1 Claim. (Cl. 81-101) The present invention relates to a pipe wrench.
One object of the present invention is to provide a pipe wrench so constructed as to have a holding plate, which holds a movable jaw which will not slip out of a longitudinal slot provided on the back of a stationary jaw member.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a pipe wrench so constructed as to have a holding plate, which holds a movable jaw wherein the rocking movement of the movable jaw is free within said longitudinal slot of the stationary jaw member.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a pipe wrench equipped with a sliding plate so constructed as to engage a movable jaw slidable in said longitudinal slot. A further object of the present invention is to provide a pipe wrench in which the opposing gripping teeth are made of a hardened metal alloy of a strength considerably greater than conventional steel.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a pipe wrench in which the gripping force of the wrench is significantly increased by having one or a plurality of longitudinal grooves provided additionally on the conventional gripping teeth in a lateral direction with definite spacings.
Another object of the present invention is to supply a pipe wrench in which the opposing gripping teeth are formed with numerous projections of pyramid-like shape, whereby the gripping force of the wrench against the surface of a pipe is increased, completely preventing the gripping teeth from slipping on the surface of pipe.
In consideration of the above objects and other objects that may be described hereinafter, the arrangement of the parts of the pipe wrench according to the present invention will be described in the following specification and in the accompanying claim hereof.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment according to the present invention:
FIG. 1 is the front view of the pipe wrench according to the present invention, partly sectioned;
FIG. 2, the bottom plan view thereof;
:FIG. 3, a longitudinal section through line III-III of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4, a perspective view of the holding plate of the pipe wrench according to the present invention, and
FIGS. 5 and 6 are front views, respectively, of the gripping teeth of different types.
Referring now in detail to the present invent-ion with reference to the accompanying drawings, an idling slot 6 is provided in the central wall of a U shaped holding plate 5 displaceably fitted in the threaded portion 4 of the movable jaw 3, which is inserted through a long-itudinal slot 2 provided on the back of the stationary 3,188,894- Patented June 15, 1965 jaw member 1. The holding plate 5 is held to the side Wall of the longitudinal slot 2 by a projection 8 of a screw 7 secured to the side wall of the stationary jaw member 1 and extending through the .slot 6 of the holding plate. The jaw portion 9 of the stationary jaw member 1 has a toothed plate or grasping member 12 made of a hardened metal alloy steel and rigidly fitted to a base 11 in a frame 10 with 3 or 4 side edges. The gripping teeth of the toothed plate 12 is constituted of numerous projections 13 of pyramid-like shape, as shown in FIG. 5 or with divided edges 15 formed by a plurality of parallel vertical grooves 14 cut on a plate provided with numerous parallel teeth, as shown in FIG. 6.
The movable jaw 3 also has a toothed plate 16 also of hardened metal alloy.
In the drawings, numerals 17, 17 indicate springs biasing the upper and lower walls of said holding plate 5 and which are received in holes 18, 18' bored angularly in front and rear in the upper and lower portions adjacent the longitudinal slot 2. Numeral 19 indicates a screw for adjusting the tension of said spring 17.
Describing the operation of the pipe wrench according to the present invention the movable jaw 3, inserted through the longitudinal slot 2 bored in the stationary jaw member 1, has the U-shaped holding plate 5 pivotally held on a projection 8 of the screw 7 projecting into said idling slot 6 of suitable shape in the central wall thereof, the holding plate 5 being restricted from lateral movement by said projection 8 and thereby prevented from falling out, and also the holding plate having light play between the idling hole 6 and the projection 8 of the screw 7 as its pivot, thus enabling it to grip or release the movable jaw member 3 by the front end or the rear end thereof.
According to the present invention, the toothed plate 12 made of a hardened metal alloy is rigidly fitted to the base 11 in a frame with three or four side edges in the jaw 9 of the stationary jaw 1. The affixing of the toothed plate can be performed in a simple manner. The toothed plate 1 2, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, is provided with numerous projections 13 of pyramid-like shape, so-called diamond cuts, or divided edges 15 made by having one .or a plurality of vertical grooves cut on horizontal edges in parallel, whereby the grip of the teeth on the pipe becomes firm, and thereby the wrench is prevented from horizontal slipping and in addition, the teeth being made of a hardened metal alloy steel, the pipe Wrench according to the present invention is free from the abrasion of the teeth and can be used permanently without affecting its Working condition.
According to the present invention, the pipe wrench being constructed as described above, the gripping and turning of pipe can be performed smoothly, and in addition the gripping teeth being made of a hardened metal alloy on both jaws of the wrench, the durability thereof and its commercial value are greatly increased.
What is claimed:
A pipe wrench comprising a stationary jaw member having a guide channel defined by upper, lower and side walls and provided with bores extending into said stationary jaw through said upper and lower walls, .a guide screw secured to one of said side walls and extending inwardly of said channel, a holding plate in said channel, said holding plate being formed with in-bent flanges and'an idling slot said-screwhe ing loosely received in P References Cited by'the Examiner d dl n ot, a mova e jaw having a t r de sha k UNITED STATES PATENTS" displaceable in said holding plate between said inben-t 838 552 12/06 L d a 1 portions, 21 pair of spiral springs received in each of said 1 70112O 2/29 5; bores respectively, for biasing the respective flanges of 5 8/50 i g 81-186 said holding plate, an adjusting screw in one of said V 2,680,396 6/54 Wright 81-101 bores for ad usting the tension of one of said springs 2760 ,8/56 St Pierre and a pair of toothed grasping members secured to each of said jaws respectively for engaging the outer surface WILLIAM F prlmary Exammerof a pipe.
