other end of said mandrel means when said mandrel means is moved from said other position thereof to said one position thereof wherein said mandrel means is moved in a substantially horizontal direction and pressure plate means of each set operate in the sequence of a bottom plate means being first actuated, then opposed side plate means are actuated and then top pressure plate means is actuated to provide a uniform carton.
